ok, i'm signed up to broadband 24 cable internet access now, and all of a sudden i'm realising about security and viruses and hackers and blahdy blah. telewest change your ip address about once a day so you don't have the problem of one identifiable ip but is that enough?

especially if i sign up to audiogalaxy or any file sharing service, plus all the dodgy things i've been hearing about audiogalaxy recently. people seem to be talking about firewalls and stuff, is this software based (surely i'm not going to have to have some great big PIX in the house am i?!!!)

anyone else on broadband? and anyone else use audiogalaxy?

broadband yes, audiogalaxy yes, although i don't leave my computer on all the time. i suggest you uninstall AudioGalaxy, download the latest version and reinstall it (to remove that spyware thing - key part is to delete the file c:\windows\vx2.dll - instructions were posted in that other thread), and then to protect yrself (if you can't get a free PIX via yr job) then download ZoneAlarm (.com) or a similar free personal software firewall - then you can determine which programs are allowed/forbidden etc

i also have the latest version of Norton Anti-Virus, but it's a bit unstable with Win98

zonealarm is excellent, also get lavasoft's adaware - try zdnet, or tucows or just google for thier sites - thee will be lists a bout what products contain spyware, also how to protect yrself.

another nice little gadget (i hope not spyware) is Naviscope. blocks ads (only in IE and Netscape unfortunately - need to find a proper proxy server to do Opera), prefetches pages, shows downloading status of the page and it's components (big images, mp3s etc), shows transfer speeds etc, keeps yr clock up to date - v helpful on a modem connection too.
