Who is the most important living intellectual?

Who do you reckon is the most important living intellectual? I am going to make the case for Joseph Stiglitz. There are many critics of neo-liberal economics, but Stigger is a brainy economist and former head of the IBRD, so he actually knows what he is talking about. As neo-liberalism runs the world, but not very well, and sustained critique of it represents an emerging dominant intellectual paradigm. Thus I salute Joseph Stiglitz.

As against that - I had never heard of him a year ago, so maybe he is not that important.

"important intellectual" is kind of an oxymoron, no? I think we've moved on to "important marketing expert."

Why fraud? And who do you reckon is important, living and intellectual?

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

i think he's a cheerful stalinist.

i don't know, anyway, i don't think it's an age for master-thinkers, if it ever was, for people who can tie the various specialisms together. partly because the specialisms are so specialized now. but please, you can do better than yet another academic marxist!

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm not sure what you'll make of him - I gave Zizek props because he seems to be name dropped so much, and also I liked the spirit of opposition he displayed at the ICA last year.

i dunno -- not read him. i don't know that there could be consensus on who the 'most important' dead intelelctuals are, tbqh -- at least from the last half-century or so.
