I sense disconnect. (I actually like Grossmith a lot based on what little I know of him.)

Love it. Grossmith (George) is interestingly portrayed in Topsy Turvey.

To the original poster: You've expressed yourself wonderfully well and are quite a philosopher.

Ooh golly, we were read this in class when I was 11 or 12! I recall it being pretty amusing, with the narrator's 'jokes' (and subsequent self-regard) possessing a particularly (as I now realise) Gervais-like quality. Yeah, Ricky, your entire act's approximately 100 years out of date.

Of course, the finest Victorian comic novel ever written is Three Men In A Boat, which for me is the absolute pinnacle of written humour. Every single word of it, every single microcosm of its world is completely, utterly, hilariously true.

10 January 1892:

I went downtown to Uptown Records innit. Flabbergasted by the fact that they only had one copy of the limited-edition-of-one new Ghostbox memory stick. Wicked duck beats reminiscent of the fifth side of Gentle Giant's underrated seventh album Gryphon Giblets!
