I would love to see "First on the Moon," from last year, it looks adorable.

My favorite Russian sci-fi film is "Kin Dza-Dza", but it has never been subtitled :(

I lived in the crackhouse for about 3 hours. Which is how long I spent cleaning the place before I opened a closet to find a veritable MOUNTAIN of mouseshit. I got my damage deposit back (and uncashed rent cheques), and 24 hours later found a pretty nice (one million times nicer than the first place) bungalow for less money near trout lake.
how's school + politicks?

I've seen the silent 'Aelita' (albeit on TV, which is never good for silents), and it's an interesting curiosity, though most of the action is on earth.

Curious about 'Planet of Storms', supposedly the Soviet 'Forbidden Planet' and out on DVD

That looks great. They have a few in the New Tretyakov but many of the surviving ones are in private collections so it's rare to see many in the same place. I really want that Intourist book in the gallery shop too.

one year passes...

Huh I did not know that Kin-Dza-Dza recently had an animated remake, co-directed by the original director (or perhaps his co-credit is mere directorial diplomacy, I dunno)

it has not too positive reviews, but anyone seen it? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2659374/

(on one of my periodic googles because I got the "mama, mama" song from KDD stuck in my head but couldn't remember what the film was called - this happens every few months, with either the song or something to do with matchsticks reminding me of it)

I recommended Kin Dza-Dza (now on youtube with subs) to Fizzles then rewatched it myself. Hmm. Not rescinding my recommendation but I would add some caveats. It's slow - could do with 30 or 40 minutes trimmed - and pretty niche. My wife saw one shot of a guy with a string vest and leather waistcoat with strange metal accessories and asked me if i was watching gay porn now. But it's strangely endearing, and explores a unique intersection of Mad Max, Kafka, and Pingu.

Oh and the ending is *chef's kiss*, I love it.

Gonna see what other Russian films are worth tracking down.
