Blender - food for the toothless

So I've invested in a blender. So far I've used it to crush ice, but I'll be shopping for blendable foods tonight.

I'm looking forward to chucking in peppers and tomatoes to make soup, and I'm sure I'll be able to invent some tasty cocktails.

What do you blend in yours?

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ice hockey pucks, golf balls, beer bottles, ipods...

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:05 (eighteen years ago)

Soup and more soup. Made a curried parsnip and apple on Monday, yum yum and super-filling. Also pancake mix, cos I'm lazy and can't be arsed to stir. Oooh, and make friends with smoothies.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

I use mine to make fruit smoothies and ice-cream milkshakes, velvety-smooth soups (carrot, onion, potato and coriander with a dash of cream is the favourite at the moment), and lovely dips (such as guacamole, or a butter bean/olive oil/coriander concoction).

thought this was about the magazine for a second, lol

latebloomer da nutty tarkovsky (latebloomer), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yes, and another vote here for making pancake batter in it. Lump free, hurrah!

C J (C J), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

so you can just make soup by blending a ruck of veg, and then what? you just heat that up in a pan or something?

do you need to add stock or something?

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

soup made just by blending a ruck of veg tends to be raw soup like gazpacho, I think? Most smooth veg soups I know go into the blender after they've been boiled up for a bit, and then back into the pan after blending.

'ruck' is a new word for me, I like it!

ampersand, spades, semicolon (cis), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

1) heat up some oil or butter.
2) if you want, put stuff in the oil (coriander seeds, cumin seeds, garlic, whatever)
3) Brown a chopped onion.
4) Add some veg.
5) Add some stock
6) Leave simmering till the veg is cooked.
7) BLITZ!

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:27 (eighteen years ago)

cheers!

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

Do you use yoghurt or milk in your smoothies CJ?

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

I make smoothies with'em. Use milk and also yoghurt, but mostly milk.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

Yum, I'm looking forward to it. Mixed berry smoothies.....

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

Lovely, I'm now looking forward to sweet potato and pepper soup followed by a blueberry smoothie. Yum.

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

I make smoothies with mostly milk, but also a big dollop of yogurt.

Milk + yogurt + crushed ice + bananas + cinnamon + clear runny honey + tablespoon of wheatgerm for a breakfast smoothie.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

my blender is used for margaritas. the end.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

Mmmm, frozen margarita. Scrumptious.

The crushed ice went well with my Glayva, I'll certainly be doing that again.

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

OMG at CJs smoothie! I'm having that.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

The wheatgerm will give you a glossy coat :~)

Rumpsy Pumpsy (Rumpie), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yay! I got a blender for Christmas and have been making soup.

This is a Delia Smith recipe, but I got bored with peeling potatos and I thought I'd save the second leek for another day. It was pretty damn good and goes something like this:

1) Melt 50g of butter in a large pan.
2) Add 500g diced spuds, along with 1 medium to large onion and 1 enormous leek, both to be finely sliced. Season with salt and pepperr and then sweat with lid on for 20 minutes or so.
3) Add 1 medium can (400g approx) of drained cannellini beans.
4) Pour in vegetable stock to an inch or so above the veggies (apologies for mixing imperial with metric.)
5) Simmer together for another 20 minutes or so.
6) Blitz.
7) Return to pan with 200-250 ml of double cream and reheat.

I also made a batch of squash and sweetcorn soup which was far too sweet but I bough another butternut squash today, so can anyone reccomend a better way for me to soup it. Maybe substituting potatos or beans for the sweetcorn and then currying the lot?

I also attempted to make those fried breadcrumbed (made with blender) jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese. But I had to bake them, rather than deep-fry. The ton of fat was missed, but they weren't so bad after all.

Wingwalker (1977), Thursday, 11 January 2007 05:20 (eighteen years ago)

Lump free? Can I stick my wrist in it?

I've had a blender for about a year now - it was a housewarming gift, and honestly, it's never been out of the box. I've been trying to give it away, but can't even do that. It currently functions as a coffee table for resting my laptop on when I watch DVDs.

I cannot honestly think of a use for the thing that would justfy giving up the counter space.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Thursday, 11 January 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

What kind of blender is it, kate?

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Thursday, 11 January 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

You Are What You Eat brand blender. Which may explain why I don't want to take it out of the box - I fear it will examine my poo, with a bullying Scots accent.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Thursday, 11 January 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'll take it off your hands, I'll swap it for that autoharp!

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Thursday, 11 January 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

I think I did at one point promise to give it to one of my former bandmates but 1) I cannot remember who. And 2) they never took it away.

A non functioning autoharp that you said you would give me for a pittance is a poor swap for a functioning, and indeed never out of its packaging blender!

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Thursday, 11 January 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'll throw in a free DDB. Or a cake. Or a DDB cake!

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Thursday, 11 January 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure I'd want to know what a DDB cake is.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Thursday, 11 January 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

It has "special" icing on it.

I HAZ A BLENDAR

but now I don't know what to do with it. Just chucked in an orange (in bits) and some strawberries and some sugar and some ice and blendededed it all into a pinkish drab and it tastes a bit like orange with strawberry and sugar. Is this it?

StanM, Saturday, 6 June 2009 09:34 (sixteen years ago)

yoghurt + ice + fruit = smoothie

banana works well as a base

Jarlrmai, Saturday, 6 June 2009 10:28 (sixteen years ago)

Thx!

StanM, Saturday, 6 June 2009 10:56 (sixteen years ago)

one month passes...

I HAZ ANODAR BLENDAR since the first one broek :-(

You suck, Krups blender Power XL6 Duo. Your fiddly toy-like tiny plastic lever that checks whether the beaker is there before it allows blendering DOES NOT WORK and I had to push
the back/bottom of the beaker during the whole blendering operation before I THREW YOUR RIDICULOUS ASS AWAY. Farewell, Krups.

You rule, KitchenAid PowerBlender 5KSB52E. And you're the same color as my car. So you rule x 2.

Tonite: Mango + 2 oranges + some raspberries = not as liquid as I expected (think pumpkin soup) but taste = A+++

StanM, Tuesday, 21 July 2009 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

mmm, I'm getting buried in blueberries from my parents' place while they're in Idaho...maybe I'll make blueberry milkshakes tonight.

Blenders make me more likely to buy high-risk fruit - if the peach is mealy, just toss it in!

any tips on using a blender to make hummus or pesto? I tried both but wasn't very successful. in the first case I just dumped everything in and then the blade just kinda whirred and mashed everything up in its immediate vicinity but everything around it stayed solid and immoveable. for the second, I made sure to keep it liquidy at first by only adding the olive oil and basil, but the leaves just gathered on the sides of the pitcher without getting blended.

I think part of the problem is that the width of my pitcher is pretty big compared to the size of the blades..

I can't turn my face into a shart (dyao), Sunday, 17 January 2010 06:21 (fifteen years ago)

probably not helpful but it's def. easier to make pesto in a food processor (wide bowl, wide blade).

You could try shredding the basil first, maybe? Add it first and pulse it a few times, get it minced up a bit, then add the oil and pulse more and more til you can get them moving together...I think if you rely on the blender's blade to do all the basil chopping it won't work quite as well.

I'm only guessing though...

VegemiteGrrrl, Sunday, 17 January 2010 08:18 (fifteen years ago)

nah i have that problem with my blender, i think it's true of all blenders that the pitcher is huge compared to blades. you are probably just not using enough liquid. i make hummus in the blender pretty frequently. you need to use some of the water from cooking the chick peas. or if you used cans just use tap water.

harbl, Monday, 18 January 2010 04:16 (fifteen years ago)

and mash stuff down to get it started, once it catches it'll work

harbl, Monday, 18 January 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

all these sound like good suggestions. will try after I finish this batch of okay, somewhat-tasty hummus.

cogito, ergo some dude (dyao), Monday, 18 January 2010 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

This was my quick breakfast every day throughout most of high school, makes a good meal substitute as well:
1 egg, 1-2 cups milk, banana, cinnamon, sugar/sweetener. You can add other fruits in there if you want too.

Anyone care to rec a blender? Hoping to get one for $50-ish. Looking @ ninja which I have used but not owned. Consumer reports really likes 'em. don't expect to chop ice,but may use fzn fruit for smoothies.

budo jeru, Thursday, 9 March 2023 15:37 (two years ago)

we have a vitamix, my wife has fucked two jugs with her giant lumps of rock crystal sugar, but they send us replacements without asking any questions

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Thursday, 9 March 2023 15:48 (two years ago)

ha, i do covet the legendary vitamix! think tho i'm probably in the market for something under 100 USD if possible

budo jeru, Thursday, 9 March 2023 15:53 (two years ago)

still rep for the Ninja. near vitamix quality at a much lower price point. ended up getting a hamilton beach one that was like $40 and i liked a lot but don't have anymore bcuz i broke the glass jug and when i moved i just let the base go. these days have just been using a braun stick blender that's worked for my needs

Half Japanese Breakfast (outdoor_miner), Thursday, 9 March 2023 15:58 (two years ago)

I've been living smoothie life for the first time, with a Ninja. The blender seems to work great. Standard recipe so far is avocado, banana, frozen blueberries (just realized I forgot those this morning, oops), some protein powder, a little cocoa powder, lots of salt (key!!!), a little agave syrup, some coconut milk or yogurt, maybe some hemp hearts.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 9 March 2023 16:02 (two years ago)

great sounding combo
