:(

Not even my Dad had a bad word to say about him.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 17 November 2006 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

I was wondering what yr dad would say about him just now.

I was just checking out pictures of him and he was absolutely massive throughout his career (relatively anyway) - yet everyone who talks about having seen him says he had the most delicate and intuitive of touches.

I particularly like:
Puskas was an odd-looking footballer. He was short, stocky, barrel-chested and overweight, could not head the ball and could use only his left foot

But what a left foot

You two are up early.

I knew he hadn't been well, but, still, it's sad to lose one of the greats. I've heard and read many things about him, all of them good. Also, for that 7-3 Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt game at Hampden that everyone always mentions when talking of classic matches, he's gotta be a legend himself (though that would make light of the rest of his career, it's the game that I think of when either he or DiStefano are mentioned)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 17 November 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

my dad claims to have been at that hampden match, he always went on and on about how it was the greatest match ever, puskas was a genius etc etc when i was a kid.

rip.

zappi (joni), Friday, 17 November 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

My Dad puts him right up there with Pele, Eusebio and Di Stefano. A record of a goal a game for almost 900 games(!) speaks for itself.

It's a shame such an amazing Hungary team failed to capture the world cup.

RIP

Full scale RIP, one of the greatest sportsmen ever.

dommy p is alright WHICH IS A LOT MORE THAN I CAN SAY ABOUT A LOT OF PEOPLE (Dom, Friday, 17 November 2006 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

That's basically a variation on the famous English opinion/recieved wisdom re: Puskas in the 50s. RIP

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Friday, 17 November 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, my Dad's #1, no doubt. (My Dad has this gift for belittling every "great" who's ever played the game - saw Pele kicked to bits at Goodison in '66, "Duncan Edwards never had a good game against us", Stanley Matthews couldn't be bothered if the pitch was hard, etc, etc. Puskas was exempt from this - his eyes would light up if you mentioned the Magnificent Magyars).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 17 November 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

(Actually, Puskas and Brian Labone in the same year... I must give the old fella a ring tonight).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 17 November 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

I have a poster of him, and months ago edited the Hungary 1954 WC squad into PES5. I am sad. Probably my favourite legendary footballer, alongside Garrincha.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 November 2006 12:30 (nineteen years ago)

I tried to get Amazon to get me this back in the summer, but they failed - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Puskas-Life-Times-Footballing-Legend/dp/1861051565/sr=1-1/qid=1163766699/ref=sr_1_1/026-5861891-8173244?ie=UTF8&s=books

£107 from the States. Jesus. Hopefully it'll get a reprint now.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 November 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

are you sure it's not of Lev Yashin?

i have been singing "1966 and all that" to myself all morning...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 17 November 2006 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

I could watch that drag back against Billy Wright til the cows come home. Hard to fathom just the impact that game had at the time.

How he never won the World Cup is still one of the great football mysteries, but the rest is plenty good enough. 83 goals in 84 games at international level is just stupid.

RIP, Major.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 18 November 2006 01:43 (nineteen years ago)

Adding to the RIPs. Hell, even an ignorant American like myself knows who Puskas is. An amazing legacy.
