Pride FC is generally better (deeper talent pool), but yeah, I download both when I remember.

Yeah, I'm fairly ashamed to admit that I still have a bizarre desire to watch these guys beat the crap out of each other. To be honest though, I really think things have gone too far with the 'ground and pound' method of finishing. I've wrestled and put the gloves on with friends for many years, but I can't imagine battering someone I consider a friend the way some of these guys do.

The introduction of rounds and ref-breakups when things are taking too long on the ground (as far as the audience is concerned) are to blame for this trend, I think. The submission specialists are no longer given enough time to finish things nicely, so now everyone wants to ensure a victory by pounding each other rather, than taking the time and energy expense to set up proper (and relatively safe) submissions.

Having said all that, I really hope Georges St. Pierre hands Matt Hughes his ass this coming Saturday night. Hughes is such an asshole, and I'm tired of his Christian righteous indignation. Does he really believe "his lord and saviour" would approve of the fucking UFC?? All of these clowns who pray and thank Jesus for allowing them to pound the piss out their opponents are morons, and I say this even though I know Hughes is quite intelligent... that just makes it all the more moronic in my opinion.

Heh, that stuff is fake. It's not real like pro wrestling!

There are times when these guys are really pounding each other that i wish you were correct Estie.

I totally agree with shorty in terms of stopping the g'n'p earlier. And in fact, longer rounds and less ref interference with the submission game is another thing that makes Pride a better MMA promotion.

see, i always like the guys who like to box, just better entertainment. the hardcore grapplers are like two pissheads rowing outside a chipper on a friday night.

yeah, i'd be lying if i said i didnt dig on the savagery though. how long can these guys keep fighting in this though? most of the fighters who have been in it long term have wayward eyes and seem incredibly fucked up.

ken shamrock getting busted up twice was a great laugh.

never seen Pride. they show UFC on the Bravo channel here

Michael B (Michael B), Friday, 17 November 2006 05:04 (nineteen years ago)

If I *have* to watch this fake rubbish, I rather watch Pride than UFC.

wordy rappaport (EstieButtez1), Friday, 17 November 2006 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

MMA is fantastic in pretty much all forms. PRIDE, K1/HERO'S, UFC, and the weird stuff like ZST (who play progressive trance during the bouts and had tag team fights) and DEEP (who used a bunch of Mexican wrestlers in legit fights).

Beyond Saturn (Gods_on_Safari), Friday, 17 November 2006 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

If you wanna see an amazing Pride FC bout, try to bittorrent the Josh Barnett vs. Antonio "Minotauro" Noguiera match from the recent grand prix tourney. One of the best fights I've ever seen, with two top grapplers who make the ground game absolutely thrilling.

That's exactly why things have turned out as they have though, right? The orginal concept of the UFC wasn't about the audience, it was about how things would actually work themselves out when you let two guys go at it without any interference. There are *many* grapplers who would not have lost matches if the ref hadn't stopped them from gaining proper position in order to submit their opponents.

Of course, it was when the rules started catering to the audience that it became a successful business though. That and the ability to be sanctioned anywhere to fight. Ironic that the newer rules (rounds and ref stand-ups) are seen as safer! There was far less bloodshed in the early days.

Heh heh heh, I guess Jesus didn't answer Matt Hughes prayers in his fight against St. Pierre!

I don't get the appeal. (I guess I do 'get' the appeal - blood, mayhem, Vern Schillinger lookalikes, etc.)

With boxing, there's science and poetry, angles and tactics and even (occasionally) beauty. MMA is just dark and sad, pro wrestling if it were real.

The same can be said for grappling though Milo. A perfectly executed judo or aikido throw is one of the most beautiful examples of poetry in motion in all combative sports or martial arts. It's just that with the way the UFC has evolved you rarely get to see any of the science or beauty anymore.

As for the appeal, for me it was originally because I had been a judoka and wrestler for most of my life and all of the boxers and karate guys I knew were convinced that their styles were superior to "mere sports" like judo (although none of them wanted to try mixed sparring). The original UFC completely changed this attitude, and you wouldn't have believed the influx of students from striking MAs who suddenly joined our dojo.

But I'm with ya now. Can't stand the amount of blood and disregard these guys seem to have for each other's safety.

I like MMA tho I am not a hardcore enthusiast or anything. The "Pride has more talent than UFC" canard, and the debate as a whole, is really tired and sordid. They both have great fights and great fighters. If there is still a gap between the two then it is certainly wayyy smaller than it was, say, 5 years ago.

"With boxing, there's science and poetry, angles and tactics and even (occasionally) beauty. MMA is just dark and sad, pro wrestling if it were real."

You appear to be a douchebag! just fyi lol. You've clearly never seen one of Sakuraba's classic matches if you believe there is no science or poetry in the sport.

also, I hate to come off as an apologist or whatever because I really like boxing just as much as MMA, but ppl make it sound so much more brutal and vulgar (the latter perhaps being true) when boxing is so much more dangerous. MMA guys just are not subjected to the same kind of pounding that your average boxer is, especially when you factor in the bigger gloves which allows guys to wail away on each other for nearly 40 minutes. Concussions in general aren't taken seriously enough in sports, but the prevalence of brain damage and deaths in boxing as opposed to MMA really needs to be stressed.

here is a picture of fedor emilianenko with a baby strapped to his chest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, I like UFC just fine, but lets not kid ourselves. Their top talent has been ducking Pride's top talent, and frankly, they aren't wrong to do so. Emilianenko would make very short work of them.

ilx ate my post :( well no fair bringing Fedor into it, of course he would kill anyone in the UFC. that's what he does! besides, along with Fedor, Ruo, Henderson, Nakamura etc. you get a ton of COMPLETE BUMS to pad shit out. I can go along with saying that PRIDE'S talent pool is deeper, but the gap just ain't that big imo. matt hughes is/was the best middleweight in the world, at least until last saturday (lol). also to be honest I'm often more entertained by UFC than the regular PRIDE events (bushido is another thing though, and shooto owns all of them).

SCOTTIE PIPPEN'S WEDDING (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 23 November 2006 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

My dislike of Matt Hughes as a person notwithstanding, I certainly agree that he is one of the best middleweights in the world. However, I would have to give the top spot, at least as far as technique is invovled, to BJ Penn. Without even considering Penn's first victory over Hughes, Penn was dominating him in the second match as well, then he gassed out. If Penn decided to get himself into proper shape to fight a machine like Hughes, I truly think last Saturday's match would have been between Penn and St. Pierre.

don't know much about MMA, but just watched the St.Pierre/Hughes fight from last saturday... wow, that's the kind of emotion that vince mcmahon has given up on trying to create.

Fuckin Jon Jones! Fuckin' Lyoto Machida!

And Kim should've won - I had him 29-27 (10-8 in the first round). Great grappling matchup though.

Best thing about this card - lots of guys who use different techs than the usual, but made them work.

Dear Tacos, how are you? I am fine. The weather is nice. I miss yo (Oilyrags), Thursday, 5 February 2009 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

Supernerd that I am, though, I kind of wish Jon Jones' ring nick was "The Martian Manhunter"
