This is thread where we LUSSST over furniture and home furnishings and things, and talk about what colour to paint our bedrooms.

Because Property is the new Rock'N'Roll.

I want an Opus 1000 to hold all my CDs.

And a couple of these:

http://www.amberradiatorcovers.co.uk/images-gallery/Classic%20Bookcasesmall.jpg

God, I need bookshelves so badly. I am trying to come up with alternatives for my Ikea-free home.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

I need a bedside table, as I've been using a Marshall amp for ages, and it's starting to get covered in candle wax! Argh.

And a desk, for my recording studio - though I probably need a funny size to fit into the paisley alcove where I want to put it.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'd really like shelves like these, so you can see the colour of the walls through behind the books. Especially if I painted the shelves a complimentary colour.

Or should I actually get built-in bookshelves? Are they more or less expensive than freestanding ones?

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

Bookshelves will cost you, regardless. I just ordered some planks from a lumber place and bought some rails and brackets from the hardware store and it still ended up costing me over 100 quid!

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

Getting someone to build them throws up two problems: they are more expensive, and bloody bookshelf people never do what you ask them to.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, my mum told me "just get some planks and some bricks and make your own, for free, like we used to, when we were students!" and I was all "WHERE am I going to get planks and bricks for free?"

x-post I rather suspected that. What I'd really like is to have them up over my sofa, but high enough so that I don't knock my head on them when I get up. I know they'd find a way to muck that up.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

Well there's two ways to go if you want to DIY, you can screw brackets directly into the wall or you can screw rails into the wall and put brackets into those. I think the former looks a little nicer but for heavy books the rails are going to be stronger.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

Even though I own the place, I ph34r for the walls. OK, maybe *because* I own the place, I don't want no silly bugger putting holes in them due to bad DIY and my giant Damien Hirst and Pre Raphaelite art books being too heavy and ripping the shelves out.

Damn, what I'd really like is these lovely folding bookshelves I used to have in NYC, but I gave them to my mum and no idea what has become of them. They were light and efficient, but quite heavy duty.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

Folding, freestanding shelvsessess:
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=13376&PRODID=69933

These are the best ones I could find out of the whole Pier One/Hold Everything/Crate & Barrel/etc etc folding shelf morass.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:29 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, those are very similar to the ones I had - but I got mine from a carpentry type shop in Astoria. Cannot seem to find them in the UK. They were great, because they were stackable and could hold a lot of books, but folded down very easy for moving.

Except I'm not moving for some time. I hope.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

OK, I thought you wanted shelves over your couch though?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

I do, but it's an internal wall, and I don't think strong enough to hold the weight of my books. Oh, I don't know. It seems a wasted space right now.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

It would be fine, as long as you had someone who knew what they were doing and they screwed the right fixings into the wooden batons in the wall. From watching other people get things done in their houses, it does help if you have an actual photo of what you want, and you absolutely stick to your guns.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

ok, i want a bookcase where i dont have to look at the books. i cant find anything.

sunny successor agrees: gay dad always trumps slutty mom (katharine), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Oh! I have had one of those, but you have to look under cabinets, not bookshelves, if you want doors on them to hide the mess.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, to attach shelves to wall you should get a "stud finder", Kate. ;\

I'm not sure I want such things in mine house.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

God, I need bookshelves so badly. I am trying to come up with alternatives for my Ikea-free home.

You and me both. Now I just put the once I read up in the attic. :-(((((((((((((((((

whenever i put in 'cabinets' i get kitchen stuff. i think im searching wrong, though.

someone had a wdyll photo (maybe michael jones?) with some great white low cabinets that im still jealous of.

sunny successor agrees: gay dad always trumps slutty mom (katharine), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

I google cabinets and get things like this:

http://www.yorkradiatorcabinets.co.uk/images/displaycabs/z.JPG

Which I would LOVE to have in my house. Right colour, too, ooooh... but I like looking at mine books. I have one cabinet, but it is glass fronted so I can admire my Folio Society books. But something like this would be good for clutter, I guess.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

a bit too *churchy* for me.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

I am the daughter of a preacher woman. I have no problem with "churchy". I'd live in a converted church if I could.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

:-( Sorry, didn't mean it negative!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

I currently am using an old china cabinet as a bookcase. I was going to get a real bookcase so I could put china in the cabine but discovered the sliding glass doors were lost in a move. So bookshel it remains. it looks alright.

We have a lengthy 'to buy' furniture list. At the top is a dining room table 'cause I'm tired of eating in the den. But we have to wait until the kitchen cabinets come in so the new range and dishwasher sitting the the dining "nook" can be installed. Also need a new sofa suite for the den as we're using g.'s old bachelor sofa. ugly.

Would love a new bed but our 1950's house has tiny rooms and I don't think we could fit in anything bigger than our current fullsize mattress set.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

If you must know I am completely round the bend for this bed, but notice there aren't even ANY PRICES on the web page (for good reason).

http://www.atlaswest.com/images/products_ab302.jpg

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

There are no prices = YOU CANNOT AFFORD IT.

I found lovely CD racks and rummaged around trying to find the price - THREE THOUSAND POUNDS!!! I don't think so.

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I emailed them directly. I think that bedframe starts around seven grand, depending on yr choice of woods.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

I want a boat bed!

http://www.thisisthemidlands.co.uk/midlands/images/xlebl08.jpg

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

isn't that a sleigh bed?

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh I don't know, probably! It's often called a "bateau lit" apparently, which means "boat bed" in French.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

someone had a wdyll photo (maybe michael jones?) with some great white low cabinets that im still jealous of.

Hmm, not sure what they would be. I'm afraid our living room is very Ikea-heavy aside from one 1950s kitchen hoosier (we have another upstairs in the would-be nursery).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

I've only seen it referred to as sleigh bed. I was looking for a "swan bed" (there is one in a country house I was reading about that is beautiful) but can only find crap reproductions.

I've got the big iron framed bed of my dreams. (Well, not really - I wanted a 4-poster bed, but it would have swamped my smallish bedroom.)

The Long Grey And Overcast Tea Time Of The Soul (kate), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Alternately, and much more affordably, I have been to the store to see this one and it's plenty solid. The matching bedroom furniture is terribly constructed, though, so I can't do the set.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

I really want to get a sleeper sofa for the den as neither of us wants to give up our rooms for a guest bed. Seems most of them are ugly or very high though.

I like to think that table is convex so that anything put on it automatically falls off, as a total enforcement of its minimalism

laurel has great taste in beds! i want those too.

Tracer, I totally agree!! I always think that about the "benches" at the airport in MI, they're curved like the cross-section of an airplane wing to make them stylish/impossible to sleep on.

Ms Misery (MissMiseryTX), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

I have sat in this, and the problems are 1) it is not very comfortable and 2) it smelled VERY strongly of feet:

http://www.designmuseum.org/media/item/4006/-1/13_4Lg.jpg

Too bad the photo isn't in colour, as the colour is the best thing about it.

I am going to spend my bonus on furniture, it is decided.

I bought some home furnishing magazine a few weeks ago (over Xmas when there was NO COUNTRY LIFE, OH NOES) and it had the best bed ever in it. It was just the mattress, surrounded by soft leather... plateaus taking up the rest of the room at the same level as the mattress. So that the whole room was essentially bed. It looks like the best thing in the world ever. If I didn't need my bedroom for storage space, I'd so do that.
