Beardless men: how often do you shave?

I'm pretty sure if I had to shave every day my face would be a bloody mess.

I don't feel like searching for existing threads on this subject.

Joe Isuzu's Petals (Rock Hardy), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Roughly every 36 hours.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

Every day, but I use a shaving brush and shave in the shower.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 5 January 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

every two/three days.

benrique (Enrique), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Every day, if I want anyone to kiss me.

xpost I don't shave IN the shower, but always right after the shower and right before bed, so I'm still fresh in the morning.

there to preserve disorder (kenan), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

Every day.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

i shd qualify my comment but ach. i had a beard till monday.

benrique (Enrique), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

I shave in the shower as well, M., and can vouch for its benefit, but what benefit is the shaving brush?

Joe Isuzu's Petals (Rock Hardy), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

I shave every couple days. At night usually, cuz by the end of day 2 my girlfriend starts complaining.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Every day. If I go home in the evening and am out later I might slip an evening shave in too as it grows awful quick.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

I shave every other day (ish), but it's a bad habit, and I should shave every day, cos when I don't shave it's really noticable.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Part of my face daily (rotate), altho too lazy to do more than the cheeks and neck this week.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Every morning.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

Every day. My beard is sparse, but aprox 36 hours after shave you can stick fabric to my face like velcro.

Two/three times a week. Lazy. Hate shaving.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

but what benefit is the shaving brush

This might be bullshit, but I think it perks up the stubble somehow.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

I don't actually consider myself a beardy, but I shave like once a fortnight.
A friend that I've known for about two years did say to me on Xmas Eve that it was the first time she'd seen me without a beard, however. I was rather surprised.

I don't like beardness particularly on myself, I just fucking hate shaving.

teh_kit (g-kit), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

I was shaving my neck yesterday and thinking that for me, every four days is perfect: skin is recovered from previous close shave, stubble doesn't itch yet. And started wondering how beardless men who can't go four days between shaves manage it. Seems tortuous.

Joe Isuzu's Petals (Rock Hardy), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Two weeks would be as bad as daily for me. The itching, gah! It starts on day five lasts for about three days.

Joe Isuzu's Petals (Rock Hardy), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

It seems twisty?

xpost

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

I actually can't shave every day. My stubble doesn't grow that fast and it feels like I'm reaping an already harvested crop. As it were. I end up cutting myself to ribbons.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm on the ~once a week plan. It grows so slowly that if I took care of it any more frequently I would be in razor burn hell.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

Probably twice a week. Once on Saturday and once midweek seems to be the usual for me these days.

I do have a heavy beard, so after a few days it looks rather thick. But luckily I haven't had a job with a dress code in the past six years, so I haven't ever felt the need to be routinely clean-shaven.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

my beard has set me free

my teeth are horrible, I'm gaining weight, I don't understand twelve-tone (dubpl, Friday, 5 January 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Used to be every 48 hours in my early-mid 20s; started to leave it to just twice a week a few years ago and now it's only once a week. Didn't shave between Xmas Eve and 3rd Jan. It's laziness; if 10min spent shaving means I don't have time to eat breakfast or I have to catch the Brixton bus and spend £2 on the Tube or I can't spare Pam the misery of coming downstairs to a sink full of dishes, then I don't shave. It's low on the list of morning priorities. Always used to shave at night in my 20s - perhaps I should go back to that.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

Seems tortuous

Did you drop this 'r'?

Occasionally, on a weekend, I'll skip a day or two, but I'm more uncomfortable not shaving than shaving. After about a day and a half, I feel all itchy.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

I'm more uncomfortable not shaving than shaving

Yeah, that's me in a nutshell. Just *feels* wrong. (FWIW I use an electric razor.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

I only start to get itchy after about a week.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

Every day. Various girlfriends have hinted at trouble if I didn't. Though I quite like letting it have a few days off if I get the chance, especially since the subsequent shave is always that much closer.

=== temporary username === (Mark C), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

The price of shaving cartridges would make me shave less if nothing else did. Four-pack of Mach 3s for $8.25! WTF

Did you drop this 'r'?
I think I picked the wrong word.

Joe Isuzu's Petals (Rock Hardy), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

this is otm. as a part asian, i don't really have to shave more than every other day to keep from looking nappy.

This might be bullshit, but I think it perks up the stubble somehow.

i've heard this too. i think a cup o' soap will be my next affectation.

If you fuck with Jimmy Mod, you call down the thunder (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

Mach 3s are expensive but they do last a while.

onimo (onimo), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I'm grateful for a wife who likes me bearded. She also liked me with long hair, but she couldn't have that once I started going bald on top. (She kept my ponytail as a memento.)

Joe Isuzu's Petals (Rock Hardy), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

She was wise re: the baldness and you were even wiser to listen to her! A happy relationship.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

I need to buy a new electric razor. Brands? The last couple have been Braun.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

No, she couldn't have it because I wouldn't give it to her! She wanted me to keep the long hair even with the baldness, but it looked ridiculous.

Joe Isuzu's Petals (Rock Hardy), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, clarity. In any event, you did the right thing!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

I only shave about every 3 or 4 days most of the time, which isn't often enough really, but I hate shaving.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

I shave about twice a week, I don't mind having minimal stubble.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

In college I shaved about once or twice a week, keeping that important drama-club stubbly intellectual look. This was because I am lazy & cheap and because I was largely hairless due to Irish heritage.

Now I shave every workday (except if I wake up too late as has been happening lately) and maybe one day on the weekends. I use Barbasol and my aging Mach 3 razor, changing the blade every three days or sometimes four. I have sensitive skin and have to go very slowly or I look like Freddy Krueger. A few months ago I went a week without shaving my mustache area and grew a creepy molestache which was roundly denounced by everyone I knew.

This has been "Thrilling Moments in Haikunym Hirsutology." Thank you.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

I still use the Gillette SensorExcell at a rate of about one per week.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

Get the Shaver Saver, M. White!

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

yeah 1x blades a week is hella pricey.

but does the shaver saver really work?

benrique (Enrique), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

I try to get a dozen or so shaves out of my Mach 3s, which is 6-7 weeks at my rate. I bought an enormous quantity of cartridges at Sam's a couple of years ago and haven't had to think about the price for a long time, which is why I was so shocked when I had to buy some the other night.

Joe Isuzu's Petals (Rock Hardy), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

Do Philips Philishave's sell well in Philidelphia?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

NB: Shaving once every two weeks and keeping the razor stored OUT of the shower where it's dry does WONDERS for blade life. Highly recommend.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

every day except on weekends when it's every other day, or if I run out of time in the morning and don' thave meetings to attend at work that day. i used to use cartridge blades but have moved to cheap disposables, they seem to work just as well, I just have to toss them every five shaves or so. electric razors i've had in the past were crap

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 5 January 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

every day but sometimes 1.5-2 days on weekends or occasionally during the week if i'm in like an all-nighter zone

Almost.

I have a pretty thin beard so I can go about two days without notice. When I was in Chicago I had to adhere to a strict no facial hair policy, but here it's a little more lax. I'm currently using my boss being gone to try and grow the beard out a little.

If I were a celebrity, the only products I would endorse would be Mario Badescu Shaving products.

Apply pre-shave conditioner:

http://www.hqhair.com/images/int_cms_products/P_1844_LI.jpg

Shave with whatever cream/razor you're used to and then after pat-drying with a towel, apply after-shave moisturizer:

Seriously worth every penny. Face like a baby's ass.

mahalo 4 ur kokua (grady), Friday, 5 January 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

i shave every day in the shower. I guess i'm lucky in that I never ever get a shaving rash but maybe that's cos i use a decent razor. i'm unlucky as facial hair makes me look weird. at 26 it still grows patchy and fluffy and makes me look like some rubbish baddy teenager.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Friday, 5 January 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

I "shave" -- i.e., cut all the way down but not like razor-smooth -- with a beard trimmer, maybe once a week. Same with my head, every two or three weeks. I can't really do anything with either -- it's not like I can go get an interesting new haircut -- so the only change I get to have in my appearance is the constant fluctuation of relative stubble levels from head to face. (This week I've been doing the very-short-hair + smooth-face Obama look.)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 January 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

Sideburns 3x daily.

Oh for electrolysis.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 January 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

(But see then in two weeks I might reverse to the fresh-shaved-head + beardy look. I can reverse my head-hair polarity at will!)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 5 January 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't so much as trimmed my beard (except to keep my moustache out of my mouth) for over a month. This is the longest my chin-rag has ever gotten. I'm shooting for something in the "Hebrew Prophet/Viking Berserker" range.

It's probably more to do with fluffy facial hair than the quality of razor, seems most people I know with fluff rather than stubble don't get the rash.

These days I go over with an electric razor first and then shave with a Mach 3 to get what the electric razor didn't and I usually get away with it.

I shave every weekday, and Saturday afternoons if I'm going out that night. If I shave more that once every 24 hours, I get rather sore; but equally if I leave it more than a couple of days my skin goes rather nasty too due to lack of exfoliation.

daily, sometimes twice daily. it's always agonizing, and the shaving bumps don't go down. i usually use skin products targeted toward black men, because whitey shit gives me breakouts and shaves that're too close and hurt like beestings widely applied.

Replaces it completely. Closest shave I've ever had, no razor burn at all, saves blades, pleasant light menthol-y smell . . . I don't often fall completely head over heels in love with products, but I can't even imagine going back to cream or gel. I've also tried other shaving oils and this stuff completely destroys them. It's incredible.

Well, it's definitely better than the Mach 3, BUT it seems to go duller faster and thus yields fewer shaves per cartridge. I think I'm gonna back to the Mach 3.

okay this sounds too good to be true. Do you have a tough beard and sensitive skin? If you do, then I'm going to buy a bottle of that stuff right away, but I'm still skeptical right now. Shaving with a straight razor is a painful, bloody experience for me, so I really really want to believe.

ha, yes.

i shave 1 or 2 times a week. it's pretty rare that i need to be clean-shaved for work (if there's a meeting i have to go to, is about it), and my wife is pretty accepting of stubbliness. i don't like shaving, and i also like going from the contrast of smooth to beard-stubbled. being smooth every day is a pain, literally and hasslewise, and boring to boot. why should i look the same every single day? i like the variety. after 7 days or so the hairiness starts to bug me, so i look forward to the razor ritual.
