'Hold your wee for a Wii' competition kills woman
Monday 15-Jan-2007 10:16 AM Woman competing in Wii radio competiton dies of water intoxication
19 Comments
A woman has died by water intoxication after competing in a 'hold your wee for a Wii contest'.

The competition hosted on Californian radio station, KDND 107.9, had contestants consuming large amounts of water, then holding off using the toilet for as long as they could, the winner being to last not to have relieved themselves.

But after competing for the Wii, 28-year-old Jenifer Strange complained of headache and was later found dead in her home in Sacramento California. The coroner found the cause of death to be water intoxication.

Staff of the radio station involved were stunned at the news. John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento - the station's owner - said: "We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred."

This is so sad. :-( But kinda... why the fuck would you hold your urine for that long? Just for a Wii.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

This is insane. Can her family sue the people who ran the competition? Legally, did they murder her? Manslaughter?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

unfortunately, the weirdest part of the story is the guy who gave up after five 225ml bottles (1 1/4 litres) over a period of an hour and a quarter?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

Contestants were first given eight ounce (225 millilitre) bottles to drink every 15 minutes.

Contestant James Ybarra told Associated Press news agency: "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Mr Ybarra said he quit after five bottles but remaining contestants started on larger bottles.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

I would be that guy.

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

nick i don't think it's the radio station's fault.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

nick i don't think it's the radio station's fault.

If they didn't explain fully the possible dangers of doing this, and have contestents sign a disclaimer, then they're bound to get sued to shit though.

Also, she's called Jennifer Strange. Or was.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's completely the radio station's fault. It was a ridiculous and unsafe contest that was almost certainly conducted without adequate health and safety provions, and should never have been allowed to go ahead in the first place.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

Can her family sue the people who ran the competition?

Uh dude, she WILLINGLY drank all that water. She's (or rather was) 28 yrs old. You should know that you can get an overdose from drinking too much water. Isn't it the oxygen that causes death if you drink too much water? Can't remember.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

How drinking too much water kills you - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6263029.stm

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

You should know that you can get an overdose from drinking too much water.

But if you don't? I think it's fair to say that anyone taking part in something like this would naturally assume that the organisers had done their homework, and would not be putting the contestants at any risk.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

I would argue that many, perhaps most people are not aware that you can "overdose" on water.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

they probably relied on people's common sense too much.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

You would have they would have consulted at least one medical professional. That their insurance might have required them to do such a thing in fact.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

"They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

That doesn't sound like the organisers knew too much about water intoxication either.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

I never thought about that: the organisers should have known (and warned people in advance). Or even thought about sth else. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

ledge totally OTM here. I find this story very sad, and yeah, i'm kinda surprised if this sort of thing is legal. Clearly it wouldn't be hard to come up with stupid examples of similarish contests that surely wouldn't be, anyway.

It's Official: Wrongful-Death Suit Will Be Filed Against KDND

The attorney representing the family of JENNIFER STRANGE officially announced this afternoon (1/18) that a wrongful death suit will be filed against ENTERCOM Top 40 KDND (107.9 THE END)/SACRAMENTO for sponsoring the water-drinking contest, "Hold Your Wee For A Wii," that allegedly resulted in STRANGE's death.

"This family has been devastated by a shameful, irresponsible and negligent act of premeditated recklessness," said ROGER DREYER, senior partner of the SACRAMENTO law firm of DREYER, BABICH, BUCCOLA & CALLAHAM. "The station knew this was a dangerous and potentially deadly stunt, but flippantly dismissed the dangers. Now three young children have lost their mother, and their father has lost his wife, because a radio station wanted to boost its ratings and increase its advertising revenue by taking advantage of a young woman who simply wanted to win a prize for her family."

DREYER said the suit should be a "wake-up call" for other stations sponsoring similar stunts. "Outrageousness at any cost has become the industry standard -- the trashier and more humiliating, the better," he said. "It's time to stop this recklessness."

As ALL ACCESS reported yesterday (NET NEWS 1/17), the SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT is launching a criminal probe and formal investigation into the death because of the now-dismissed MORNING RAVE's on-air comments, which seem to indicate awareness of the dangers of drinking too much water.

"Hearing the tape, it's very clear they knew of the dangers and could foresee that this could lead to JENNIFER's death," DREYER said. "They knew the health risks of drinking too much water, they knew JENNIFER was feeling ill, and yet they let her leave the station without warning her to call someone for help or seek medical attention. Their brazen disregard for her personal safety is numbing and inexcusable."

Ten Dismissed At KDND Over Water-Drinking Contest Death
Following the unfortunate death of a KDND (107.9 THE END)/SACRAMENTO listener (NET NEWS 1/15) attributed apparently to drinking too much water during a "Hold Your Wee For A Wii" contest last FRIDAY (1/12), ENTERCOM/SACRAMENTO VP/Market Mgr. JOHN GEARY has released a statement: "Effective immediately, the Morning Rave program is cancelled and ten employees are no longer with the station."

ALL ACCESS has learned that among those exiting are nine-year Station Mgr./PD STEVE WEED; Morning Rave members LUKAS, MANEY, TRISH SWEET, FESTER and CARTER; morning show producer LIZ DIAZ; Promotion Dir. ROBIN PECHOTAl; and two others. For more on this from the SACRAMENTO BEE, just click here. (dead link)

So I was at the Atlanta airport, returning from vacation and waiting to board my flight when the overhead TV was showing this story on Larry King. He interviewed the girl who actually won (but survived) and she was stone-faced/emotionally blank the whole time, it was pretty awkward. King also played a lot of audio from the radio show, which was awful (you could even see nearby passengers wincing a bit). There was a woman who called in saying "please be careful, people can actually die of overhydration" and the DJs just laughed it off ("anyone dying in there?"). It's all so sickening/depressing to think about.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 22 January 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

"and two others" = interns?

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Monday, 22 January 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit.

DJ: "Let me ask Carter if anybody's died. Hey, Carter, is anybody dying in there?"
Carter: "We got a guy who's just about to die."
DJ: "Make sure he signs the release."

Charlie Brown (kenan), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds like criminal negligence AT THE VERY LEAST. Probably involuntary manslaughter.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

Female caller named Eva: "I want to say that, um, that those people that are drinking all that water can get sick and possibly die from water intoxication."
DJ: "We're aware of that."
DJ: "They signed releases, so we're not responsible. It's OK."

This may call for vigilante justice, if the law can't provide the necessary compensation to this woman's family. That tape makes these guys sound pretty much like murderers.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Monday, 22 January 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)
