Is that Tom Wolfe, fiddling while the Landmarks Preservation Commission overdevelops Rome?

The Redd And The Blecch (Ken L), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

The netherworld of people like this, Bocelli and the like in the context of an American audience would make a good EMP paper. I am not going to write it.

Classique!

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

I can't remember. When he has his poncey concerts in period costume, does he, as the conductor, dress up as well? That almost falls into so bad it's Classic territory.

jeuh, vogeltjesdans!

poopsloop (poopsloop), Monday, 8 January 2007 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

Let him be, he's doing a very useful job in keeping a dangerous demographic off the streets.

StanM (StanM), Monday, 8 January 2007 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 8 January 2007 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

he only plays waltzes, what is that?

nazi bikini (harbl), Monday, 8 January 2007 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

also my little brother plays violin and sometimes his friends try to know about classical and they go "oh, you know that guy, andre rieu? he's cool!" he gets mad.

nazi bikini (harbl), Monday, 8 January 2007 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

he needs to get together with michael flatley and/or the elven drums folks.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 8 January 2007 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

he's proof europeans are no less tacky than americans

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 8 January 2007 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

if i want pbs to not air this shit every other day, do i have to give them money, or not give them money? so confusing

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 8 January 2007 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

The strategy is to somehow get rid of his audience, so PBS will stop airing his shows, but killing all the old women in a whole country is probably illegal, so the next best thing would be to find a way to change their attitude from "why can't my daughter find a nice young man like this, who plays waltzes and looks like he never farted in his whole life?" to "that creep again! thank god my daughter is married to homer simpson!" How you're going to do that is up to you, comrade (we're trying over here in Europe as well). Good luck!

six years pass...

Sky Arts have a channel dedicated to this douche right now

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Thursday, 11 April 2013 21:24 (twelve years ago)

I had to shift so many copies of his albums when I worked at Amazon over Christmas. I genuinely grew to loathe his perpetually smirking face and the people who were giving him their money.

Pheeel, Friday, 12 April 2013 02:13 (twelve years ago)

I've watched a few of his shows recently, got drawn in by the strangeness of them I guess. The audience shots are always amazing, all these middle aged mainland euros who just LOVE every second of it. Thing is, he's totally playing to the Classic FM crowd, but I don't think he reduces it to the lowest common denominator anywhere near as much as he could do, his choice of material does tend to be just a bit less obvious than you'd expect. Like he does maybe want to educate his audience a bit, and encourage a broadening of their awareness.

This seems to have been going on forever (probably just since last weekend or something). Seriously, you guys, they've renamed Sky Arts 2 "Sky Arts Rieu".
