Will a DVD ordered from the UK play on a standard North American DVD player?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

No. Region 2 disc, Region 1 player.

Unless it's a Region 0 disc (and even then it'll be PAL and your player/TV will be NTSC, probably)

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

(oh, Region 0 = not region coded, like some music discs)

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

damn. thanks.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

How do I shot Louis Theroux (beyond YouTube)?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

You should be able to watch it on your PC though - all you need is a tool that gets rid of the region coding (like anyDVD, for instance).

Other than that, get someone to copy theirs without the region coding?
Get a region free player?

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Of course! I knew I didn't spend $1200 on this thing just so I could ILX! Thanks.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

region free players are not all that uncommon. i think you can even get one at target.

Region code hack posted by Danny, March 29 2005:

I got a Philips dvp642 at Target today 3-28 in the smaller white box. Got home and tryed the opening the tray and type 7-8-9 ok then 0 and it worked!!!! To know if you did it right do it again and press 2 instead of 0 then try and play a region 1 dvd in it. Wrong Region came up on the screen! HAAAA WOW this has got to be the easiest hack ever, Nice dvd player to.

‘•’u (gear), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

you can use a putty knife to scrape off the region coding if you're really careful.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

Some players have the option to go to "Universal Play." My g/f ordered a few BBC items (Region 2), we set her player to Region 0 in the options menu, and they all play fine now.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

The PAL/NTSC thing isn't a problem anymore?

StanM (StanM), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

nah most tvs/dvds can do both

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Sunday, 7 January 2007 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

many region 1 dvds won't play on region free dvd players with the hacking code in effect, so it would have to be switched back.

i keep a region free player for only a small number of dvds which are not available domestically. i've got this apex from 2000 which is a pretty shitty player overall, but it has the code. i'm going to get a new one sooner or later.

There are a couple options, that most have already pointed out. 1) play it in your computah, 2) if you have a DVD burner on yr computer, rip the disc to an ISO file with DVD Shrink and make a copy with ImgBurn (however, your DVD player may not be able to play DVRs), or 3) get a region free DVD player (DVDTalk.com has good International and Hardware forums where you can find out what's currently available).

There are plenty of widely available DVD players in the US that will handle multiple region codes and do seamless PAL-conversion. Toshiba and Philips are good in this area. Try to avoid the cheapos like Cyberhome and Coby. Yeah you'll be region-free but yr player may not work a year down the road.

I've had a Toshiba SD-4900 for years, the hack is widely available, though if I had to buy today I'd probably for one of the newer models that can also play DivX discs.

Careful use of torrent sites and emule has got me all the Louis Theroux episodes out there, as well as a couple that have never been released on dvd.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 8 January 2007 00:26 (nineteen years ago)

I think most philips dvd players are easily converted to region free and I've never had a problem playing any region dvds in mine; it's not the most feature-packed or greatest dvd player ever, probably, but it only cost $80.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

just google for a hack.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

I've never had a problem finding a hack for any DVD player though. Type HACK SONY ZR233-B (or whatever) and it should come up with something.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

There are plenty of unhackable DVD players, especially from Sony. My Toshiba SD2600 was unhackable.

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 8 January 2007 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

There are quite a few also that can be made region-free but won't suppport PAL conversion.

Edward III (edward iii), Monday, 8 January 2007 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
Yesterday, a friend let me borrow a DVD...I tried watching it on my Sony DVD player only to receive an error message (playback prohibited by area limitations). So, I put the disc in my computer, which read it as a blank DVD. Then I tried playing it on my friend's Mac, and it worked.

After doing some quick research, I've figured out that it has to do with regions (and the film happens to be from Europe)...I went into my control panel and saw that the computer's Phillips DVD player allows you to change the region code 5 times but no more...I figured that I might as well try changing it once, but afterwards, it still thought it was a blank DVD. How can I get this to work without buying another DVD player?

Has anyone tried this method? http://www.dvddemystifiziert.de/codefree_en/sony.html

Play it with VLC.

"most tvs/dvds can do both"???

am i right in thinking that ZERO of the normal, non-flat-screen tvs can do both?

Tracer Hand, Monday, 12 March 2007 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

Tracer, my normal, non-flat, 8-y-o, 21-inch Panasonic TV can do PAL/NTSC playback.

Michael Jones, Monday, 12 March 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)

So can mine of similar vintage. I think if you have an option to switch to RGB input then you're OK.

As for Tape Store's question - I haven't tried the PS2 hack, but generally these DVD region unlocking things work OK - I did my Philips using the remote key-pressing procedure I found online.

Great site for hacks: dvd.reviewer.co.uk (although this may just be for Brit models). Worst comes to *absolute* worst, tmpgenc can convert between formats. It takes a while, though (~1x on a dual core 2.8GHz machine) and output can be jittery.
