Not wholly unexpected, but it's always an event of sorts when a major Royal pops their clogs. Another stroke yesterday, coupled with more heart problems finished her off.

Ally C, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

aren't you American? Do Americans care about the royals? well i never.

hamish, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha. Is Scotland American territory now?

Ally C, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, he's Scottish. They care about the Royals a lot less than most Americans!

However, my mum has odd views on the Britsh royal family, even for an American. She thinks they should be forcibly relieved of all their plunder, which would then be used for improving conditions for British people.

suzy, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I have all their tiaras?

Ally C, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't want to be a cynic, but given the general apathy re. the Golden Jubilee, wouldn't it be SOOOOOO convenient for the House of Windsor's PR were the Queen Mother to pop her clogs in, say, May?

Marcello Carlin, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but the queen mum died last september, surely? they've just using a stand-in till they can announce it for maximum impact. would liz2 actually want the Day of the Celebration of Herself bigged up via a sympathy vote for her mum? Good for The Firm maybe, sure, but only at the expense of admitting that she [eg liz2] has cocked it up a bit?

princess margaret had a bit of a rubbish life, perks not withstanding: her mum and her big sister behaved very cruelly towards her over her one true love... one of the things that genuinely baffles me about royal- fanciers is their total blindness towards the emotional damage all this "duty" malarkey actually does to those "born" to it...

mark s, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Queen mum died along time ago but shes managed to pickle herself so it will take effect a few years from now.

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another excuse for pictures of her maj ERII in her 20s. Rowr!

one down...how many to go till the republic?

goeff, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought that the "Royalist" BBC, on 5Live over did it this morning canning all regular programs in the morning.

I switched over to Talksport.

DJ Martian, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why I'm hoping the Queen Mum is actually immortal, there won't be any decent telly for *weeks* when she has her final encounter with a salmon bone.

DG, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

QM is BIONIC, she's the six million overdraft woman, ho ho...

CarsmileSteve, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah DJM so be thankful we've *got* other broadcasters now that don't peddle the royalist line, because this is a key factor in the death of deference (1990 Broadcasting Act a hidden step on the road to a republic)?

Mark S is right about how horrible her life ended up being: one of the books I wish I had here right now is a 70s biography of her that used to be kept in the stockroom when I was in the Scouts, and which would become a more fascinating period piece with every moment ...

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

erm meh, that's my reaction. The thing that's got me about all this is that all the hangers on are coming out of the closet today saying how warm and lovely she was, when for the last ten years or so we've heard what a gin-soaked old witch she was, with hardly a good word for any one. Then again I'm hardly a royalist so I'm probably biased.

chris at home, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I claimed Scotland in the name of New York, sorry, you're American now Ally C.

Ally, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh well. Does anyone want a kilt?

Ally C, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Death scares me (=major reason je suis un vegetarian), and when I first heard this I thought blah, but it started to get to me yesterday evening. Strange.

Graham, Sunday, 10 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Margaret - that was the "The Irish yeh, they're pigs" one?

dave q, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it was, I think. But it wasn't the "Isn't P.W. Botha a great leader?" one, that was the Queen Muvva.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This news saddened me. So did the contrast between the public indifference and the irritating, emotion-obscuring outburst that followed D Windsor's death. And I write as no royalist.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the death neither saddened or gladdened me (i want the removal of th royals, i have no interest in their death or otherwise). yes of course the coverage was going to be less than diana windsors but it still took up a hell of a lot of tv on sunday. also the unexpected manner of DWs death made that coverage even bigger.

gareth, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Although I clearly remember the actual public indifference there was in London on the Sunday when Diana died. I was living in East Dulwich at the time and I remember Laura saying to me, "you know of course if it had been Shabba Ranks killed in a car crash it would be black armbands all round here." We wandered into central London later in the day and there was no public weeping, no acknowledgement even of her death (not even in St James' Park - a fairly average- sized crowd round Buck House). But then we didn't go to Kensington Palace/Chelsea/Knightsbridge, which was of course where all the real mourning was taking place.

Back to Margaret - wasn't there a story about her getting high with Marvin Gaye in the gents or something (or it might have been the one about Mr Gaye booked for a Royal Variety Performance to be attended by PM but then got stage-fright and hid in the gents)?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

she also did coke w. Ms Faithful apparently

anthony, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Margaret was supposedly also quite a fan of Dave Swarbrick, master of the electric violin (you know, the one the Telegraph said was dead when he wasn't).

Marcello's post reminds me that, according to Nick Cohen in the Observer (one of the few newspaper columnists I trust, more-or-less) the actual scale of the crowds at Diana's funeral, though considerable, was nothing like what had been anticipated. I can't remember South Dorset disappearing into a slew of navel-gazing on the Sunday, either.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcello Carlin psychic powers SHOCKAH!
