benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 4 January 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

7. The polar bear swimming in Planet Earth

I could fill this thread with things off Planet Earth - great white sharks pwning ickle seal, ducks jumping out of trees, mental French bloke steering balloons into baobab trees, anything at all involving penguins (see also Nigel Marven's Penguin Week), that weirdy bird that puffed up to look like it was a cartoon face on legs, etc.

But the tracking shot back up to show the bear swimming through miles of ocean through tons of cracked ice was awesome, yes.

11. The folk (one black guy, one blondey Essex girl) who had the £250k on their table in Deal or No Deal. He went to the wire, had £250k or £20k, offered £103k, knocked it back, went home with £20k. She had dealt at about £20k (on the advice of the boyfriend) but played on to discover she'd have been left with £100k or £250k and an offer in the region of £170k. You have never seen two people more gutted at "only" being given £20k for doing fuck all. Especially the girl.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 4 January 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

haha re penguins, 'tv burp' reedited it, or really just added bleeps, so that it sounded like marven was swearing at "***king penguins" the whole time.

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 4 January 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

11 was hilarious mainly due to her grating Essex girl accent and mannerisms.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 4 January 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

oh, definitely, threatening to be sick, crying, looking like she was about to kill the boyfriend. Fuck's sake, woman, you just got given £20k.

19. spoiral's rap for ashleyne on 'big brother'

benrique (Enrique), Thursday, 4 January 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Were there any unexpectedly shocking TV moments like there used to be on shows like Cheaters (when the host of the show got stabbed), or Stevo smashing Adam Carolla's table, or Kanye saying "George Bush doesn't care about black people".. because most of the "best" TV events I'm hearing about from 2006 sound very boring.

chap (chap), Saturday, 6 January 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

There's something I was discussing recently with aldo cowpat that we agreed was the worst thing we'd ever seen on telly, like "oh god, make it stop NOW" sort of excruciating but, as with most conversations had under the influence of alcohol, neither of us could remember what it was the next day. I was tempted to start this thread to find out. I'm kind of thinking it might have been Lauren Booth or George Galloway, but I'm sure it was something worse.

Keep piling on the excruciation, folks, cheers.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 6 January 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

Oh fuck, I remember discussing this but can't remember what it was. NEIL HAD NEVER SEEN IT if that helps.

dar1a g (daria g), Saturday, 6 January 2007 07:36 (eighteen years ago)

From the world of commercials:

Geico's two new advertising campaigns, which feature either cavemen or celebrities. Personal favorites: Royskopp's "Everywhere I Go" plays during a scene where the caveman passes a "So easy, a caveman can use it" poster while on an airport moving walkway; Burt Bacharach singing things such as, "Lizard that licks its eyeballs."

Those surprise accident commercials for VW.

Back to non-commercials:

House gets shot. Phrase, "anti-semantic bastard", enters the global consciousness.

"The Book Of Daniel" raises the ire of the usual Christian fundamentalist suspects before quickly fading away.

Monday Night Football no longer a part of the ABC schedule. Transfers over to ESPN. NBC rejoices as it debuts its own Sunday night football program.

News coverage of the first West Virginia mining disaster. Cruelly, hopes are falsely risen when it is thought that all but one would be coming out alive. The reverse actually becomes the case.

Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff temporarily become the first co-anchoring duo in decades before Woodruff is injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq and the two are replaced by Charles Gibson.

Bob Barker finally retires.

The overexposure of Rachael Ray kicks into high gear, "thanks" to Oprah.

"Deal Or No Deal" renders Howie Mandel relevant again.

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Saturday, 6 January 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, back to commercials temporarily: "Head On, apply directly to the forehead. Head On, apply directly to the forehead. Head On, apply directly to the forehead."

Phoenix Dancing (krushsister), Saturday, 6 January 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

Er, Dee, those are largely events rather than moments, if you get me.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 6 January 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

You semantic bastard. ;)

Besides, the numbering system has long since been forgotten. If someone wants to skip over that list, they can, easily.
