Taking Sides: English vs Irish vs Scottish vs Welsh

Not the country, the nationality i would probably be welsh because you would have a language that no one else understands and be born in a country that people dont know even exists

Chupa-Cabras, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Who doesn't know Wales exists?

Ally C, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ireland has its own language so haaaaaaa.

This the most patriotic I'll get. The fact that you didn't even know we had a language surely makes ours all the better.

Ronan, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Excuse me all four of these nations have their own language, even England, so haaa back at you.

I am (i) and (iii) but know more words in (iv) than (iii). To (ii) I go not. Though actually I had a fab holiday on the West Coast when I was 13, gazing out ovah the mutinous Shannon waves...

mark s, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you ever come back you should hire a boat and go up the Shannon. All the towns along the way are lively and have nice food and if the weather's good it's a great holiday. Honest.

Ronan, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Scots invented just about every cool electronic gadget, from the telephone (Alexanderrrrrrrrr Graham Bell) to colour TV (John Logie Bairrrrrrrrrrrrd). We are the Japanese of the west.

Momus, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Och, all rrrrrrrrrrright, not colourrrrrrrrrrr.

Momus, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I doubt it was a Scotsman who invented those little keyring sound effect boxes. *DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE- OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO* *KZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ* They're cool.

DG, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My biog of theremin (who invented the, er, theremin) claims he also invented television, several years before Baird, but the invention was suppressed — or more like diverted — by Stalin, who cared less about the masses viewing Pets Win Prizes than closed-circuit surveillance. In the west, Theremin — a semi- reluctant industrial spy for the USSR — passed info on to RCA (Radio Corporation of America), in return for snippets he could pass onto the KGB, until he discovered that RCA had taken television mainstream and the KGB had kidnapped him (ie Theremin) and shipped him off to Siberia, where he saved his life by designing bugs for them.

mark s, Saturday, 9 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

scottish, for the sake of answering the question, and only cos i have heaps of scottish heritage and i live in dunedin, "edinburgh of the south". and cos my friend logan is there.

eight years pass...

OK

Graeme McDowell.

The internet can't help me here, after a rudimentary check.

Who gets him? (apart from NI, obviously, and ffs they don't count on their own, that's essentially a casting vote)

Your search - "graeme mcdowell" "potato farls" - did not match any documents.
Your search - "graeme mcdowell" "fried soda bread" - did not match any documents.
Your search - "graeme mcdowell" "full english breakfast" - About 46 results (0.40 seconds)

Humbert Humberto Suazo (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 10:53 (fifteen years ago)

ultra nate dogg (history mayne), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 10:57 (fifteen years ago)

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 10:57 (fifteen years ago)

i think ur by definition a "citizen of europe" if ur a citizen of ireland OR a subject of the british crown

ultra nate dogg (history mayne), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 10:59 (fifteen years ago)

He's Irish - born on the island of Ireland
He's a UK citizen - being from Northern Ireland and holding a UK passport
Ireland and UK are both in Europe
He has represented Ireland, The United Kingdom and Europe in various team golf tournaments

not hard really

xp

Remember when Mr Banhart was a replicant? (darraghmac), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:01 (fifteen years ago)

i find calling people irish because they were born on the island called ireland a bit suspect considering some of the people born on the island of ireland would chin you if you called them irish.

Humbert Humberto Suazo (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:01 (fifteen years ago)

^ try saying that quickly

Humbert Humberto Suazo (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:01 (fifteen years ago)

Ian Paisley calls himself Irish.

put your Villa on this one (onimo), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:01 (fifteen years ago)

He's a UK citizen - being from Northern Ireland and holding a UK passport

"british" imo

ultra nate dogg (history mayne), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:01 (fifteen years ago)

well he's legally entitled to be 'british' and 'irish' both if he wants, hence the tayto test

Remember when Mr Banhart was a replicant? (darraghmac), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:03 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, in terms of citizenship and official nationality he is British. He was also born in Ireland (not the Republic of Ireland) - that makes him Irish - geographically, not politically.

Remember when Mr Banhart was a replicant? (darraghmac), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:08 (fifteen years ago)

can't someone be both irish and british if they so desire? not just legally but sentimentally too

nakhchivan, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:11 (fifteen years ago)

The big chunk of land containing the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is Ireland. Every Northern Irish (there's a clue in the "Irish" bit of "Northern Irish") person I know describes themselves as Irish - most of them also describe themselves as British.

put your Villa on this one (onimo), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:12 (fifteen years ago)

onimotm, and even a lot of the norn-irish i know who v much identify as 'irish' wouldn't necessarily wish for that to be at the expense of the 'norn' part.

Remember when Mr Banhart was a replicant? (darraghmac), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 11:16 (fifteen years ago)

really they should rename the province 'british ireland'
