Grandstanding, clever judo throw, or irrelevant?

Django Blowhardt (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

Irrelevant. Now I'm going to read it.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

The correct answer is "Yes".

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. I like it.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

smug as fuck

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's kind of disingenuous. I mean, Cliton signed the the Defense of Marriage Act into law, and if he thinks that Democrats don't "tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich" then he should come check out Chicago.

Maybe I'm cynical, but while I think democrats are more likely to speak positively of a lot of the things Michael Moore describes, I don't have much faith that they will actually effectuate that many changes to US law and policy.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

Please don't respond to this as if it should be taken seriously.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Dems also happily "sent America's sons and daughters off to die for a mistake and a lie" etc etc

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

i wish the sock puppets on both sides would go away

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

I WISH THEM ALL INTO THE CORNFIELD

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

I kind of like it because I tend to frame the left-right divide the same way: "I'm a Democrat because I'll fight harder for your rights than you'll fight for mine, you worthless 200-pound skin-bag full of smegma, you."

I like the sentiment even if I disagree with some of the content.

Why not? It's true!

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't Moore use to be funny at some point? Or at least attempt to be?

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

It's hard to be funny when people keep calling you a fat liar when you attempt to point out who the fat liars are.

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

Loved Roger and Me, but he was always smug.

I wouldn't call him a liar, but he does play fast and loose.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

I, and the millions of others who are now in charge with our Democratic Congress lol

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

I find it impossible to read anything by Moore without hearing his nasaly voice and heavy breathing in my head. It's distracting.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

That's quite shallow of you!

the Adversary (but, still, a friend of yours) (Uri Frendimein), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

5. When we make America the last Western democracy to have universal health coverage,

Is a Democratic Congress really going to do this in the next four years? I mean, are they even pretending to be interested in wanting to do this?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

of course not.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

Right after Bush privatizes Social Security.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

the whole thing is very disingenuous, a laundry list of wishful thinking dressed up as condescending triumphalism.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

(er, "wishful thoughts" there)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

This sort of makes me ill.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

a laundry list of wishful thinking dressed up as condescending triumphalism.

I completely agree with this, but it's a nice dream.

Dear Conservatives and Republicans,

I, and my fellow signatories, hereby make these promises to you:

1. Just as the the right never really gave you the things you wanted, we won't really take that much of it away

-- (688), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

Dear Conservatives and Republicans,

I, and my fellow signatories, hereby make these promises to you:

2. We won't berate you, or shout at you, like you berate and shout at us. Oh no, we will patronize you, and talk down to you, just like they warned you we would

-- (688), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

1. Just as the the right never really gave you the things you wanted, we won't really take that much of it away

I suspect you're right about the second half but, uh, what more could Bush have done to give conservatives what they wanted?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

killed a bunch of homos

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:52 (nineteen years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

granted citizenship to stem cells

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

bah x-post!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

Dear Liberals and Democrats,

1. We will reduce taxes on the top 1% so that you too can benefit from trickle-down economics.

2. We will eliminate the estate tax so that you too can dream of one day leaving several million dollars to your children, and build your own dynasty for generations to come.

3. We will cut spending so that you aren't forced to give your money to programs like Head Start or to send your own children to school. When they are required to go to school, they may be led in prayer by their teacher, just like our own children.

Kinda hard to write from the other side.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

4. We will protect you from terrorists, even though most of the time you act like one and don't seem to care who your actions endanger.

(c'mon this is EASY!)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

5. We will hold all life sacred, even yours and those of your unborn children, and will act with love and kindness to include everyone in a "culture of life".

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

6. We will sanctify marriage via an amendment to the constitution, so that you will be free to marry a member of the opposite sex and observe our traditions.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

what more could Bush have done to give conservatives what they wanted?

less abortion, less evolution taught in schools, more death penalties, less bad language on tv, less sex on tv, less pornography, less separation of church and state

-- (688), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, if abortion and porn are to things that disgust you, has bush really done that much for you?

-- (688), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

or if "small government" disgusts you, what has bush done for you? (hi don!)

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

"or if "small government" disgusts you, what has bush done for you?"

uh, an assload of gov't expansion?

Wow, all that stuff is so radical. Outrageous. Liberal and socially conscious and patriotic and environmental and with gender equity to boot.

No wonder conservatives have to make fun of it. They don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to actual responses.

Color me signed.

Hey Jude (Hey Jude), Thursday, 16 November 2006 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

lol @ fatty

why don't moore & limbaugh fucking consume each other and die

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 16 November 2006 05:35 (nineteen years ago)

the lazy equation of moore and limbaugh isn't fair to either of them. but they're both fat white guys so i guess they must be the same.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 16 November 2006 06:08 (nineteen years ago)

right, i clearly was equating them?
actually, they're both obnoxious and do their "sides" no favors by being easily caricatured idiots (plus the fatty thing)

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 16 November 2006 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

rush limbaugh has done his side a lot of favors. he's been pretty important to the conservative apparatus over the last 15 years or so. his recent antics might have hurt jim talent a little, it's hard to say, and he certainly seems emblematic of the movement's decline. but the movement needed him to get where it got. not so sure about moore, because he's not so much a part of the party machinery. i also don't think moore's an idiot, he's a populist activist who sometimes lets his bluster get the better of him. but, you know, dude stood up on international tv in march '03 and called the motives for the iraq war a fiction. that doesn't exactly look idiotic from the current vantage.

anyway, they're just very different types of people, not just in ideology but in what they do and how they do it. i've just gotten tired of hearing the compariso.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 16 November 2006 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

(that last word needs an n.)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 16 November 2006 06:48 (nineteen years ago)

fair enough

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 16 November 2006 06:56 (nineteen years ago)

"but, you know, dude stood up on international tv in march '03 and called the motives for the iraq war a fiction"

he took a lot of shit for this - the audience booed him! - but even if he'd never actually made a couple films I found mildly entertaining (Roger and Me, Bowling for Columbine) this one act alone wins him a pass for me. He's done some pretty buffoonish things (this memo for starters) but I was really glad/proud when he did this little bit of grandstanding. Even if he did muff the delivery.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 November 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

P.S. Please feel free to pass this on.

MICHAEL MOORE GRANTS INTERNET PERMISSION TO FORWARD...DEVELOPING...

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 16 November 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

12. We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich. We will go after any elected leader who puts him or herself ahead of the people. And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side FIRST. If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it. Simply because we are in power does not give us the right to turn our heads the other way when our party goes astray. Please perform this important duty as the loyal opposition.

OK, brah. How about hosting this video on your website, for starters. And then maybe get Byrd off of Appropriations. And then how about a film on earmarking, just to keep the heat on folks who are in charge. And before Alcee Hastings even gets nominated, you could...

don weiner (don weiner), Thursday, 16 November 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder if any "conservative" has even looked at this pledge, or even heard of it.
