People who don't understand why some words are googleproofed: c/d?

No.

purchasing a movie for (store) rental by the mid-'90s pricing structure routinely had new VHSes in the >$75 range

indian rope trick (bean), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but I never knew anyone who actually bought those outside of rental outlets.

same dumb-dumbs who invested heavily in video-disc technology (aka high school history teachers?)

indian rope trick (bean), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not saying it was a smart thing to do.

kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 08:22 (nineteen years ago)

Really, though, I don't much remember the days when $100, priced-to-rent was the standard for VHS rather than the exception. Was it Disney that helped establish the priced-to-own market?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 08:38 (nineteen years ago)

I clearly remember Hunt For Red October being $99.95.

kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 08:53 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, if I recall correctly, it was "Channel Five" video that kicked off the whole 'sellthrough' market. Disney sort of held back from this to see how it went, but then they did go for it in a big way (see any car boot sale), and started using the place I was working at (Rank Video) for the volume.
