HBO Turns "A Song of Ice and Fire" into fantasy series

The series will begin with the 1996 first book, "A Game of Thrones," and the intention is for each novel to fuel a season's worth of episodes.

haha just as this thread popped up I got a breathless email from a friend with that link.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

I got a breathless LiveJournal comment that prompted the thread :) The grapevine is excited!

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

What happens when they get through five seasons and he's still stuck on finishing the sixth book?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

I mean, I agree, this is more likely to come about than someone concluding a deal with Robert Jordan back in 1993 with the words, "So the final book will be out in five years, yeah?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

Supposedly the whole series will be done by 2011. I don't know, I had the same question about Harry Potter.

On the other hand: this is HBO, home of the Sopranos. Five seasons could take them eight years.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

this is cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

i mean, not "cool" in the sense that it is "cool" in any way the term is usually used.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

Just remember before you get all breathless -- Wizard of Earthsea. *Downplay* your hopes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

I just hope they're smart about the contracts. It's a huge cast, with lots of minor characters who won't be needed to the extent that it would prevent them from doing other things -- I don't know how they prevent scheduling conflicts, if Ser Suddenly Important In Book Four is off doing a workplace comedy.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Earthsea wasn't HBO, though. The Sci Fi Channel rarely puts anything out worth watching at two a.m., it's no surprise when they're true to form.

I mean, I'm not saying it'll be perfect, I make no predictions one way or the other, but I'm no purist when it comes to adaptations, and HBO not only has a good track record, it's easily the best network you could ask for for something of this scope -- even if the fates of Deadwood and Carnivale might imply that it's less-best than it would have been a couple years ago.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, HBO i would definitely trust above all others to do this.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

as the last season of the wire was pretty much the best tv i've ever seen, i'm confident hbo can still bring it.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, my worry wouldn't be about quality but about willingness to stick with a long-term project that isn't going to be as popular as The Sopranos. Having this cancelled after three seasons would be a pain in the ass, though at least with Martin involved, someone who's informed would be making the decision as to whether to wrap things up or stay faithful to the books.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

I'll grant you that. Well, I'll wait and see; you know me and TV.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I know how you are, MICHAEL COLLINS, letting the Buzz Aldrins and Neil Armstrongs of the world walk on the moon of television while sitting your lunar module waiting to make sure we aren't eaten by moonbeasts of mediocrity.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

(applause)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

:-D

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

Besides I thought Michael Collins took a bullet for the Irish on the moon or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

On the moon, I can disapprovingly wag a finger six times larger than an Earth finger!

xpost; no, that was later, when he pioneered the Irish Space Program:

That was the year the moon was played by Old Dying Anakin Skywalker, which is why Michael Collins later went on to become a famous Jedi.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

I thought he became a lion, then an evil sensei master, then a Crusader, and then he died.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

A Song of ACTING! and Tim Roth

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

That's crazy, a lion never went to the moon. Not even just to wave from the capsule.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

What kind of cheapskate Irish moon program is that! They were just sending leprechauns with gnomeflingers, I know it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

i need to read these books. everyone at work LOVES them so much. it's just daunting to start, but i've been assured they are very good reads.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

They fall under my 'I've read enough to know they're great but I'll be damned if I wait forever obsessing over when the final book will get released at long last when I can read lots of other standalone things in the meantime so just hurry up and finish it you lazy bastard' category.

nitzer Ed (s1ocki), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

Apparently the new one is past 1200 pages already.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

I've already accepted he'll die before he completes this.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

reading back on his blog, I am tempted to register with LJ and post a "Get back to work" comment on each of his posts. On posts, like his Super Bowl post, where he talks about the chicken wings, beer, egg rolls, and crab puffs, he is going to devour, I feel like posting, "Are you TRYING to leave an unfinished legacy? Skip the wings, get a salad, get to work!"

richie aprile (rockapads), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

Rockapads' George R R Martin is not your bitch:

Somewhere Robert Jordan's already saving a spot for him at the bar.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 February 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

George R R Martin is that pile of chicken wings bitch.
