Boa Morte signs for the Hammers.

Glutton.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

Freddy Eastwood to sign for every team ever.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

alongside david nugent and anthony stokes

-- (688), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

mascherano to liverpool, has this actually happened?

-- (688), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

david bentley to man united?? i can kind of see this

-- (688), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

Dear Scots/Arsenal fans: is this Stokes lad any good then?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

and if stokes is going to get sold, and lupoli moves to napoli, that really only leaves bendtner out of the nextgen gunners strikers (except for that mexican guy, vela?)

-- (688), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

Why would Man Utd want another mediocre Premiership striker when they already have Alan Smith?

Is anyone going in for Brian McBride? I can see Everton or Newcastle or someone benefiting from having him in the squad.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

Henry to Chelsea? He's fallen out with Wenger I reckon.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

dunno, theyve just let boa morte go, and are *listening* to offers for helguson and collins john, so seems somewhat less likely

-- (688), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Leighton Baines and Curtis Davies to Spurs maybe. And probably another central midfielder just because we like them.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Defoe is not going anywhere!

If Robbie Keane was fit, I think he might have gone to Villa.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Also Anthony Gardner to Charlton on loan. It's written in the stars.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

Bye bye SWP. Sorry for buying you in the first place.

How good is this Bale wonderkid?

Pete W (peterw), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

McBride was at Everton for a couple of months in 2003 - he scored in almost every game. A better target man than Beattie (who will give us more than £2m for him?).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

Beattie for Charlton then?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

cant find the original thread but If someone introduced themselves as Stern John would you think we've had too many of these threads now? on his way back to birmingham?

-- (688), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

Re. Stokes from the Scottish football thread on the Sandbox (edited a bit for clarity):

His record is excellent - top scorer in the SPL despite playing for a team in the bottom half. 13 goals in 17 games. Looks a natural finisher and has a bit of pace.
Not much of a centre half though :-P

-- Onimo drank ALL the wine! (gerry.wat...) (webmail), December 29th, 2006 6:17 PM. (nu_onimo) (later)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's worth bearing in mind though that 6 of his goals came against Dunfermline who remain shite and Dundee Utd who were shite at the time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anthony Stokes has scored a fair few goals (one against us that took Falkirk to penalties against us in the CIS Cup), and got Neil Lennon sent off last week. Don't suppose he's endearing himself to the Celtic support much. He looks a pretty good player. Then again, so did Derek Riordan, so again, I'm not convinced Celtic need him or that he'll be great if he gets there.

xpost!

-- ailsa_xx (ailsa.watson@...) (webmail), December 29th, 2006 6:21 PM. (ailsa_xx) (later)

Summary: looks alright, but not convinced he's anything special. (this was written before Derek Riordan decided to get good a day later and keep his place in the team after six months of scratching his arse on the bench or in the stand)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

Of the big four, I doubt Man Utd will move for anyone bar Hargreaves. Arsenal probably some African wonderkid I've never heard of. Chelsea god knows. I can't really see anyone else going to Liverpool.

I'm wondering if someone will make a mega-bid for Aaron Lennon or whether they'll wait til the summer.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if new Northampton Town boss Stuart Grey will make any last minute signings.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say it'll be the summer before someone comes in for Lennon, maybe some big European team.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:24 (eighteen years ago)

Also which shit team is going to go in for Carlton Cole this time?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

Chelsea will go on and on about 'refusing to be hold to ransom' over Micah Richards, then buy him for £18m anyway. Plus JM will play his annual 'crap midfielder from Russia' card.

I hope we make a mega-bid for Ledley.

How long is Hargreaves crocked for?

Pete W (peterw), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone want Alan "remember me? I'm the saviour of England's left-sided midfield problem, honest" Thompson?

Celtic have Steven Pressley. Rangers supposed to be unveiling Andy Webster today. A couple of weeks ago I was having a conversation with someone (possibly Onimo, probably my brother) about how that would show how Celtic had come on, when we sign the younger talented one and Rangers would ignore him and go in all guns blazing for the past-it old haddie. Got *that* one wrong, didn't we?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:27 (eighteen years ago)

The reason I'm worried about Lennon is that Chelsea now look badly in need of wide players but I think if Spurs wanted £18m for Carrick they'll be asking ludicrous money here.

Shevchenko farmed off on loan. Please.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

How good is this Bale wonderkid?

My mate (who's a Southampton fan) raves about him (not in the musical sense).

Chelsea now look badly in need of wide players

I thought they had them, they were just choosing not to use them.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

Manchester City are after Ebi Smolarek, who at least has a name that lends itself to chants.

I hope Pearce is considering a move for Robbie Keane. I don't think he's ever failed to score against us.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

rumours about ben haim to chelsea. be a lot cheaper than richards. ironically the injuries at the back may prompt chelsea to go for this kind of player, throw him straight in

-- (688), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

I thought they had them, they were just choosing not to use them.

Not really. Cole crocked, and Robben almost always selected when fit. SWP played a lot recently and is terrible.

Pete W (peterw), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

You can have Richardson, Park and Fletcher in exchange for Drogba if you want.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

SWP looks SO anxious to impress. It's sad.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

I thought they had them, they were just choosing not to use them.

Robben is injured, Joe Cole is out for ages and it looks like SWP has gone to pot over all that time on the bench. Doesn't leave many options.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

Erm or what Pete said.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

kalou was sort of bought to play that role as well i thought?

-- (688), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Bring back Charlie Cooke.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

I have a bad feeling that Martin Jol would do swapsies for Robben in exchange for Lennon. MJ lives for the transfer window.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

Kalou's not a proper winger, and was never intended to play as many games as he has this season. Nice feet, but awful technique in front of goal.

Bring back Pat Nevin.

Pete W (peterw), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

George Boyd - Stevenage to Peterborough for 260K - a record fee received by a conference club

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

I think I saw SWP do something good not long ago.

Wot no Villa signings?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 5 January 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)

I think I saw SWP do something good not long ago

at least one assist (swooping cross) for Drogba over the festive period

then of course he fell over

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 5 January 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

Leeds United have signed Tore Andre Flo.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

you forgot the 'p'

onimo (onimo), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

Old joke alert! (I did think about it)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

i loved TAF

reverto levidensis (blueski), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Shevchenko farmed off on loan. Please.

what about if they loaned him to exeter and he scored like 40 goals, wouldn't you still have to pay out? does the bet specify goals scored for chelsea?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Who next for Leeds?

Jesper Gronkjaer - 5/3
Mario Melchiot - 5/1
Mario Stanic - 10/1
Gianfranco Zola - 50/1
Winston Bogarde - 500/1

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

what about if they loaned him to exeter and he scored like 40 goals

Dude for a second after reading that I sat there worrying about whether it might actually happen. Then I realised what I was doing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

The Flo to Leeds thing is nuts - I thought he'd retired about 5 yrs ago. But apparently he's only 33.

Spurs to offload some of their large number of midfielders? Matt?

Murphy, Davids, Ziegler? Routledge to make Pompey switch permanent?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

Ziegler I suspect will go, possibly Murphy as well although we appear to be playing him quite a lot even if he isn't playing well. Davids I think they just like having around for dressing room morale.

Routledge I think might still be in the long-term picture but I haven't seen enough of him to tell whether he should've been called back from Fulham when Lennon got injured.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

We've signed the Man Utd reserve captain! We're gonna steam the conference!

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Friday, 5 January 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

stoke gone to sunderland for £2m.

Storefront Church (688), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

stokes, i mean

Storefront Church (688), Monday, 8 January 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Nigel Quashie goes to West Ham - to get relegated 3 times in a row?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 8 January 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

Defenders throughout the Premiership's top clubs were today trembling at the news that Jon Stead has signed for Sheffield United.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 January 2007 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

Ade Edmondson, of "The Noisy Piss Routine" fame, is an Exeter City fan, he says in Radio Times. This looks to me like a store of potential future bizarro episodes when he reaches retirement age and wants to "put something back".

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 12 January 2007 12:58 (eighteen years ago)

stead has the potential to be a very good player. weird that this seems like last chance saloon for him already

Storefront Church (688), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

dude, ade edmondson has a season ticket and everything, he might even be a member of the trust...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

He sits about ten seats away from my Dad!

I have had enough Exeter City Bizarro for the time being thank you very much, and am quite happy for now with the (hopefully rewarding) gring of Exeter City sane-and-responsiblo.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

By gring, I mean grind. Obviously.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 January 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

(BTW it's poor old Torquay bizarro at the moment: their season seems to be scarily parallel to our self-destruction season a few years back, though sadly they don't appear to have any famously fraudulent celebrity figureheads, which spoils the effect a bit.)

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 January 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

Torquay were top 5 after the first half-dozen games this season,a nd have managed about 2 points since. What happened, Tim?

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Friday, 12 January 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

My (ill-informed) understanding is that the fellow who's owned the club for donkey's years (and achieved a weird kind of stability through ruthless control of costs) finally sold up to someone reputed to have his eyes on a property deal involving the TUFC ground (always a good sign, right?). I think it's fair to say that the fans aren't overly keen on this new bloke.

Change of manager, some exotically named chap from Eastern Europe arrives, dressing room not a happy place apparently. String of draws, turning into a string of losses.

However, they do seem to have signed a bunch of players and they've just got Colin Lee back again as Asst Manager so maybe they'll pull it around. It does look bad and everyone involved is giving the impression of hating everyone else involved.

I feel sorry for them and hope they stay up, or at least get a Trust in place fast enough to be a safety net if everything goes wrong.

I was reading about a classic incident where they demanded their keeper (Abbey) move to TQ, despite only having a few months left on his contract. Keeper says he will, but only if they give him a new, 18 month deal. They say: no. Abbey's contract terminated by mutual consent, but he plays another game. TQ are 2-0 down with 20 minutes to go, and Kubik uses his final substitution to replace Abbey with their only other keeper, who's a young 'un. Explains that they were going to get nowt from the game anyway so they might as well give their new first team keeper some experience! This reminds me so much of the goings on at ECFC a few years back, I could cry.

DISCLAIMER: all of the above has been gleaned from gossip and interweb innuendo.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

Tbh that goalkeeper thing is exactly what I'd do in Footie Manager 2007.

I have heard their new keeper (Horsell?) is actually pretty decent. They'll need him to be.

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

Total confidence boosting story for all involved:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/t/torquay_united/6240243.stm

"Kubik has admitted some players are not happy with something at Plainmoor.

""In the last couple of weeks I have had some talks with the players," Kubik told BBC Radio Devon.

""But they have not given me any idea of whether we at the club are doing anything wrong but there is something here that is not right.""

Tim (Tim), Friday, 12 January 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)
