The misery of cedar fever and other seasonal allergies

I'm freaking dying here in Austin. The cedar pollen is astronomical today and I just returned from a mtg on the other side of campus. This is not a long walk for normal people but I seriously thought I was going to collapse or have to go home by the time I returned to my office.

My symptoms are of the breathing kind. Allergies activate my asthma, my lungs seize up and I cough so much people around me probably think I have TB. Right now I feel like I'm going to puke and my hands are trembling from all the puffs I've taken on my inahler.

On Fri. doctor gave me a course of predinose to reign in my asthma, a new steriod inhaler, a new allergy pill and a course of antibiotics. Since then I've been able to sleep through the night without waking up suffocated, but anytime I have to walk outside with this pollen, I really think I'm going to die.

Weather people advise that people like me stay indoors. But this hard when you have a busy job and bus commutes.

:( Please share my not-breathing, wishing-to-die misery.

Sounds miserable. Is it normal for cedar pollen to be out so intensely this time of year? (I'm very interested in what's out when in different parts of the country, since I'm probably going to relocate in the next couple years thanks to allergies. I've sort of ruled out Texas though, since I don't think most of Texas would be good for mold allergies.)

Cedar pollen starts late Nov/early Dec and goes through March or so. (but it's only in central texas really) I know people who have had to leave Austin b/c it affects them so bad. I hope that doesn't become my fate.

My boyfriend has suggested a mask when I'm outdoors. ugh. People already look at me like I'm an asshole while I'm coughing my head off. They'd probably clear a path around me if I walked around looking like I had SARs. Still, he's probably right.

Try having allergies that normally go away in November stick around into January.
This weather is fucked - I fucking wish it was snowy. Fuck.
There's a litany of people I blame for the circumstances leading to this and no sensible release for my pissed-off-ness.

Like I said, I've pretty much decided I have to completely move to a different climate. In a way, it's good. It gives me an excuse to start are, in some sense, which I need to do. I almost thing I have grown into the sort of crusty scorpionic creature that belongs out in the desert anyway. First I will move to Abq., then I will move a little further out from the city, then I will live under a rock in the middle of nowhere.

I would like to share that I've been wearing a mask when I'm outdoors for three days now. It's a night and day difference in my breathing ability. I highly recommend this to all you allergy/asthma sufferers.

one year passes...

A mask, eh? Worth a shot, I guess.

I actually spent the day home in bed because of cedar season.
