ugh

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

what an asshole.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

Don't worry, the art world doesn't take anyone who makes most of their money from limited edition t-shirts very seriously.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

haha yeah david choe can barely even sell comic books dude

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

didn't we do the whole graf-as-rebellious/revolutionary-statement thing like 25 years ago?

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of which, i'm sorry to say that i'm starting to get nauseous about Banksy.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Thursday, 4 January 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

"Starting," he says...

At least Choad can draw.

f. scott baio (nate_patrin), Thursday, 4 January 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

makin shit ugly; feelin important

PappaWheelie MMCMXL (PappaWheelie 2), Friday, 5 January 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

I'm assuming his "lookit me steal shit" schtick is strickly performance-art, since anyone who gussies up Scions and Chucks like that can't be starving too bad.

f. scott baio (nate_patrin), Friday, 5 January 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

Jack Black likes it = not anything i'm gonna dig

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 January 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

cough

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Friday, 5 January 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

Hahaha, born in LA moved to San Jose. It's reassuring to know I took the exact opposite life journey from this fucker. Who the hell would move TO San Jose from LA?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 5 January 2007 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

He's like a cross-breed between Basquiat and your average Hoboken douchebag.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 5 January 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

not clicking on anything called fecalface.com

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 5 January 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

Good idea, it is actually somehow more depressing than seeing someone with shit on their face

f. scott baio (nate_patrin), Friday, 5 January 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

Note to bad generic art professor straight from Central Casting: WATCH ONE STYLE WARS

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 5 January 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

David Choe got arrested for punching out an undercover detective in Tokyo in December of 2004. Then he spent four months in solitary confinement in a Japanese prison. Deprived of his usual drawing and painting tools, David improvised materials out of whatever he could scrape together in his tiny cell, including soy sauce and his own urine

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

there are so many ridiculous comments on this thread i don't even know where to start

didn't we do the whole graf-as-rebellious/revolutionary-statement thing like 25 years ago?

so what do you think of oil painting and stained glass and other 1000 yr old art forms?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

and the threadstarter: is this your perverse revenge for people posting bunnybrains pics and being like "HAHA FREE IMRPOV SUX"?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

i'm just saying you can't pick out one bad artist and be like "oh ho, the art world is so dumm"

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

The dude can draw.

Vahid, I think the point is not "don't work in 25-year-old mediums" but "don't take a 25-year-old statement and throw it in everyone's face like you came up with it"

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 5 January 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

yeah but everybody working in every medium says banal shit about their work and their method - EVERY graffiti artist says the stuff that david choe says, just like every single fucking quarterback says the same crap on sunday evening and every single guitarist says the same shit in interviews.

if this dude was a genius speaker or genius thinker about art he'd be a motivational speaker or art historian (or professional blogger or ILXor) ... are you disappointed he doesn't give a good interview? or has anything to say? if his mouth had anything interesting to say he wouldn't need to do art, right??

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 06:04 (eighteen years ago)

every graffiti artist does the stuff that david choe does

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Friday, 5 January 2007 06:05 (eighteen years ago)

yes! (or at least every SF-school graffiti artist ... hi dere BARRY MCGEE) and that's why he's wack, but he's not because of that interview or anything he says or does in it.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

but again, is it really so crazy and damning to say that there's a post-grafitti idiom?

like there AREN'T idioms in free improv or studio art or performance art or arthouse films or stoner rock or anything else?

(this doesn't address whether or not you get anything out of the particular idiom ... if you don't you don't, but pointing out that whoa there is an idiom doesn't earn you a biscuit)

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

that's the main reason why he's wack. the interview and the he acts in it further illustrate this point. aleksey vayner meets fecal face.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Friday, 5 January 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

"the way he acts"

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Friday, 5 January 2007 06:12 (eighteen years ago)

hell i wouldn't even care if people wanted to label all post-graffiti art wack (and believe me everytime i see people drooling over futura 2000 i share the sentiment) as long as they wanted to give at least one cogent reason (OMG HE MOVED FROM LA TO SAN HO). but instead, this thread, like the rest of ILE, is pretty lazy in that regard. oh well.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 06:53 (eighteen years ago)

my cogent reason for finding him uninteresting is his self-absorbed capitalist nihilistic irony as MOVEMENT thesis. He talks about loving Barron Storey being his great svengali and i always found dude boring. Find this guy boring too, Banyai does better illustration and most of queens does better graf. Plus, fuckhead did that one run by a really pretty wall of beautiful tags just fucking spraying a line across it like a numbnuts.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:02 (eighteen years ago)

Plus, fuckhead did that one run by a really pretty wall of beautiful tags just fucking spraying a line across it like a numbnuts

actually i thought that part was pretty awesome

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:14 (eighteen years ago)

i see what you did there

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

but i'm sure nobody is crying about their tags.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

it's a weak move, no matter how you slice it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:18 (eighteen years ago)

i agree w/ you though about barron storey, i find that whole school of illustration generally nasty, though i have trouble articulating why. i think it's sort of funny that a lot of these street art / skate art guys have this illustration style that looks just like new yorker covers.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:18 (eighteen years ago)

versa vis really, but yeah, same difference.
When that Storey style is less clumsily executed, i'm generally okay with it (McKean's stuff never bugs me); but naming him as your zenith makes me think that you ain't got much to say.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:21 (eighteen years ago)

did rob liefield go to school w/ these guys? maybe that's why, i was really into xmen just before liefield got his dirty paws on it, since then i've just had this thing about overaggressive chicken scratch contour lines.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:23 (eighteen years ago)

this thing = a deep seated aversion

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:24 (eighteen years ago)

again, in the right hands, overaggressive chicken scratch contour (crumb, spiegelman, segar) can be a beautiful thing, it's when it has no real soul behind it that i can't stand it.

Funny connection there; this guy could be the Liefeld of the graf world. Though really, this (From uplink) is what put me in the "man, fuck this guy" camp:

Q - Your monster Scion truck was pretty sweet. What happens to those cars after Miami? Did you get to keep it?

A - I was at soul assasins studio last month and cartoon has his car, so I can't wait for the day I get mine. I'm gonna wreck that shit in the first week.

YEAH! WRECK THAT SHIT DUDE! AWESOME!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:27 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno, like i said, maybe i'm just pathologically averse to that sort of thing, the only "street art" i gravitate towards is like the geoff mcfettridge / reas / kevin lyons / michael leon school of clean blocky characters

you never catch those guys saying dumb shit either!

vahid (vahid), Friday, 5 January 2007 07:31 (eighteen years ago)

as i'm blocked from youtube anyone care to let us know what this is about?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 5 January 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

"and the threadstarter: is this your perverse revenge for people posting bunnybrains pics and being like "HAHA FREE IMRPOV SUX"?

-- vahid (vfoz...), January 5th, 2007."......I dont think starting a thread about Dayvit Cjho is gonna free me of years of derisive comments,i'm just sayin...It was a thought I had and I threw it out there.Im not alone in these thoughts.Artworld doesn't necessarily equate to Art anyways. It's old tropes im weakly illuminating with a childs flashlight,no biggie. And i also think much of the free improv scene is just as bloated with blowhards not getting blowjobz no matter how much they say they are.

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)
