If I were forced to choose the continued existance of just one or the other, I would have to vote in favor of the elephant - not because of any cuteness I see in them, but because the literature inspired by the elephant seal has been quite slender, whereas elephants bulk far larger in the world's imagination and we'd be all that much poorer for their disappearance.

Did anyone read the picture book where some town was being bombed and they had to euthanize all the animals at the zoo? The elephants' skin was too thick and the zookeepers kept breaking the needles and the elephants kept crying....I think that was the most depressing book I ever read.

ha - knew that times story would pop up eventually! did anyone ever read the issue of murder can be fun dealing w/ zoo deaths? elephants kill at will, they got the bloodlust.
