I Want to Eat There, I Want to Drink There.......DOH!

This is the thread where we talk about bars, pubs and restaurants that we have always wanted to go in and have walked past on numerous occasions and thought "That looks nice/interesting, must give it a try" only to procrastinate too much and watch them CLOSE DOWN.

there are a number of examples here in Oxford and it is speshly galling when it happens here coz the place it small enough for there often only to be one restaurant of a given cuisine, unless it is something v popular like Indian, Chinese, or Italian where there are obv lots like any town or city.

Last night I was in Windmill Road, Headington where there used to be a Persian (=Iranian, right?) restaurant called Flame. I often went thru the thought process described upthread when I worked in a charity shop up that way. On Saturday I was distressed to find that it had been replaced with a bright but rather run of the mill looking noodle bar called Dong Dong.

Haha, just remembered that there was a girl in the office that I wanted to ask out and I asked if she wanted to go to Flame and she said yes, but it was one of those classic "Oh I'd prefer not to coz I have a boyfriend, I thought you meant in a group" situations.

hehe, it's such a comedy classic. Lots of times I've had to 'explain' my intentions,
"Would you like to go out for a drink sometime"
COOL YES THAT WOULD BE AMAZING
"er, i mean not just as friends"
GOD NO!

erm, back to topic.

Fans of Tom and Steve's pre Poptimism, pre Freaky Trigger club nite SUSSED at Lat(r)inos here in Oxford may recall that the dodgy club in question occupied 2 shop fronts on the Plain here in Oxford. For ages the r/h one was a tapas bar and there was a tapas bar in Bristol when I was at uni called Rocinantes which I remembered fondly and so always meant to check it out. was talking about it to a Spanish colleague about 2000 and she said "It recently shut down".

still haven't had tapas in Oxford in fact - there is a place in the castle complex but it looks a tad corporate and rub.

Usually good restaurants close AFTER I've eaten there once and want to go again. Dammit. I've killed about 3 different Ethiopean restaurants just by visiting. :-(

One month later, walking up and down same street saying "I'M SURE IT WAS HERE SOMEWHERE.."

Cafe Serghei in Glasgow. I HATE myself for never going. I tried to book it a few weeks ago but couldn't get the phone number anywhere. Eventually I stumbled upon a local interest website lamenting the restaurants demise in 2005.

charlotte isn't very good for foreign places. we don't have too many. in a little ghetto part of town taking over by asians with a lot of pho places, there was an african restaurant called BREEZE or something right in the middle. looked real small and dirty. i always wanted to go there. now it's an asian nightclub.

Nardini's = over-rated. Has Cafe Serghei shut? Count me in for that one too then. And that Persian place Madchen tried to get us to when Aldo was here last year.

That Persian place didn't seem to be open very long, what was it, Koolba or something?
