Adam and the Ants

Adam Ant has a MySpace page!
He was sort of my crazy teenage girl crush, and I have followed the reports from barfights to mental wards.
Any other fans?
"Dirk Wears White Socks" is an amazing album, IMHO. As is "Kings of the Wild Frontier".

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 18 January 2007 05:53 (nineteen years ago)

I am very fond of his videos.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 18 January 2007 06:30 (nineteen years ago)

I got his autobiography for Xmas.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:17 (nineteen years ago)

We are lonely, together.
What the hell does he say? he certainly doesn't say much on his MySpace Blog.
I really, really love "Dirk Wears White Sox".
Should this be moved to ILM?

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

adam ant fucking RULES. he might now be a crazy mad bastard, but ... woah, he just rocked bells. as, indeed, did all the ants. esp marco.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 18 January 2007 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

Should this be moved to ILM?

There are a slew of threads there already. Leave this one here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 January 2007 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

"esp marco"

God's own truth.

verbose, bombastic, self-immolating (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 18 January 2007 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

"he might now be a crazy mad bastard". NOW?

Least disappointing record ever released = Stand and Deliver.

everything (everything), Thursday, 18 January 2007 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

my brother was a huge fan
and had a big poster on his wall
he tried to rankle me with his ant music

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Thursday, 18 January 2007 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

i was going to try to answer every thread with a quote, or lyric from Adam Ant.
But i failed.
I love "kings of the wild frontier", but i REALLY love "Dirk..."
Cartrouble? Fantastic. "Never Trust A Man With Egg on His Face". Cleopatra? "Did ten thousand...roman centurions...for after dinner mints."

Dan, now that I know about your excellent influences, I will go see your band. (I do not fear ant or bunnybrain music.)

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 18 January 2007 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

I waited up all night to get front row tickets to see Adam and the Ants at the Springfield (Mass.) Civic Center. I ran into Marco at the record store a few hours before the show! he was very nice.
Adam opened the show, in the dark, by intoning "This is the winter of our discontent..." (it was january).
I think I lost my virginity that night, although it took several years for me to "make fuck" with anyone.
It FELT like I lost my virginity...
SO dreamy. SO good.
I'm swooning just remembering it!
I still go a little bit crazy when certain songs are played - even "Goody Two Shoes" and "Strip", even 'though he had jumped every shark in the world at that point.
it's thrilling to get messages from his MySpace!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Thursday, 18 January 2007 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

:)

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 18 January 2007 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

I really love "Press Darlings". Especially the bit at the end where Adam spits "and they tell FIBS!" snottily.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 18 January 2007 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

So what's the point of robbery when nothing is worth taking?

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 18 January 2007 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

it's kind of tough to tell a scruff the big mistake he's making!

One of my acquaintances, who's now a lesbian, used to go out with Marco - and has observed his appearance change

His boyfriends sure are cute!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Friday, 19 January 2007 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

Where are Merrick, Terry Lee, Terry Gibbs and yours truly! (Not me - Mr. Ant)
Ant Rap was one of the worst things he ever did. Although now that I think about it I like "from the naughty North to the sexy South, we're still singing, and I have the mouth."
It doesn't negate the genius of all the other classics.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Friday, 19 January 2007 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

So unplug the jukebox and do us all a favor.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Friday, 19 January 2007 02:06 (nineteen years ago)

THAT music's lost its taste, so try another flavor.
(Singing sadly to myself.)

aimurchie (aimurchie), Friday, 19 January 2007 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

The harpsichord drop-in bit in Ant Rap is fantastic, a greay pay-off. And the video is berserk too.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 January 2007 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

There's an old, very short thread on ILM: adam and the ants "picasso visit the planet of the apes"classic or dud ?

I recently heard the demo version of this song from the boxset, I guess. It's totally mental, what with all the whooping and yelling etc.

everything (everything), Friday, 19 January 2007 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Leslie Stuart Goddard was an art school student y'know!

"Dirk.." is a really great album.
I think the second album is "Kings of the Wild Frontiers", not "Stand and Deliver".

WHAT harpsichord drop in bit?

aimurchie (aimurchie), Friday, 26 January 2007 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

I recently said in Another Place that "Room at the Top", his last UK Top 20 hit (#13 in 1990), is An Blueprint for teh entire Robbie Williams solo single run. Have just relistened and stand by this.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 26 January 2007 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Also

-- there is something very bonkersly genius about "an 18th Century brain / in a 21st Century head"

-- while the number of pop lyrics pointing out the schism between Us Ver Yoof and Them Thee Old are legion, "don't you ever, don't you ever / lower yourself, forgetting all your standards" still works when one is of the latter category, for not being too specific. It's not the boring suit that's evil, it's my reason for wearing it.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Except I don't wear one, or have to wear one, ha!

WHAT harpsichord drop in bit?

None. I think he means the, erm, steel guitar? I'm not sure this is the right term, Americans have the weirdest instruments.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

It sounded a bit like a harpsichord when I watched the video DVD last week - honest!

I think the video having lots of medieval stuff addled my mind.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

xxxpost - "I think the second album is "Kings of the Wild Frontiers", not "Stand and Deliver"."

Albums Shmalbums. I was talking about the single. After three hits in a row with Dog Eat Dog, Kings of the Wild Frontier and Antmusic expectations were high. Stand and Deliver exceeded them beyond all hopes.

everything (everything), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

It sounded a bit like a harpsichord when I watched the video DVD last week - honest!

Those instruments do sound abit alike. They're primarily distingishable through playing style prob. And also recording conventions.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 26 January 2007 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Now I can't get it out of my head!
Prince Charming. Is bonkersly a word?
Ridicule is nothing to be scared of!

"And even though you fool your souls your conscience will be mine."

Albums Shmalbums? I can only hope that you are joking. I had every single thing - and my mom threw it away!
All of my albums - including so many rare things, like "Dirk Wears White Socks".
I only have a few things because I collect.
Do not ever album shmalbum me! I come from a place of great pain....cricket, and I will rise again! I will have the picture disc of Prince Charming!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Friday, 26 January 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

i) BAD mom. (In this throwingaway respect.)
ii) Bonkersly is now a word.
iii) cricket?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Friday, 26 January 2007 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

Who here has the 7 inch of Ant Rap in a sleeve that opens up like an advent calendar? Did you open the doors or not? I opened them.

everything (everything), Friday, 26 January 2007 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

It was a stupid joke/reference to a stupid movie. Cricket.

The loss of albums is real, and I think this is the first time I have talked about it!
It was years later when I figured it out. I was living in Seattle and didn't have much time for my family. My upbringing has been displayed, i think on this forum.

aimurchie (aimurchie), Friday, 26 January 2007 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

I never had that seven inch. Now I really hate my mother!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Saturday, 27 January 2007 00:39 (nineteen years ago)

Nothing will ever be as awesome as Adam. :(

N.i.c.o.l.e (Ex Leon), Saturday, 27 January 2007 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

"And even when you're healthy and your colour schemes delight
Down beneath those dandy clothes you're just a shade too white"

GENIUS!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Saturday, 27 January 2007 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

"down below" (sounds like 'clothes').I love the drumming on that song.

I've nearly finished his autobiography. Don't know that I'd recommend it - it's kind of interesting at times, but written in a rather boring style. There's a lot of lists that just make you think 'shut up - you're boring me, not impressing me' in a kind of that month we played Cleveland twice, then Chicago, then Detroit, then blah, blah, blah... before attending a wonderful party where I was lucky enough to meet Elton John, Marvin Gaye, John Innman and Her Royal Majesty The Queen! way. The narrative's a bit humourless and repetitive as well - I shagged her, but I couldn't be faithful, so I shagged her as well, but that wasn't enough, so.... and his repeated claims of "it just made me more determined to prove them wrong" keep reminding me of Alan Partridge's "needless to say I had the last laugh".

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 27 January 2007 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

Does he chronicle his shagging of Jamie Lee Curtis?

The marketing, in Britain, around the time of Adam (and the ants) - was stunning. When I was visiting my dad in Scotland I could buy so many cheap trinkets that were "AdaM' emblazoned.
My Aunties, and my father, were horrified, since i was supposed to be writing a 20 page paper on Robert Burns, the Lake Poets, and landscape as muse.
Granted, I was a teenager and wanted to escape the confines and party with the British rock stars. I thought if I could only get to London I would be able to infiltrate their rock star lairs.
Kind of like clueless teens coming to NYC!
It didn't work.
I wrote the paper.
Thanks for the auto biography update!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Sunday, 28 January 2007 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

Finished it now and I think I might have been a bit harsh yesterday - the ending is all about his mental illness and is quite moving.

Sir Tehrance HoBB (the pirate king), Sunday, 28 January 2007 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

three years pass...
