i imagine these things filling a big hole in the desert like the e.t. atari catridges

and what (ooo), Saturday, 6 January 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know what they are?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 6 January 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

I really love Be@rbrick, though I don't really collect them, just buy one every so often as a present-to-self type thing - I try not to get more than two from any given series (as that way madness and completism lies), but series 13 is so cute my resolve may fail.

I like the Be@rbrick stuff, but I'm more into the Dunnys and Qees.

I realize that I appear to be speaking moonman here to some of you, but I'm not making this all up, I swear.

how expensive are these things, generally speaking

timmy tannin (pompous), Saturday, 6 January 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I've seen things that look like these (I GIS-ed "urban vinyl") in F.P. in Newcastle sometimes. You see the odd one that's cute, but most of them are really ugly (to me), and they're usually pretty expensive? I guess there must be people with hundreds of these things cluttering their homes.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 6 January 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Key word: "clutter". Individually, they really entice me to buy them and enjoy their adorableness any time I want, but then I think of the shelf space and the dusting and the essential uselessness...and I can't do it.

"crappy things that are bafflingly expensive"

friday on the porch (lfam), Saturday, 6 January 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

As a total drooling Jim Woodring fanboy, I've wanted to get the full line of his creations (there must be around a dozen by now.)

As a total broke-ass chump, I haven't gotten any.

When I was weaning myself off of buying shit-tons of CD's I would listen to a few times and then forget about, I started buying a bunch of these. At least I can stare at them and get more visual pleasure than I get from piles of colorful CD spines.

I sort of dig the proletarian art aspect of them. (Not the huge $$$ ones though, those people are INSANE.)

xpost: The Woodring stuff is great, but I don't have any of it.

John Justen says Toonces was one of the most talented cats on televison (johnjus, Saturday, 6 January 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, on the "how expensive?" thing, the lil' ones are usually $6-$8, BTW.

I do pretty much love this:

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 6 January 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

i drop by toy tokyo at least once a month and sorta tempt myself, but reduced space and a realistic wallet stop me... for the most part. I did buy my girl a 75 buck j-import woodring figure for her birthday, tho.

Oh shit, now I know Frank toys exist. Fuck. My house has way too many silly plushies and action figures, this thing is a thing that for me to get into would be to never get out of. It is nice to have a borg holding hands w/a little Virgin Mary atop my TV tho.

Abbott (Abbott), Saturday, 6 January 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

used to be a big fan of strange and bizarre toys in general then grew old and bitter ran out of space, started buying some of the kubrick's. these days happy to take a walk through toy tokyo or look at the websites. weird to think the murakami's exhbit drew 95,000 in la in 2001, some of the big names involved (nike, sony), a rise in hip hop culture in the past five years and yah i ask the same question does anyone else give a ...pop art that nobody wants...gotta be selling japan

my roommate assists for [major ny street artist whose pseudonum begins with "K"] so my house is slowly filling with this stuff. That said, I have two McFarline Gretzky figures (in box!)

Lladro for kids! Are your kids going to look at them and have the same reaction that we have to blown-glass clowns, I wonder?

I'm not saying that in any kind of judgemental way, I actually am a little in love with Pupshaw there.

Some of 'em are ok (I'd like a Drinky Crow figure if one exists), but I don't really like most of them (or the commercial aspect of 'street art' - Nike sponsorships, etc.. I see a big difference in these and 'proletarian art' like screenprints).

That's pretty good, but I think I'd want Drinky to be a stuffed toy to go along with Sock Monkey. Real buttons for eyes and all that, you know?

Candy: tastes like chicken, if chicken was a candy. (Austin, Still), Sunday, 7 January 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

Drinky Crow is boozing it up on top of my TV. Sometime he gets so drunk that he loses the bottle.

A stuffed one would be the ultimate, though.

gr8080, Sunday, 19 August 2007 22:53 (seventeen years ago)

This just places you among the numberless hordes who collect stuff for no other reason than they think it looks cool and they're a bit obsessive about it. Now that you have a display case, you can sit for hours and look at your stuff. This seems daft, but harmless. I mean, it could have been guns or knives. That would be much creepier.

Aimless, Sunday, 19 August 2007 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

I have a Super Bowl XXJWIJA-whatever logo football helmet signed by MARK RYPIEN. If I can find it, will sell to any ILX Redskins fan on the cheap.

milo z, Sunday, 19 August 2007 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

I will give you $1.00 US for it plus shipping. No insurance pls.

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Sunday, 19 August 2007 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

nb: it's a replica helmet, so not suitable for giving to your cousin to play Pop Warner in

milo z, Sunday, 19 August 2007 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

I suppose I'm enabling you by saying this, but I think it looks nice and neat, John. I wouldn't want to clean the glass or dust the figures, but hey - I don't have to!

Also, it will only really look like a shop when there are 10 of them.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 19 August 2007 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

I am glad you do not keep them in the box, Mr. Justen.

A neighbor of mine had a display case just like that for her precious moments porcelain figurines. But with more mirrors and obviously way stupid looking bcz, you know, the precious moments.

Abbott, Sunday, 19 August 2007 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

RJG, Sunday, 19 August 2007 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

I'm just glad John hasn't started collecting Precious Moments figurines. See how much worse things could be?!

Sara R-C, Sunday, 19 August 2007 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

You do have more of those than the one shop in El Paso that sells them. They have about ten. They also offer three different T-shirts and four records. There's one lone sales (?) person staring intensely at a turntable. I have no idea how they stay in business.

i actually have one of the figures in that series, of a girl tied up, meant to be posed face down. a friend of mine got it for me on vacation in japan.

the only other toy i have is a lois lane "classic silver age" figure, which I have no excuses for other than that I love lois lane.

ian, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 15:00 (seventeen years ago)

i emailed someone at presspop gallery to see if they are ever going to reissue woodring's lifesize pupshaw toy... and she said they were indeed planning on it, but not for a year or so. sweet!

and the mr. bumper toy he did is really cool... you can find them on eBay for fairly cheap (compared to the original selling price) if you're patient and don't buy the first one you see.

ytth, Wednesday, 23 April 2008 03:30 (seventeen years ago)

I saw a bunch of these things in Newbury Comics the other day and I do have to admit they're about a bazillion times more intersting in person than in pictures.

Given the price tags on them, I'm even more o_O about John's display case.
