Yo momma

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

I love Primark. The first time I took my kids to the newly-opened one in Oxford, they shrieked loudly and gleefully to the girl at the checkout "this is like a charity shop, only with new stuff!!"

C J (C J), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

Old skool soft drink from Tesco, eg shandy and especially ginger beer.

I bought some Space Raiders a while back and they were pretty much inedible... unless Space Invaders is actually a wholly different thing

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

I know one of the check out girls at the Oxford Primark.

New Mark H (New MarkH), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

Primark is also hit because it is owned by Wittington Investments, a company that also owns Fortnum & Mason, which sells foie gras, thus incurring a further loss of ethical points.

Primark shoppers are bulking up Fortnum £ Mason! Should someone add foie gras to the other thread? Have no idea if it's expensive or not, I've never had it.

At the top end of the [ethical] scale were brands such as Equop, Hug, Gossypium and Bishopston Trading.

WHOM?

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, I've never heard of them, either

they must be expensive

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

from primark article:
> At the top end of the scale were brands such as Equop, Hug, Gossypium and Bishopston Trading.

who? (ha, xpost)

i think the only clothes i've bought in last two years have been from either primark or m&s (m&s was second on the list of badness). must change this (but their £6 long sleeved t-shirts are great. as are m&s's £9.50 jeans).

My Koogy Weighs A Ton (koogs), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

mp3s from tunetribe.com / bleep.com (1/3 the price of buying the vinyl, even after the recent 50p price hike, and no need to convert them yourself)

My Koogy Weighs A Ton (koogs), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

Spanish football tickets.

Make that Spanish football tickets that don't involve Real Madrid or Barcelona visiting a provincial team - I've tried and failed to go and see Malaga playing either of them through not having a house handy to remortgage.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

The thing about foie gras though is that it is really really REALLY good. It's not that expensive because you only need a couple of schmears of it to feel completely full, so you can buy the smallest can/jar of it they sell. (Just don't eat the yellowy grease that's on top - although you can save that for cooking.) I figure that blonde girl who went to the South Pole alone faster than anyone else should have brought some along with her, its fat-to-mass ratio is so TO THE EXTREME.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

That article's over a year old.

I'm just saying.

Does anyone have CCTV footage of Koogy in Primark?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

mp3s from tunetribe.com / bleep.com (1/3 the price of buying the vinyl, even after the recent 50p price hike, and no need to convert them yourself)

although it would be nice if they were priced according to duration (1p a second) perhaps (nobody does this i know).

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

and yeh i was thinking of Space Raiders not Space Invaders too.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

yes, 99p for 11 seconds of melt banana does seem a bit much (but just a bit). i guess that's why tunetribe have just put up the price of dnb downloads - they tend to be twice the length of your pop singles. (1p a second = very steep mind)

> Does anyone have CCTV footage of Koogy in Primark?

Primark probably.

My Koogy Weighs A Ton (koogs), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

If we're talking football (which we weren't entirely but hey undulge me!), the entire Bolton Wanderers squad (aside from Anelka who was expensive and equally not crap) totally fit the cheap and not crap bill. I prefer New Look to Primark btw. I got two pairs of 'disco leggings' for four quid.

Nobodys Prawn (Nobodysprawn), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

FOPP!

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, it must have been me who caused the space invaders/raiders confusion. I think I might buy some the next time I'm in Spar.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

New Look is always full of intimidating teens.... I like supermarkets for clothes.

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

Uniqlo Uniqlo Uniqlo

The problem with Peacocks and Primark is that although they are cheap, they are also crap, and the clothes fall to pieces too quickly.

and was she...?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

As with all the items in the shop, she was covered with the blood of asian children.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

is this primark porn?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

Amazon Marketplace!

omg yes. so much easier than ebay whether you're buying or selling CDs/DVDs/books.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

I really should have seen that coming.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

Howabout CDs in general?

When they came out in shops properly, they were about £11 or so.

Nowadays, £7.99 for new release..

I quite enjoy rummaging around in TK Maxx, it has a great jumble sale vibe to it. Plus quite often there are hot ladies about.

Accentmonkey: on Amazon (UK) Marketplace, if sellers are prepared to ship outside the UK, it says so in the used & new list under "Delivery" ("International Delivery Available", it says, but if international delivery is not abvailable, it says nothing).

Thanks Tim. I am so used to buying things on eBay, where most sellers either don't know that Ireland is a separate country (I had an irate email from someone once who quoted me for postage, had to pay more at the post office, and then got pissed off when I laughed at her for not knowing geograhy and told her it was her own fault) or are worried that I'm some kind of Nigerian scammer or something.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

Is it called TK Maxx in the UK? There's a shop that sounds similar here called TJ Maxx. Maybe they're just doing it alphabetically and in Deutschland it's called TL Maxx?

http://www.tciaec.com/stock/functions/VDG_Gallery/uploads/tjmaxx_ext382.jpg

I hit the TJ Maxx/Ross/Marshall's weekly because I don't have friends, and they do have awesome deals on sneaks and pants and tumblers. I got a pair of knee-high leather boots by Børn for $25, woot woot.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

It's the same store. No idea why it's K in the UK and J in the US.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

DVDs of Little Shop of Horrors (w/Moranis et. al. musical) and BATMAN: the Movie (w/Adam West) are always $5 and awesome. I almost bought a $5 copy of Funny Farm w/Chevy Chase t'pther day but got banned by my fiance.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

Rice.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

The incredible $4 chile relleno platter at the restaurant down the block from me. Rellenos in general.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

TJ Maxxxxxxxxxxxx is the best. I raided the Muskegon location over Christmas break and am wearing top from there today and shoes from DSW. Neither was originally cheap, though.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

Their clothes selection for slender men is shit. But whose isn't?

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

I once found a decent djembe in TJ Maxx for $25.

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

My mom-in-law & I drove an 1800 mile trip and made sure to hit every TJ on the way. God, that was fun. I got a wonderful MSRP silk skirt for $10.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

All their larger size shoes for women are like fucking tanks, though.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

Yah. :( I am a size 10 too and all that's ever left after new stock is fucking Minnie Mouse looking wedges. I get good stuff sometimes tho and like I said, it's because I go there every week as I have little better to do besides make rice and play Dragon Quest VIII (also cheap & great!).

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Previous gen consoles.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

In a couple of weeks, TK Maxx will be awesome because the sales will be over in the normal shops and all the goodies will be taken there to be flogged off.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

Holiday foodstuffs. Just because Christmas is over, doesn't mean I've stopped liking spiced plum jam, pickled onions and mincemeat. And now it's all reduced, hurrah!

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

I remember in high school, my best friend at the time got a job at TJ Maxx, his very first customer (working the register) was a Russian immigrant who spoke ZERO English and was buying, literally, $250 worth of panties. He never went back. In fact I think he still has the vest.

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Indeed. We cleaned up down the supermarket the other day. Crowns of turkey, half price. Fill yer freezer.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, we've been doing that too. Hurrah!

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

I like to buy cheap old Christmas CANDY! Yay! However, I discovered my mom (when I was a kid) would buy 75% off Xmas clearance candy and save it until the next xmas. Same w/Easter. So now, sad to say, fresh marshmallow peeps and licorice just taste weird and wrong to me.

Abbott (Abbott), Friday, 5 January 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 6 January 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

My local TJ Maxx isn't that great. They only have one register open, and the clearance prices aren't discounted enough.

I like the Kohl's clearance racks better.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Saturday, 6 January 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

TJ Maxx is called TK Maxx over here to avoid confusion with William Shatner vehicle TJ Hooker, which remains a mainstay of British television schedules.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 6 January 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

why IS that show never repeated on Bravo or whatever?

reverto levidensis (blueski), Saturday, 6 January 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

Oh god Kohl's is my mom's favorite store, followed closely to TJ Maxx. She took my to Kohl's when I had to get some new clothes for work, and I cried in the dressing while trying on various incarnations of "mom slacks." I'll take Target and Old Navy over Kohl's and TJ anyday. I have found ok stuff at Marshalls, but you really have to search for it--it's just not worth it for me. Good news: There is a Mango opening in the DC area. Bad news: It's at Tyson's Center.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 6 January 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

The TJM nearest my hometown is a fucking gold mine. I probably buy 70% of my wardrobe there in two shopping trips per year! Supplemented with home-sewn items and the occasional sample sale it's genius.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 6 January 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

TJ Maxx is awesome for their great deals on purses and bags. You can get Nine West bags for cheap prices there!

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

The Maxx brothers had a massive falling out in 1872, and they ended up splitting old man Maxx's transatlantic discount clothing store chain in two. The US side was larger than the UK side, so a cash adjustment was forthcoming to the brother who moved to the UK.

It's a similar story to the genesis of Sam Smith's and John Smith's breweries, the difference being that while the Maxxes glowered at each other across the Atlantic ocean, the Smiths' hatred only had to travel the width of Tadcaster, Yorkshire. In both cases, the firms have now come to an uneasy accommodation.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

I can't even tell if he's joking or not. I friend of mine showed me a classy Cynthia Rowley bag she purchased at the Maxx over the weekend so perhaps I need to re-evaluate my position there-of.
