Do the terms and style of writing you use on the boards ever cross over to real life?

New Mark H (New MarkH), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:52 (eighteen years ago)

thankfully this has never happened in any instance which was business-critical. I did finish an email via our IT helpdesk with "kthxbye" on one occasion tho.

New Mark H (New MarkH), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

if i said that particular phrase at all i'd have to consider suicide

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

come on! (uh, i mean, not "consider suicide" but not using the phrase)

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

there's an old thread like this in which people delight in the introduction of 'cockfarmer' to their boardroom meetings or something.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

there are a million threads on this!

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:58 (eighteen years ago)

I don't believe you.

New Mark H (New MarkH), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

of course cockfarmer is delightful to say and i like to do so frequently

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

kthxbye

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

Not so much ilx-specific as general internets-speak, but I now pronounce 'seriously' as 'srsly'.

ampersand, spades, semicolon (cis), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

I used 'prolly' in a work email and was immediately brought to book.

New Mark H (New MarkH), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:01 (eighteen years ago)

Given that my real life involves, er, emailing the Vicar and Rener and A Farrell and similar others, there is no crossover. Merely an extension.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

but I now pronounce 'seriously' as 'srsly'.

also 'what' is now always 'WAAAAAHT'

reverto levidensis (blueski), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

I sometimes use "urgent and key" and "don't try it" but that's it.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:03 (eighteen years ago)

lololol srsly i do not talk funneh

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

I borrowed "WAAAAAAAAAHT?" from Bob Dylan.

I say "LOL" irl. And "urgent and key" all the time. Oh, and "x in y shokah" constantly.

My speaking tone is EXACTLY THE SAME as my writing tone. (at least i want it to be. Is it?)

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

I remain amused by phrases people think are ILX ones but are just innernet-casual all over the place. kthxbye is good example.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

my mother-in-law has a friend named Randy, a big butterball goof of a guy. I amused myself one visit by calling him "the Amazing" but nobody got it. when he came over it was I could do not to yell:

HI DERE

m coleman (lovebug starski), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

it's just coz I don't visit other bits of the internet, Trayce.

New Mark H (New MarkH), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

oh really?

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

I remain amused by phrases people think are ILX ones but are just innernet-casual all over the place.

So true.

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

Tragically, I say "hi dere" all the time. And my girlfriend has picked it up from me.

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

I went to the rest of the internet once. I was mugged.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

i blame the noise board for my constant use of the phrase "lol fags"!!11!1!!!!

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

i would love to be able to say that to my workmates

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

Tragically, I say "hi dere" all the time.

So do I :( Im sure I have said HI DERE to people too much.

But hey, I am apparently a "bad comedy enabler", so fuck you very much people who said this who don't even know me etc.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

us bad comedy types appreciate

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

I walk around with a little smiley emote drawn on a post-it note stuck to my forehead.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

Bad Comedy Enabler is such a very witty phrase! Rofflol.

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

bad comedy enabler, like Jimmy Carr?

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

fuck knows

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

I have almost used OTM accidentally.

In my quest to find out if this is an ILX thing, I found this encouraging confirmation :

For the record, OTM is a favored abbreviation of I Love Music, a forum Pitchfork correctly (for once) describes as a "music critic circle jerk." It's short for "on the money," or "on the mark," something like that. If you really want to feel some self-loathing, check out ilxor.com.

we have a fan!

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

Best thing is, he's totally OTM.

teh_kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

hows that self loathing feelin?

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

To be honest, there isn't nearly enough self-loathing in the world.

Johnney B English (stigoftdump), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, well, Pitchfork.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm always telling people at work about the Chickenbear.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

I use "urgent + key" and "hi dere" a lot. That Amazing Randy story is awesome.
