Stupid blog questions

OK, so I'm trying to set up a blog, to write some thoughts about football mainly, a bit of music perhaps and books and somesuch, but I also want to use it as a kind of diary when I go travelling, but.....

I tried to sign up at Blogspot and it kicked me out for not having cookies enabled, when I plainly have, and I have no idea where else to go that will be as easy looking to use.

Can any of you blog veterans give me any ideas/handy hints etc?

these guys have been good to me

(i've had problems with "cookies not enabled" from some sites also, when yes they bloody are you robo-moron!)

my html skillz are still shit, and this makes editing it hard, how do I put in one of those things that lets you see how people have found you via yahoo/google etc? a site meter?

and how do you change alignment of text etc?

so many questions..

chris, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SiteMeter for your visitor tracking needs.

< P Align="Center / Right" > for your text alignment needs (assuming you're hardcoding; that is, typing in all the HTML tags yourself). Everything's left-justified by default. If you want text in a paragraph to be centered or right-justified ... well, duh.

(Just make sure to get rid of the spaces after & before the pointy brackets.) (P stands for Paragraph, by the way. Not to say you didn't know that, but it's better to be super-obvious than assume, which, of course, would make me look like an ass.)

Here's an HTML Cheatsheet. Webmonkey (the site I'm linking to) should also offer additional help w/ your webbing needs.

Thankyou very much David, much appreciated. I did know about the P thing but that's about the highest level of knowledge I have at the moment. Fortunately, being made redundant and handing over all my jobs to other people (and advising them when it all goes wrong) is giving me time to learn.

david that was a brillant list

I set a 'blog' (urgh) up on Blogger.com called Power, Tone, Volume. but it doesn't show up on google etc. Can I insert meta-tags or something or how do people get to see what I'm saying... ?

A few useful links:

Free Meta Tag Generator

For other Search Engine submissions try either Add Me - Search Engine Submission or Submit Express

How do you put those permanent links on a weblog?

stevienixed@yahoo.com, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

On a blogger weblog you go to the 'template' section and fiddle about in there.

A good way to see how it's done (if you're browsing in Internet Explorer) - right click, select VIEW SOURCE. This will show you the HTML code that hides behind the pretty websites we all visit! Woo!

Dunno how to do this in Netscape et al, but I can't imagine it's much different.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks you guys! I worked it out. woohooo.

Is there a way to let people add comments to a pitas.com blog?

Sommermute (Wintermute), Thursday, 26 June 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hope this makes sense - I haven't set one of these up for a year or so, so it's all a little rusty. And may be completely wrong.

You need to find a comments host - I used to use netcomments, but I think they're gone down. enetation looks like the best bet.

Enetation gives you two javascript codes when you follow the 'generate codes' link. The first goes in the head of the basic html file (do this on the 'make custom changes' page). The second needs to be in the entry template ('change the format of each individual entry'). Replace 'MANUAL' with '%%url%%'.

For this to work, each entry needs a unique URL (goes in the 'url' box on the make-new-entry and edit/delete-entries pages, unsurprisingly). I used to use the date reverse-ordered - today would be 030626 - and then add alphabet letters as necessary if there's more than one entry in a day.

What the comment link actually says is determined on enetation's 'settings' page.

(I hope this works - please tell me if it doesn't, and I'll try to work out what I got wrong.)

Thank you very much. I replaced 'MANUAL' with the %%pagename%% tag, I hope that works as well.

Anyone know how to do expandable posts on Tumblr? Or is that antithetical to the spirit of Tumblr? Mind you, I don't really know how to do it on other blogging platforms, either, but it looks like there are tutorials out there for doing it on Blogger, at least.

Speaking of expandable whosits, is there an easy-to-implement, non-JS expandable whosits where the "READ MORE AFTER TEH JUMP" link doesn't show up in the permalinked post?

Hey, does anyone know of any blog templates w/ comments that feel more Flash-y than html-y. To be a little less confusing, I'm wanting comments to work like Tweets (you know, minus the character limit).

autotuna fish (Tape Store), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 00:54 (fifteen years ago)

Have you looked into third party commenting plugins like Disqus or IntenseDebate?

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)

not until now, thx! IntenseDebate looks promising.

autotuna fish (Tape Store), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

ok, so i think i'm probably going to need to ask a web designer friend to do this because there are two things i want and i don't know if wordpress can do this:
1. what I said above, I want comments to post v easily, like tweets
2. i want readers to be able to pull down and minimize comments without leaving the main page

it's 2023

if I want to host my own blog, what's decent software-wise? maybe even just static content I generate and dump to a hosted bucket

mh, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 00:19 (three years ago)

Think Wordpress has been the MS Office of the blogging world for a good decade now, do the alternatives even exist now? No idea.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 3 January 2023 15:47 (three years ago)

yeah? Ghost has a fair number of users iirc

I was looking for maybe a smaller hacky one
