New Los Angeles thread:
Los Angelenos, I may be in need of your help sometime. Would it it be imprudent to ask?
-- Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (adamr...), January 17th, 2007 5:43 PM.
In lieu of any real questions for now, I'll ask you this -
Tell me about Terminal Island.
-- Rebel.yell.For.Internet.cakes (adamr...), January 17th, 2007 5:44 PM.
I'll let others talk about Terminal Island but you need help with anything, drop a line.
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), January 17th, 2007 5:46 PM.
OK! Though if I did, I'd only ask you about Terminal Island.

And I don't quite get why the downtown Ralph's is such a big deal, if you desperately wanted to go to Ralph's there's one on Vermont and Adams.
yeah, i used to go to that one when i lived near usc. the major draw (since i'm carless) was the free door-to-door shuttle service. it's a pretty good ralph's and it kind of is a big deal that there's one in south l.a. even if it is near usc. it's a sign that banks are more willing now to loan money to entrepreneurs who aren't interested in opening another liquor store or mickey d's franchise. tho there's still a LOT of crappy businesses down by usc.
the downtown ralph's is a big deal because there's finally enough of a critical mass that a major supermarket has a neighborhood to support it. it looks nice from an urban design perspective -- it fits in well with the streetscape, hides the parking away in a vertical garage rather than a mall-style lot, and doesn't have obnoxious signage. inside it's basically a whole foods that sells mainstream products -- roomy, "upscale"-looking, emphasis on premium goods, lots of cheese and bread, decent wine selection, steam tables, places to sit and have lunch.

― get bent, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)
thanks!
― admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)
gelson's is soooo expensive, i have to stop shopping there. ralph's has gone down in quality i feel since i moved here 12 years ago, especially after the last strike, but that downtown one is their deluxe brand, fresh fare or some such, so it sounds like a mainstream gourmet/whole foods approximation.
oh, and if you miss safeway, go to Vons, it's owned by safeway (vons is pretty lame tho, and its slightly upscale version, Pavillions, ain't that great either)
― gershy, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)
Depending on what you get/what's on sale, Gelson's can be pretty comparable to the other stores. They don't have a club card or anything, and yes, it's more upscale and cost more money, but the trick is to get the good stuff there (lunchmeat, cheese, bread, fruits/vegetables, fish) and get the namebrand products at Ralph's or Albertsons or whatever. There is a definite and distinct difference between their produce and other supermarkets' produce.
― Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:16 (eighteen years ago)
i abhor "club cards." i often go out of my way to avoid stores that use them just so i won't have to go through the demeaning ritual of telling the cashier "no, i don't have one, and no i don't want one" and having her be all "waht you don't want to saev MONEY??"
― get bent, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)
ugh, gelson's is super-over-priced old lady selection of food. i sorta hate it. it's the kind of place that sells carrots pre-peeled for 400% markup, and croutons made with imported sheep's cheese for $7/box. i can usually make a good sweep shopping @ pavilions, vons, and whole foods for bulk stuff, w. specialty items from surfas -- which, conveniently, is right nearby.
― remy bean, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)
i get my produce at the eagle rock farmer's market and its terrific! for most other stuff its either super A or trader joe's.
― max, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:47 (eighteen years ago)
Not on the subject of supermarkets --
Hey, any of you guys driving down to San Diego Comic Con this weekend?

The first couple years I went, I stayed with a friend who lives like 10 minutes from the convention center, but now my parents live about 30 minutes north, so I have a perfect place to stay.

We've done this before but I forget - where is like a huge used bookstore full of crazy finds? I am worried that the Bay Area has spoilt me for this but prove me wrong.

Also because I asked Spencer and he said "NOBODY READS".
― admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)
Regrettably he's not far from the truth...
Anyway Elvis T. to thread on that one. Working all these years in a library has spoiled me, I just expect to get whatever books I want to read whenever I'd like.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)
I seem to remember Elvis always recommends that huge place in Long Beach? I'm pretty interested in going to Long Beach, I've never really been there.
― admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)
Can I also just say that my new school has a CRAZY library? It has a fossil collection for some reason. Also bizarre retro-lounge area with sofa/turntable combos for listening to rekkids.
― admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)
What's your school again? And yeah, I was trying to dig up the info on the Long Beach spot just now.

Long Beach FAP I'd be more than fine with sometime.

― chaki, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)
Of course, chaki! Please come! The parties...do look interesting. I see that a deranged looking Liz Taylor was there recently. I went to an opening there in April and it was pretty crazy.
― admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)
Aye. Acres Of Books is the A#1 spot to go to. It's also directly across from a Blue Line station so you really have no excuse not to go.

Adam, I would totally go to parties there. Let me know when you're ready to start heading out. I know of some fun stuff.
― Spencer Chow, Sunday, 29 July 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)
There are tales there.
So, tonight I went for the first time to the LA Memorial Coliseum to see the Galaxy against Chivas. Good experience and nice venue; after years of seeing it in TV broadcasts and the like, the real thing was a pleasure to be at.
Also hit up the glorious Shik Do Rak for dinner. Friend Jorge, by his own account a very picky eater, thought it was fantastic. Another convert made!
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 29 July 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)
i heard on the news that there were hardly any galaxy fans there, but the chivas love was overwhelming.
― get bent, Sunday, 29 July 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)
It's true. Sadly.
― humansuit, Sunday, 29 July 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, very true. Though I got the sense that a lot of people there are Galaxy fans most of the time *except* when a Mexican team is involved. And I couldn't blame 'em.
Beckham was suited up but not playing and I bet anything after the first half he was all "What did I get myself into again?"
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 29 July 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)
I saw Chivas play Barcelona at the Coliseum last summer! Terrible football, but it was a fun day.
― admrl, Monday, 30 July 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)
Was it real Chivas (as was the case last night) or Chivas USA?
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 30 July 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)
Meantime, Gustavo Arellano lays the smackdown on Santa Ana's leaders. Very deservedly too.
