Flying to Cancun for the cheap airfare but do not want to spend one minute in Cancun itself. Plz recommend stuff to do in terms of Yucatan, Mayan ruins, culture, food, music, sights, etc., preferably not involving fat old nudists.

Well then I have no suggestions.

1. The ruins at Tulum.
2. The souvenir shops in Playa del Carmen.
3. The Xcaret eco-park (fun with the family but might be kinda boring solo).

two months pass...
Well, I leave tomorrow. Wish me luck

Night of April 2 - Cancun (Spring Break 2007 WOO! Etc.)
April 3-5 - get the fuck out of Cancun as fast as possible, drive to Tulum, stay in beach cabana, check out ruins, possibly drive down to Sian Kaan, etc.
April 6 - Valladolid/Chichen Itza ruins
April 7/8 - Merida. Easter pageant awesomeness.
April 9 (night) stay in Cancun again for convenience of airport
April 10 (morning) fly home

hopefully swim in a cenote somewhere along the way

Home again. Visited numerous cenotes, stayed in a quiet beach inn in Tulum, ate way too much cochinita pibil, spoke lots of Spanish, almost fell down the Coba pyramid, had awesome Mayan guide at Chichen Itza, spent several hours hanging out with a couple of students from University of Yucatan, one of whom had come straight from a tiny, remote Mayan village two years ago without knowing a word of Spanish, saw good contemporary Mexican art and Spanish colonial architecture, bought a "Bobsponge" pinata in a teeming Merida marketplace and saw lots of awesome animal parts and organs.

I'm not a big water person so the Riviera Maya wasn't all that exciting for me, but it was still relaxing, and I completely fell in love with Merida.

Oh yeah also boated around a bird island in Sian Kaan and observed ibises, blue herons, egrets, frigates and others in their environs.

I hope to go to Chiapas and Oaxaca next, now that I have a friend in Palenque.

The stores are all from Tulum. Other stuff so far is Merida - highly recommended city.
