At first glance, you see George Washington saluting the troops of past and present wars. Every man and woman who has served our country to preserve freedom is to be honored. A few are pictured to represent them all. From left to right the soldiers represent a Vietnam Veteran, a Korean War Nurse, a soldier in Iraq/Afghanistan, a Persian Gulf Veteran, a living Vietnam Veteran, a Continental soldier, a Union Civil War soldier, a World War I Veteran, a Confederate Civil War soldier, a Vietnamese woman and baby, a World War II Veteran. As a court would review the evidence and reach a verdict, these troops are being honored for their service to our country. (Notice the word HONOR in the sidewalk.) On further inspection we find the real key to this painting. It is the Lord (in the upper right corner) who is truly “reviewing the troops”. We are to be counted as good soldiers of Jesus Christ. He is reviewing our lives. The ultimate question is do I recognize and trust him? The little girl is leaving a note at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Wall. What do you think she is writing?

I would have beautiful symbolism with all this inspring paintings.

(ok, is it time to retire that one?)

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm reading the presence of the Vietnamese woman and baby in the second one as a nice gesture, but (a) something about it seems logically confused, and (b) I'm just generally suspicious here.

From the Artist: "I am a self taught artist. I was lucky enough to capture a photo of my dog darting out from under the American Flag during that unforgettable time. Precious is a Shih-Tzu, she has a lot of personality and this photo made a perfect subject for a painting. Actually the photo was used in the 'Tribute to American Spirit' Photoquilt on AOL."

I think it's just standard imperialist rhetoric. savin' foreign women from foreign men.

Shih-Tzu? Don't sound like no American dawg to me.

Clothing the Gotterdammerung Doors (noodle vague), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, horseshoe, that's one of the 8 million things confusing me about it. Like I want to read it as the banal symbolism of woman + child = "innocent civilians," but then she's with soldiers, as if fighting on our side (wanting to represent the south??), and ... it's just totally symbolically jumbled, and I get the feeling you're totally right.

Haha, yes, both the Union and the Confederacy "served our country to preserve freedom" -- it's just that Mr. Furley mixed up some phone messages and started this whole big misunderstanding.

OMG talk about jumbled symbolism: I have absolutely no idea what that space one means! Unless it's like "our patriotic symbolism will one day expand to conquer the entirety of the universe and we will carve distant planets into busts of Ronald Reagan kthnxbye."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

"our patriotic symbolism will one day expand to conquer the entirety of the universe and we will carve distant planets into busts of Ronald Reagan kthnxbye."

that seems about right. I like that one because it seems ambivalent about that future. like, it registers how kind of shitty and bleak it is.

i think thats jesus all the way over to the left.

jambalaya backgammon (grady), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

I may be going crazy, but what I'm seeing is Bush in a straightjacket, Sharon prepping a crown of thorns, and the heads of Arafat, bin Laden, and two others on the table. Plus oil, a globe, and 9/11. It's such a clusterfuck of religion/political metaphor that I have no idea where to even start on it.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

that would make sense, except it makes Bush and Sharon look really sinister, which is not how I assume the painter intended them to look? though, who knows. but really, Osama bin Laden looks nothing like any of those...heads. ugh.

I just started typing a list of theoretical morals to that WTF one, but they were all so jacked up I couldn't even type them in jest. That really does look like a crown of thorns in Sharon's hands, which combines with the straightjacket to look like some kind of blood libel. Against the Bush-Christ? But theoretically they were in agreement about the head-collecting, no? So maybe this is some kind of Buchanan-influenced pacifist thing where the Bush-Christ is being dragged into conflict by the thorn-weaving Zionists? Whoever made this should really consider writing essays instead.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

So probably the intended moral is something like "evil Zionists control US in conflict."
