I find them incredibly mawkish myself.

Quite often I feel like responding with Joe Orton's observation that "it wasn't as if the alternative was immortality" - but that would be a bit of an insensitive thing to do, obviously.

I'm often surprised by the hyperbolic reactions on these threads. "Oh no!" "DAMN!"

Especially when it's an 85 year old person who led a long and accomplished life.
