Should I go to a football game my team's more likely to win, or one that will be more entertaining?

I'm toying with the idea of going to either Watford v Bolton (league game) or Arsenal v Bolton (FA Cup). They will probably be about the same price including transport - Emirates Stadium on my doorstep, Watford in zone 6 or beyond or wherever it is. We are far more likely to win the Watford game but it won't be pretty - lots of long balls, set pieces, blah-dee-blah. The Arsenal match will be much more of a beautiful game, but given the fact Henry is back to his old self, it is a match we are much less likely to come away victorious from. I'm in a quandry.

prolly the entertaining one

it's entertaining to win but more entertaining to be entertained

Chance to see Henry etc, I'd go to Arsenal.

If you do win then it'll be even better.

I would rather see us win a terrible game than lose or draw a wonderful one, but then I've never been very susceptible to "beautiful game" rhetoric and I like to see a ball knocked up long to a big lad.

Having said that, I'd rather see us lose against an amazing side than lose or draw against a bunch of know-nowt hoofers.

If it was me, I'd go to both obv.

Go to Watford. It's the morally right thing to do.

I wouldn't go to the Emirates if... actually, I just wouldn't.

If on the other hand you don't share my prejudices, consider the Arsenal game. You've got a better chance of beating them than most teams, I reckon.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 15 January 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

If you don't beat Watford then you'll get that crushing boredom and sense of "why did I pay money to watch us fail to beat a terrible team". Against Arsenal you'll have the cup thing going on, and the kind of impassioned shouting being an away fan playing a big team tends to induce. Also you fucked Arsenal in brilliant fashion earlier in the season.

This said, I have chosen Watford for my trimphant return to Villa Park next week, so enh. It was meant to cost £5, but then the cheap tickets sold out and I'd already committed.

Tomorrow will be the thirty-sixth anniversary of Huddersfield's last victory against Arsenal, according to Soccerbase.

Are you able to get Bolton away tickets fairly easily? If so, I'd probably choose Watford: they're going down and it might be the last chance to go to their ground for a while, you could go to the Emirates any time. Also, the hoofers v beautiful game argument - presumably Bolton's style of play (physical, direct, defensive) will be the same for both matches, so I'd only choose the Arsenal match if you're happy to see them doing all the fancy stuff.

Awww thanks guys! Yes you are right, we do have a reasonable record against Arsenal, but they are just coming back from everyone writing them off completely and they were pretty damned good against Liverpool the other week. Having said that, I once heard a Watford fan ages ago describe their style as 'ambient football' come to think of it, and I don't fancy schlepping all the way up there for that. It'll all be academic if I can't get a ticket, but I think you've persuaded me to plump for the McGunners....

beat them, go on

one each for dioufy-san, lil nicky, and campo

Storefront Church (688), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

NP, I wouldn't call Arsenal's football "ambient". It's more like Mogwai. I like Mogwai, so I say go to the Arsenal game.
