Interesting threads degenerating into mindless image spam: dud or really dud

It sucks when this happens, and I have no idea why people bother. I almost always just stop reading a thread once this happens.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

Cue image flood.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 02:30 (nineteen years ago)

nah.

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

"interesting"

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

For some threads I assumed it was a derail tactic, somewhat like the old method used on Usenet where people would just start posting recipes and ignoring trolls and spamflooders.

But way more annoying, I'm with you there - even with images off, I just give up on the thread.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 02:32 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I think the worst thing one can do to an otherwise good thread (and many of us have done this at least once) is to just post a jokey gif as an excuse for nothing to add.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

I generally agree with Andrew. I'd say even outrageously obnoxious threads degenerating into mindless spam = dud. If it becomess really terrible, lock or delete, and only with good reason.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 02:37 (nineteen years ago)

One jokey gif with context in a thread here or there is fine by me.

Fourty five in a row for no fucking reason? GAH STOP.

Or how about: if it becomes really terrible, stop posting to it and let it drift out of New Answers entirely.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 02:41 (nineteen years ago)

Why don't you people stop beating around the bush and retitle this thread "Scott Seward, how your shenanigans vex us so!"

Image-spamming to stop obnoxious threads is a dangerous tool and must be used wisely. WIth great power comes great responsibility.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

i find it strange, the desire not so much to de-participate in a thread, but to stop others from doing so also. the idea that you decide a thread is no longer valid, and you shall make this decision for everyone. in that way, it is a blunt form of moderation (and is not moderation, in its own way, also an expression of exasperation?)

-- (688), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 06:00 (nineteen years ago)

(dud obviously, because it signifies the inability of words - which is sometimes the case)

classic. the image spams don't (usually) hit until the thread degenerates into several posters giving up and expressing "fuck this thread" sentiments, or in response to a particular user being a total douche and trying to take out personal issues with others.

the rule of thumb is something like: when images of bags of cat food improve the thread it's likely a good time to start posting them.

I thank Andrew for bringing this issue to light. Gareth also summed up it's dudness perfectly.

It did used to be a lot of fun on Calum '04 threads tho.

2 american 4 u (blueski), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

but then they were already mindless so nothing to degenerate there.

2 american 4 u (blueski), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

If we're talking about the Michael Richards here,I thought it a pity that got imagewhacked as it's an ongoing story on which I think people still might have something to say.

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

I think I once asked Jon to stop spamming a calum thread so that I could try to argue/reason with calum.

In other words, I'm a twat.

ONIMO feels teh NOIZE (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

I won't personally (someone else might) but I suggest that thread be locked and if you do have a particularly salient point to make about the issue perhaps revive an older general thread about racism instead (rather than starting a new one which is likely to get bogged down with people moaning)?

2 american 4 u (blueski), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:13 (nineteen years ago)

I don't see any reason for that thread to be locked, sorry. Especially as it's an ongoing story.

Also wtf Steve - revive an old thread so that can get bogged down as well? What's wrong with the thread that's already there?

(Okay there are many things wrong with the thread that's already there but hey...)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

Fair point-the story has gone far beyond 'Richards is a racist' and when I see people (not here) suggesting a boycott of Seinfeld clearly there are other things to discuss (not here though).

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

Also wtf Steve - revive an old thread so that can get bogged down as well? What's wrong with the thread that's already there?

it is v long and full of crap. i think it's run out of steam anyway.

older threads tend to be more...respected?

2 american 4 u (blueski), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I've suddenly remembered why moderating heavy img spam is such an arse... I'm leaving it there.

Why does anyone in their right mind have images switched on in this day and age anyway? There's probably an argument for making 'images off' the default setting on nu-ILX.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:21 (nineteen years ago)

You want to lock a thread because it's not going the way you want it to go? Sorry, I think that's plain wrong. Why not put yr image settings (?) off and continue reading the thread? Did I think it was wrong what Scott was doing? Yes, but *shrug* maybe he did have a point and wanted to make people lighten up? I'm not sure.

I don't agree with Gareth: images can sometimes say more than words.

benrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly the only way forward is to lock all threads about racism ever and redirect people to 'Racism - Classic or Dud?' After all, we've done this all before, haven't we. God, if people would only just use the search function...

if you want to see images you would just turn that option on in your settings

v simple

2 american 4 u (blueski), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 16:01 (nineteen years ago)

given that i was one of the latecomers to the richards party who was probably responsible for keeping it going well past chucking-out time, can i just say i didn't give a flying fuck about the images and, in fact, they rather improved things? as onimo said at the time: worth it just for the comedy mobsters.

i'd rather a thread descended into daftness and eventually fell off new answers than got locked, prompting a multiplicity of angry/spoof/irritating threads in its place and preventing it ever being revived if something actually happens (which it almost certainly will) to merit that.
