Into the New Year with exciting Poptimism news. Now the favoured children of The Union Tavern after a storming bit of New Year action, you can now bung Poptimism in your diaries for the next six months or so: and its as easy as finding the FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH: and coming and spending yr freshly minted wages. And Dancing. Did we say Dancing?

Anyway, in February, February 2nd to be precise, we are saying PUT YOUR HANDS UP FOR THE NEW WORLD, with not one, but two American DJ’s. Debutante Poptimism DJ’s (in more ways that one) Colette, Queen of the Dancefloor, and Elisha “Tracer Hand” Sessions play a Flock of Seagulls all night cos that’s what they think we Brits like.

Plus regular DJ’s The Barnet Ape and Carsmile Steve. 7pm til midnight. What will the neighbours say?

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 11 January 2007 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

I am (hopefully!) going to come to this for an hour or two at least - it will be exciting experiencing Poptimism as a punter!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 11 January 2007 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe I left "Here Comes the Night" back in Tennessee.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Thursday, 11 January 2007 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

I am sure the Poptimism SHADOWY CABAL will be able to furnish you with a copy (WARNING: SOME TRACKS HAVE BEEN RE-RECORDED BY MEMBERS OF THE ORIGINAL ACT FOR ENHANCED SOUND QUALITY).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

I would love to come to this but my friend is getting married the next day so I'll have to be good and give it a miss. Have fun everyone.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 January 2007 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

People used to have their stag dos the night before the wedding you know.

It has come to my attention (due to her telling me), that this Poptimism will also be graced by Accentmonkey! And possibly Mister Monkey as well. Yaaaay! (in a Kermit stylee)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 11 January 2007 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
is this the shortest poptimism thread ever?

i'm really excited, in any case. and nervous, too! but mostly excited...

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 1 February 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think this is quite a short thread b'coz EVERYONE IS COMING - ain't that right TEHKIDS!

I, for one, am looking forward immensely for tonight. I have new pants on.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 2 February 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

This is the thread, that the pinefox couldn't see.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 February 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

Are these new pulling pants, pete. Should we lock up our daughters?

Ed (dali), Friday, 2 February 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

I heard that Pete will be dancing and DJing in just his new pants this evening.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

I demand a press conference on Pete's new pants there are facts that need to be cleared up.

Ed (dali), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

Dear Person wavering on whether to come to Poptimism or not,

please come to Poptimism, it's fun and it's free, and you won't have to have anything to do with Pete's pants (old or new, in need of clearing up or otherwise, pulling or pushing) unless you want to.

Yrs,

Tim

Tim (Tim), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

This is pants in the English sense so unless I and some young fillie get lucky, no-one will be seeing them.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

Why say "young fillie"? - Fillies are by their nature *young* as they are female horses under four years of age.

Will there be horses on the dance floor? Can I bring a DOG?!?!?

Ed (dali), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:15 (eighteen years ago)

This is pants in the English sense so unless I and some young fillie get lucky, no-one will be seeing them

Maybe Louis J will show up

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

I want the ginger dog lover. I'm sure he would put up with me if he's used to that. Arf!

I Am Totally Radioactive! (kate), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

when you have freed him of his trousers, send them my way.

Ed (dali), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

I think this is quite a short thread b'coz EVERYONE IS COMING - ain't that right TEHKIDS!

Not me. I'm in a fucking foul mood today so there's no point. Have fun though, everyone else.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

Ed, I keep getting catalogues of hunting clothes with appropriate plus fours in them put in with my Country Lifes. Or at least, I did back in the autumn as was the season. Next time I get one, I shall pass them on.

I Am Totally Radioactive! (kate), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Can I bring a DOG?!?!?

DOG DOG DOG DOG DOG DOG DOG DOG DOG

a nuclear-powered carrot (braveclub), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

bring your own bitches

vita susicivus (blueski), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

and bring your own britches

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

This is pants in the English sense

but isn't this supposed to be american edition? maybe you should wear your your new pants outside your 'pants' in honor of the occasion?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

Superpete

Tom (Groke), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

but then he'd technically be commando ew

vita susicivus (blueski), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

did Superman also wear inside undies?

vita susicivus (blueski), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

I have always assumed there has been built in "netting" like wot you have in "short shorts".

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

but who wears those?

vita susicivus (blueski), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

No. It's like a swimsuit I think. With pants outside.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 2 February 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

I think Supermans pants on the outside are part of the trousers, like those jersey/polo shirt combos you get in River Island where the polo shirt is already stitched in (and i have always hated because it is in essence fashion lying to people about howmany layers you are actually wearing).

However considering the possible destructive power of his "little man of steel" perhaps the extra layer is for reinforcement.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 2 February 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

Pete is surely right, as you don't see the Parasite or Lex Luthor attempting to give Superman a wedgie.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 2 February 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

But might we see Lex Macpherson attempting to give Pete a wedgie?

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 2 February 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)

At the end of the day it's poor Lois has to deal with Superman's soiled spandex, so that is where my sympathies lie.

Anyway, this disco then...

vita susicivus (blueski), Friday, 2 February 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

i wd be very surprised if the lex knew what a wedgie was

mark s (mark s), Friday, 2 February 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

also superman

Ed (dali), Friday, 2 February 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

please play Laurie Anderson early doors k thx

vita susicivus (blueski), Friday, 2 February 2007 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

Black Lace surely?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 2 February 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

Inspired by Pete's sartorial novelty (and a wardrobe in dire need of refreshing) I have just been to purchase, and will be sporting, new pants *and* shirt.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 2 February 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

This is pants in the American sense.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

Black Lace surely?

What Pete's pants? Are they?

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

This is attractive advertising!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Is Pete following Sienna Miller's Edie S nouveau look?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

Argh, mine eyes!

I Am Totally Radioactive! (kate), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

ha, i'd heard about her outfit, but hasn't actually seen any photos, it's even worse than i'd imagined! are those like black satin control top y-fronts?!? she is so not invited to poptimism tonight...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Look at me, I'm wearing TROUSERS, la la.

I will be wearing brown TROUSERS and a green jumper. if I feel a bit too outré I may remove the green jumper to reveal a neatly ironed black t-shirt underneath.

Colette, they're DEFINITELY just control tights! I reckon M&S "bodysensor".

Sie-HEN-na more like (Lucretia My Reflection), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Did I notice the King of Thailand posting on this thread somewhere?

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Friday, 2 February 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'm coming! And coincidentally, I'm going to be wearing my new CHRISTMAS PANTS! As some of you are already aware, these are POSH and SEXY designer pants and they're actually borderline inappropriate, to be honest. I mean, they're almost see through. I'm wearing them because they're my only clean ones though, not because I expect to be showing them to any of you. Please don't ask to see them. Firstly because refusal may cause offence. And secondly because once I'm drukn enough I'll probably just whip 'em out, and nobody wants that.

Also note please: I'm celebrating tonight, having finished my first teaching placement this week. Wooooo! May well end up shitfaced.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

(memo to DJs: do not play Eye Of The Tiger)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

(in case it affords undue opportunity for boxer-emulating-style pants flashing)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

I remember Colette and Jim fake boxing to Eye of the Tiger at the Chapel Bar!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 February 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

I also remember putting a £5 note down Jim's lovely pants on one occasion, but I prefer not to think about it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 2 February 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

That was *great*. Is there any way of turning those radiators off, though?!

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 3 February 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, seriously. So very hot. We were looking for gym-style wipe-down towels at the end.

g00blar (gooblar), Saturday, 3 February 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, awesome. Excellent playlists all round.

robster (robster), Saturday, 3 February 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

um, sorry, due to cd deck situation i didn't notice it being warm. the radiators have little turny things on the end, like all other radiators...

WELL DONE EVERYONE, rickyt and toby for services above and beyond in particular.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Sunday, 4 February 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 4 February 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

yes, i guess i should just turn them down next time! i didn't notice until the end of the night, though.

also no probs with getting the cd player (not that i'd relish doing it again!).

we must put the videos up on youtube...

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

I's like to thank all of my fans but I didn't actually do anything I don't think.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

Videos?!?!

g00blar (gooblar), Sunday, 4 February 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

In the meantime here are some same-old same-old photos

ledge (ledge), Sunday, 4 February 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

What was that, the macarena or something? You guys have much more fun when I'm not there!

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Monday, 5 February 2007 07:29 (eighteen years ago)

I wasn't there, but I think it might be the cha-cha slide.

This looks like it was great - I don't recognise the vast majority of people in those pictures. Sorry I missed it, but then again my weekend did involve a wedding reception where Andrew WK was played so I'd like to think I was there in spirit.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 February 2007 09:23 (eighteen years ago)

It was good to see folks at Poptimism who I hadn't already seen, even if all Mister Monkey and I did was sit in the corner and have Andrew bring people over to talk to us periodically. It was like being the queen of somewhere.

I only danced to the Utah Saints, because the Vicar would excommunicate me if I didn't.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

Nice meeting you, Trish!

g00blar (gooblar), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

Anything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong. So the fact that every record that could have gone right, did go right was a bonus*.

Yes, my work decks being stolen is a slight problem. One I am currently assiduously avoiding.

*Except my wonder wheeze of "announcing" Toby & Collette's nuptuals which was supposed to lead into Come On Eilleen but instead became Lisa's Got Hives - which I then had to dance to so we could save face.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, the cha cha slide. WTF at the way that the entire old persons' Monkey Queendom sofa area clearing out when Utah Saints were played? I stayed seated like a sensible old person. Except for during Happy Mondays. Oh the shame.

Man, the ale was off. It was really off. Bleh.

People snogging on the dance floor should be banned. Get in some nuns to stand about with yardsticks and prod people if they get too close. No one wants to see that shit, it's disgusting.

Fire and Worms (kate), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

Nuns with sticks would be hilarious.

It was, indeed, a pity that the work decks had been stolen. Mister Monkey thought they might be insured, but Tim pointed out that only the very, very kindest of insurance companies would insure decks that had been left for a month in a pub. Still, I hope Pete doesn't get in trouble over it.

And now it is time to make the long trudge to Dublin. Sigh.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

'Monkey, I am sorry I was gloomy at Poptimism day - I will spare the blushing menfolk of the internet but ladies pains physical and mental were pretty bad hence my early exit under a cloud of mis - blergh! COME OVER AGAIN SOON!

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

i was gloomy was on the saturday.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

i was gloomy was i on the friday so didn't i didn't come.

nuns with sticks mmm

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha, i forgot that i told toby to video the action...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 5 February 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

I have the same gas fire as that one in the poptimism photos!!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 5 February 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

yay, that was so much fun!

thanks to toby who, after sitting down with a pint, RAN up the hill to the top of pentonville road to get the bus home so we could have a CD player that didn't skip. awww.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 8 February 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

I don't recognise anyone who goes to Club Poptimism these days.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 9 February 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)

This is a good thing, I think. It means we're more of a club and less of a FAP with dancing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 February 2007 09:21 (eighteen years ago)

I preferred the "FAP with dancing" format :-(

I guess that makes me the equivalent of the original Beatles fan who went off them when they started making money.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 9 February 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

"Making money"!!! Spending a load of money on new decks more like :(

Marcello I think you should come to the next one - it will be my triumphant return to DJing duties with a special Dadrock set.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 9 February 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

I still think the majority of strangers/newbies there are friends of ILX or LJ people but there appear to be more and more of those.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 9 February 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

Given that there were signs saying PRIVATE PARTY I doubt there were too many total strangers there.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 9 February 2007 10:50 (eighteen years ago)

i discovered that there were a lot more people that i'd tangentally invited that i didn't know about. as well as my 4 colleagues, one brought her sister who brought about a dozen of her friends. and toby's sister brought at least four friends, one brought about 6 of their colleagues. so i think it was friends of friends of friends kind of thing.

those people were all intimidated by the private party sign, as well, and several asked permission to come up to dance, which i found very amusing...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 9 February 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a legal/licensing reason for the private party sign?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

"Permission to Dance" - that's a good name for a song/album

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

I brought like 10 people from teh gig.

g00blar (gooblar), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, I might be tempted by that Dadrock set, as long as it's not Guilty Pleasures TM Dadrock...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

g00blar, is it your friends that always seem to pull random girls in the middle of the dancefloor?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

Watch this space (or a space nearby) for March 2nd announcment, plus potential fundraising for new bicycle / decks. Boo!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

xpost, um, yeah, 'cept I think they brought those random girls with 'em.

g00blar (gooblar), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

i phoned in to complain, altho i did not see it myself.

vita susicivus (blueski), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

But the fireplace thing dudes!
