I had seen McGinley's work before but didn't know about Colen and the whole Dash Snow mythology. I like McGinley's photography a lot. But the whole thing about the rich kid from an art-world family writing graf, shoplifting, doing time in juvie, well that's just the oldest, tritest rich kid story in the book, not to mention that the guy seems painfully un-self-aware (see the moment where's he's caught lying about his relationship with his parents, claiming they "cut him off" -- another classic rebelious rich kid cliche.)

I knew a few guys a bit like this who were in art school at Rutgers when I was there (ex-skaters from NJ as well) - all about naked drug parties that involved animal noises and household percussion and throwing stuff on the floor. I'd rather know them than be them.

Naked drug parties sounds fine to me. I wish them all the best of luck.

McGinley flew around Europe last year photographing Morrissey's tour. I'd love to see those photos.

No, not going for that kind of outright dismissiveness. Fuck off, please.

While I'd probably like some of the stuff these guys do and find their stories somewhat interesting, I really have to wonder if a good part of the novelty comes from the fact that they're worming into an art culture where a guy who parties a lot, has poor hygiene, and acts erratically is somewhat novel. If so, I kind of wish a lot of people I know were more entrepreneurial.

art market has been long overdue for a correction. when it hits a lot of galleries who have never experienced lean times will shutter, and quite a few middling artists will get culled. but these guys, these networker dilettantes acting out bad 4th generation white boy Basquiat fantasies, these dudes will get hit the hardest.

omg everyone is middle class

I still think McGinley's work is genuinely good.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

Bungee - I am definitely mocking them a bit, but I'm not just saying "WTF ROFFLE IDIOTS!" - I think they're something to talk about. The whole craze for "OOF THIS THREAD!" posts is getting a little out of hand lately - are we too cool to discus?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just waiting for something worth discussing. Your original post boils down to:

i didn't know about snow, but i like his friend's work. snow seems trite just like choe. i knew guys like them and i don't care for them. i started this thread for no reason when i could've bumped that choe thread.

I'd love to see those photos.

He has a show on now!

I think the David Choe thread was on the sandbox.

What are you waiting for? No one asked you to post on this thread.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, that was my point. It was boring on the sandbox too, even with vahid's capt-save-a-choe. But, now we have this thread on nuilx so we can just bump this any time some puff piece about a social butterfly is deemed worthy of even more attention.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

Since when is ILX above snarking at puff pieces?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

McGinley is is 50% Terry Richardson and 50% Blue States Lose. Do not want.

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

mcginley is pretty cute though

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't previously know Terry Richardson, but from a little web searching, I think that's unfair to McGinley.

They are all rather handsome, I must admit.
