I tried this on ilbks but it failed to elicit any response so I'm throwing it out to the larger community.

I've very much enjoyed The Serial (A year in the life of Marin County) by Cyra McFaddden and am keen to read more around this subject - anyone got any suggestions? The subject being the lives of middle class folk in 70s California.

Lisa Alther called it 'The funniest book ever written'.

Made into a movie or miniseries, I seem to recall...

A movie. Martin Mull, Tuesday Weld and rather implausibly Christopher Lee. I'd love to see it. Not easy to get hold of.

I want to see it, too!

four years pass...

Finally got hold of a copy of the movie. It's not great, but Martin Mull is pretty good in it. The...er...milieu is very recognisable and there's nice little details (macrame owls!) but there's some crappy gay biker subplot that I don't remember from the book and the 'satire' aspects are laid on with an often badly acted trowel. An amusing orgy scene nearly redeems it.
