When Empire Strikes Back was first released, weren't people weirded out by the "Episode V" part in the title crawl? Did anyone think he'd missed three extra episodes between the first film and this one?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:02 (nineteen years ago)

No, because the first one is entitled "Episode IV". Is this a real question?

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

it was originally titled 'episode iv'.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:11 (nineteen years ago)

sorry, i mean 'wasn't'.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

he only decided that he would unleash his grand nine-, um, i mean six-part epic, when the cashmoney came rolling in from the first one.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

The first film wasn't originally called Episode IV

onimo (onimo), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:13 (nineteen years ago)

er what Enrique said

onimo (onimo), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

I stand (or rather slump) corrected!

back in the middle ages did people sometimes think "middle of what exactly?"

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:28 (nineteen years ago)

According to Wikipedia:

When originally released in 1977, the first film was simply titled Star Wars, as Lucas was not certain if he would follow the film with a sequel. Following The Empire Strikes Back, the film was re-released in the early eighties with the subtitle 'Episode IV: A New Hope'. The very original version, without the subtitle, was not released until the 2006 limited edition DVDs. The opening crawl was re-created to not include the now familiar subtitle specially for the 2006 DVD.

Are there IlXors old enough to have seen Empire Strikes Back in the cinema? I remember when I first saw the movies in the late eighties, it was already common knowledge that there were supposed to be three prequels, but did everyone know this already at 1980?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 11 January 2007 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

i saw star wars in the cinema on first release -- i was so excited i ran all the way home!

i think the prequel info was around from very early on

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 11 January 2007 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

hmmmmm. iirc 'easy riders and raging bulls' snarks otherwise. but then it would wouldn't it.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Thursday, 11 January 2007 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

By the time Star Wars started making money they were talking about it being episode 4 of 9. I too saw Star Wars in the cinema on the original release around January '78.

onimo (onimo), Thursday, 11 January 2007 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about the 9 episodes too. Not only that, but some kids claimed the three prequels and sequels already existed, only they were extremely hard to find.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 11 January 2007 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

My question remains 'what new albums did enrique buy in 2005?'

reverto levidensis (blueski), Thursday, 11 January 2007 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

The cinema I saw Star Wars in is now a Burger King :(

i saw star wars and empire in the theaters when they were first released but don't remember any 'episode 20' bs. not that it would've mattered.

Please advise:

I work in a big room full of cubes. The chatting, whining and banter is driving me absolutely bonkers today. I've grown weary of the cds I brought, as well as lastfm. I just want to listen to something that will drown out THE WHINING.

Pandora.com?

earplugs? sound machine?

Yeah. I'm not really into the idea of listening to music right now, as I've been doing that all week to DROWN OUT CO-WORKERS. If I could have the sound of a humidifier (for example) THAT BLASTED AWAY everything else, I'd be in good form.

If only we allowed cats in the library! I'd be playing that thing all day.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

its a library?? tell them to 'SHHH!'

sunny successor agrees: gay dad always trumps slutty mom (katharine), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

See, I'm a cataloger, so we're in an old reading room that "the public" isn't allowed. We have cubes and high ceilings which helps the whining to reverberate all around.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Off them with a candle stick.

Fleischhutliebe! like a warm, furry meatloaf (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

I was thinking a wrench, and then calling myself Mrs. Peacock.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

i saw empire strikes back in the theatre. i remember being confused by the V. i think i had just figured out roman numerals though (was v young). also, i did not care because it was EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

the only thing that tunes out the whining is more whining

The Desmond Dekker and the Aces channel on last.fm is helping me out.

There's gotta be something on the internets where I can just listen to Buddhist temple bells.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

Do not try to listen to "Songs of the Humpback Whale" on last.fm

That shit's fucked up.

molly mummenschanz (mollyd), Thursday, 11 January 2007 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

I remember being really confused by the 'episode iv' thing the second time I saw star wars when it was playing on tv. I had only seen the first star wars movie at this point and I thought they had somehow made a fourth star wars movie and that I hadn't heard of and it was already playing on tv.

Also I never read the opening crawl for any of the star wars movies when I was a kid. For some reason I assumed the opening crawl would just explain what would happen in the movie (I guess I assumed it was for people who didn't want to bother sitting through the whole movie but still wanted to know what happened). I'm not sure how I arrived at this conclusion, but I'm pretty sure I thought this until I was about 9 or 10.

peter in montreal (spaces are allowed), Thursday, 11 January 2007 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

which cinema was that, onimo?

the burger king I bought six cheeseburgers in is now unoccupied

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 11 January 2007 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

Stupid question (that I probably don't want to know the answer to):

You know how there are always little puddles of liquid underneath urinals in public bathrooms? Is that what I hope it isn't?

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 11 January 2007 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Mostly, yes.

eleven years pass...

have any of you ever attended a masquerade ball where the identity the other people really is a secret, like the gatherings featured in Eyes Wide Shut or the recent hit game starring a man, Hitman 2?
