Mackro, aka donut, recently of these parts, comes from a family of dog breeders, specifically ones who breed and show Great Danes. They are of course big and loud beasts, but wusses. As nearly all of them but the oldest, Cadence, had not met me before -- I was staying over at his house on Friday night, and it was the first time I'd been there in almost a decade, I think -- I was regarded with nervous suspicion and bone-rattling woofs in equal measure, which was enjoyably entertaining. Cadence, being old and wise, barked not a jot, instead remaining snuffly and calm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

i was just busy being amazed by someone here in arkansas who has 3 great danes. pawned. do they need to cut their ears to show them?

I was thinking of that, actually, but the amount of goodness I wanted to talk about outweighed it!

=o is nobody else going to comment on this???

Why comment on something that'll be more common than you realize over these next couple of years. ;-) (More seriously, I'm not surprised at all that Mark P. shrunk down his collection onto such a drive for a move from Canada to the UK...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, you do, and more besides.

Well yeah! You can have a bigger fruitcake next year. I just had a piece today too -- if it makes it to February, it will only be because I've ordered a Russian cake. Meanwhile, the fruitcake(s) I gave my mother to bring to the office are still sitting in her fridge, because she keeps "forgetting" (she hates fruitcake). Fuck a buncha New Hampshire civil servants!

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

8. unai - 'a love moderne'
9. the bears in the super bowl? (possible forthcoming bummerz)
10. my job is pretty good

‘•’u (gear), Thursday, 18 January 2007 02:08 (nineteen years ago)

a copy of the saint etienne christmas party cd (only available at the said event)

*seething jealousy* Anyway. So it's good, I take it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 January 2007 02:10 (nineteen years ago)

if it makes it to February, it will only be because I've ordered a Russian cake

Man, I want Russian cake, too! Or do I want king cake? Man.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 18 January 2007 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

See, that's my dilemma. But Russian cake keeps a long time, and king cake not so much, and who's going to eat it but me? Okay, it's not really a dilemma, it's just a reason to not buy a king cake.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, king cake is really only good if you have a ton of people, because who wants to eat that much king cake? (And I love king cake, don't get me wrong.)

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 18 January 2007 02:36 (nineteen years ago)

it's pretty ace, ned. i'll hang onto it until it hits four figures on ebay.

‘•’u (gear), Thursday, 18 January 2007 02:36 (nineteen years ago)

10. I will finish my undergrad this year - meaning, I will graduate before 40. I don't want two milestones to coincide!

9. Nieces, nephew forever...if I had ever had a desire to reproduce, they would be the impetus (Also, ILX mothah/fathah thread, just for the fact that it alternately thrills and, um, sort of repulses me? Only when it gets into greenish poop smelling good.:)

8.Feeling content where I live - mostly because I am finally on the academic path, and am able to take advantage of some good art/music offerings...2nd Friday artwalks, especially. And all the University guest lectures. Being ON campus helps...

7. New Congress. New Governor. Some progress might be made somewhere.

6. Having a long Jan. break to read some novels, including:
The Dress Lodger - Sheri Holmes (?)
By A Slow River - Phillipe Claudel
The rest i will post to ILB.

5. Not turning on the heat until this morning. (maybe one hour five times since last Spring.) It's worrisome for the environment, but I loved not paying the usual astronomical bills.
Also, I was merrily cleaning the house and re-potting plants last Friday - in shorts and a t-shirt!
It's winter now, as it should be, so that's good, even 'though I hate it.

4. Doing a practicum with rape/crisis advocacy and starting to be on the 24 hour hotline. It was an incredible experience - the practicum - and I was able to work out some shit...it was life changing, for me.

3. KITTENS! We adopted two, who were being threatened with drowning...they came to us, tiny and desperate with:Ear mites, fleas AND worms. They are now very healthy specimins; um, the boy kitty is 7 months old and weighs 10 pounds.
I AM a good mommy. Just for things that are covered in fur!
The older kitty is still not pleased, so i empathisize with parents, because I only go through 1/1000th of what you do with babies, siblings, fighting...and I just shut them in a different room and go back to sleep! (See #9 again)

2. having both more and less respect for money. I feel like I have become much more financially responsible ( paying debt while borrowing, being concious of my overall debt) - and I feel like I choose to splurge on really good things - a great restaurant meal, a driving trip for two days. Although this is not actually true, because i have been flying by the seat of my pants as well. So, the seat of my pants, having been patched and mended, are more secure than should be expected, and I respect the seat of my pants more.

1. MY FRIENDS!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 18 January 2007 04:42 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, king cake is really only good if you have a ton of people, because who wants to eat that much king cake? (And I love king cake, don't get me wrong.)

And if I brought it to work on the weekend, it'd still just be a couple people and BtB eating it, and fuck that.

This is how traditions get lost, you know, this is where pink tinfoil Christmas trees came from.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

Don't even say that. Just don't.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 18 January 2007 04:47 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I'll just put a baby in a donut.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 04:56 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose?

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 18 January 2007 05:00 (nineteen years ago)

Because it guarantees I'll get the baby? Well, same thing if I'm the only one eating the king cake, though. You see the dilemma.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 05:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, but then it would still be a surprise when you got it? I don't know, this is why you're the thinker.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 18 January 2007 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

I'll spring-load the little fella!

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

Haydel's, Sam! It's not cheap, though. But it's not too bad, given the cost of shipping food.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:39 (nineteen years ago)

Oh trust me, this northern layover has reinforced that desire for me, bigtime. Sure, snow's pretty. So's Saturn. Don't want to live on either of them.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm trying to avoid more than a couple weeks of Real Winter for the rest of my life,

well you could do worse than austin. This current freeze is very rare for us. we haven't seen proper snow in 5 years. (dallas and other north texas is a different story.) The week before this cold snap our highs were hitting the 80s!

Austin's just way too expensive for me: freelancing is my primary source of income (and the plan is for it to be my only source once I move), differences in cost of living are significant. Texas in general is in my second tier of possibilities, though.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

Move to Western Mass., Tep.
It's great!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

NO!

No offense, just ... no! Aside from the fact that I went to Hampshire (and everything has changed since then, both the school and the town), there's just no way I'd ever live in the northeast again once this spell is up. I'm coasting on the novelty value of "oh yeah, I forgot about scallop rolls" and funny accents right now, that won't last forever.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Aristocratic New England accents: C/D?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

No Northeast... it would be wrong.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

I probably bitched about New England there. I'm so outside the aristocratic loop this time, though -- haven't even seen the rich parts of my family, and I weekend-manage an "upscale convenience store" that makes a lot of its business in career alcoholics showing up at 9am for the beer run. The talk is all football and Massholes and zoning laws, not cucumber sandwiches and people named Cabot.

(We carry Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, though, so I Fucking Love This Job.)

xpost; Yeah, don't worry, you know I won't let it happen.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

"upscale convenience store"

haha, we live near one of these. G. got propositioned in the parking lot once. Does yours sell tiny drug baggies and black booty magazines?

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no no, this really is kind of upscale. Dom Perignon, $20 cheeses, things like that. Big open spaces, place cost a million bucks to build and three years of zoning negotiations, etc. But because it's the only store in the neighborhood and it's walking distance from several condo developments (mine incl.), a high school, and the incongruously cheap fleabag motel and the trailer hitches behind it, the bulk of the daytime customers aren't there for the champagne. It's mostly coffee and cigarettes, beer and chips, and these skateboarding kids who buy all the iced tea every weekend.

(About Western Mass. and you)
I don't think Hampshire students should ever leave the valley - or the campus. It might ruin their experience.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Well, you never know :) Western Mass has a lot going for it in some ways. Three years in Bloomington has convinced me that I never want to be in a college town again, though. I've done my time.

That Hampsters-should-stay-in-the-Valley thing is one reason why I wanted to get as far from Amherst as I could get when I moved, I didn't want to fall into that. If I'd stayed, I'd probably be picketing Starbuck's for taking over Pioneer Valley Coffee or something.

I do love Atkins Farm, though, and I want to try to get out there in the fall if I'm still around.

5. f. scott fitzgerald short stories

:). Which short stories have been your favorites?

BTW, interesting bisection here with my newest fascination, Watergate: I think Hugh Sloan would've been perfectly cast as a Fitzgerald hero for a Hollywood movie, perhaps Anthony Patch from The Beautiful & Damned. Though maybe he'd not have preferred to even pretend to be that kind of person....

Oh, and had I been a teenager in the '20s, I'd have had a serious crush on Mr. Fitzgerald. Man was awfully handsome.

Oh, jeez, another cider donut fan!
The Valley IS the valley. I don't hate it, but I grew up here (Holyoke and Springfield - but weirdly) and I'm mostly delighted by other peoples reactions to it. I see pretentious where others see adorable.
Old Main is now destroyed - the mental hospital - I got a brick! it's so weird - they (the city) are rehabilitating the property, but they tore down everything!
it will be weird for you if you return (I assume you know Old Main). everything else is the same, except that the old Amherst Cinema is back, and the Academy of Music closed.
We can have a small FAP if you want. Hugos? Perhaps? or maybe a PBR at the site of Old Main...

:). Which short stories have been your favorites?

Winter Dreams has always been a favorite of mine and since i have started reading the nearly 800 page anthology of his short stories, The Swimmers and Absolution have joined Winter Dreams. I have never gotten around to Tender is the Night, so that will be my next endeavor after i finish the anthology.

it will be weird for you if you return (I assume you know Old Main).

Yep! I was back last year for an afternoon -- wait no, fuck, it's 2007? I was back two years ago, summer of '05. I remember because I thought it was weird that there were Hampshire people on Hampshire's campus, which never would have happened in the summer in MY day.

All my old coffee places are Starbuck's now -- I'd moved the year the first Starbuck's opened in Amherst, so that was REALLY weird -- but the French bakery on or right off Main in Northampton was still there. The Raven was still there, and thank God Herrell's was still there. The Blue Flame had been gone over ten years at that point.

My experience of the Valley as a college kid was a little different because I was raising kids, so I spent as much time at Wildwood Elementary as I did at the Iron Horse. Oh, the Jamaican place was gone, I think. But yeah, pretensions abounded. Oh, and they put a Newbury Comics where my hamburger joint used to be, man. I bought Bronson Arroyo's CD there as a souvenir of the trip.

I miss Bruegger's, too, just cause they don't have them (or bagels at all, damn near) in New Hampshire.

I want to show Aimee all that stuff, so a trip's in the cards, just a question of when.
