my brother and i live in the same brownstone - diff apts but same building - we're on the same internet network but not like computer network. is it wrong for us to install the same copy of microsoft word? i know there's some illegal stuff going on there, but i figure you have to be able to install it on multiple computers in a house...

no? is there like a computer tech thread i should be posting on?

i think if you limewire for registration codes and register different codes, you're alright.

that's what i heard anyway

oh INTERNET network. i think you're ok regardless. if not, re-install and do what i advised in the other comment

office will likely get mad and shut one copy of word down you can avoid this by using a different serial for one or getting a little program called MS Office v.X Cracker that blocks the port office uses to search for dupe copies running on the network.

OK it's not really a NETWORK

it's just an airport we both use

two totally separate computers

That's still a network.

In any case, it's still against the terms of the license agreement. Download OpenOffice instead, that's legal.

Isn't Open Office kind of crap, though?

For basic word-processing stuff it's totally fine. Download NeoOffice, though, to save yourself some hassle.

As an alternative, you can use Abiword too. There's really no need to use Word anymore.

micro$$$oft would disagree.

that said, in practical terms you, er, can do it - i've, umm, been told - without any problems whatsoever.

I've definitely done it with absolutely 0 problems.

You can't with the latest version unless you find another license key from somewhere. If you try to register two copies with the same license key too soon together, it will refuse to work unless you phone a Microsoft call-centre and beg.

actually, there's probably a tech-dork solution out there somewhere. my experience of office on old macs was that it would basically start a network server that would broadcast version information, and if other installations of office were out there, they would register the illegal activity and shut down.

ah, here's what i'm talking about:

dunno if they still do it now, but if that's the case, a simple firewall would thwart it.
