ILX: Recommend me a hotel in Rome!

My folks are visiting there in March and I'd like to suggest some nice accommodation. Can anyone recommend a decent, safe, quiet place at around the 100Euro mark? Any suggestions, much appreciated.

What the fuck do you want, Marks or Euros?

Just kidding.

last time i was in rome i rented a beautifully furnished 1-bedroom apartment w/ a kitchen and a -huge- living room for five days, located in a very central and stroll-friendly part of the city (i.e., 5 minute walk to the colosseum).

i don't remember how much it set me back or its exact location, but i do recall it being dirt cheap and a much much better deal than what any hotel in your budget range might offer (mind you, i went there in july, right smack in the middle of tourist season and it was still very affordable). in other words, dig around and you might find some great apartment deals.

The area just to the west of the tiber island is a lovely place to stay, there's lots of quiet (ish this is rome) littlw family run hotels. Can't off the top of my head remember the name of the area (trestavere rings a bell but that might also be around the station a little to the south)

Avoid round Roma termini station like the plague.

You could also try the few places that are on the aventino hill. very pleasant district. There's a few hotels iirc, and at least one convent that does rooms.

manuel, do you have a url for the apartment people? I'd always rather rent an apartment than stay in a hotel.

this is where I stayed last time I went, I was there for two weeks though: http://aimone1.tripod.com/marco.html
It wasn't terribly close to the major attractions but historic rome is so walkable, it really doesn't matter, we walked all the way across the city from here so if you're used to walking it'll be fine. It is right next to a metro stop so that should do you fine. The owner was lovely.

The first time I went I rented an apartment in Trastevere for 10 days, I can't find the website but the last time I looked at it it was booked up solid so maybe the owner stopped letting it. Trastevere is a phenomenal place to stay if you can find a place.

I second Trastevere as an area, although I have to say that I have been to Rome several times and always ended up in a perfectly clean, serviceable, and althogether unromantic and somewhat overpriced. So good luck to you, and share your good experiences!

i loved staying at the beehive, and they have private rooms as well as hostel rooms:

Thanks folks. I was there myself a few years ago, in a lovely (but too expensive in high season) hotel in Aventino. A private apartment, if clean and relatively comfortable, would suit the olds down to the ground. Thanks for the heads up.

H0tel K1ng on Via Sistina. Clean, simple and so close to everything including Metros that I can't reccomend it enough (it's near Piazza Spagna Metro i.e. the Spanish Steps). I was there last weekend if you need a recent review. The friendliness of the staff was great and they really knew their restaurants. Everywhere was a walk away, for the five days we didn't need to use the Metro at all. For a twin room it cost us each 50 Euro a night. Might be cheaper for double, I'm afraid that I don't know.

You are all heroes.

That beehive place looks great, btw. A group of us were thinking of going to Rome some time this year, and their apartments look ideal.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 15 January 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm. Kv's hotel is quoting us €885 for six nights in November. That's more expensive than the apartment I've got my eye on.

Woah then, forget it. We got it through hotels.com or hotel.com. Maybe they could give you better rates?

A website that I've used successfully in the past is hotelclub.net. Could be worth a try...

two weeks pass...
Avoid round Roma termini station like the plague.

I stayed at the Hotel Raffello on Via Urbana and liked it quite a bit.
