"How's THAT for a topper! Uh-huh-huh-huh-huh!"

Between him and Paul Lynde, my seventies childhood had some warped role models.

He used to be on game shows and talk shows all the time in the Seventies. As was Paul Lynde. There just aren't any larger that life blabbermouth queens with that kind of media profile around these days, what a shame. Like, what happened to Richard Simmons? And Rip Taylor? Where have all the twisted fag role models gone? Sigh. We're stuck with Louie Anderson and Dave Grohl-lookalike/fashion commentator Stephen Kajagoogoo and that horrible queen with the chunky glasses from that stupid Rate-a-Date show. Hey, the past was better!

Search: his repartee with Brett Sommers on Match Game. And Cannonball Run II. But he really peaked with his performance as Hoo Doo on H.R. Puff n Stuff and Lidsville. He seems to mainly do voiceovers these days. I wish some auteur would re-discover him, Travolta-style.

RRRRRIP TAYLOR!

And the most overlooked twisted fag cartoon role model: Fred, the fey lion sidekick of Superchicken

Charles Nelson Reilly recently directed a play here in San Francisco. This was in the last 6 months.

I've related this one here before, but let me add a story my father told me. He was at Sardi's with clients in the mid-70's, and Charles Nelson comes up to my dad, falls to the floor, grabs his leg and moans "oh Jimmie... Jimmie!" (my father's name is James). He also used to call the house during the same period and do funny voices to amuse my mother. Sardi's was also the scene of the famous Bea Arthur incident (a drunk Ms. Arthur staggers up to my dad and says "You! It's men like you who've spoiled my life!!"). Sardi's must have been quite the scene in the 70's. Or my dad was quite a guy, not sure which.

Sean, I am so jealous of your dad. Was he a talent agent or entertainment lawyer?

Arthur, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, he was an advertising exec. He was also very handsome.

Sean, Friday, 8 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aha. It's men like him who've spoiled my life! ;-)

Search: His guest appearance on the singlemost greatest episode of the X-Files ("Jose Chung's In Outer Space") About the closest that show ever got to having Robert Anton Wilson writing for them.

he played the same guy on an episode of millenium that made fun of deepak chopra and scientology.

He was also the dithering comic foil in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Artie, I'm disappointed you left that one out!
