(fanfare) Herself and her monkey butler husband will be in town for a few days from Wednesday the 31st. They will be making an appearance at Poptimism on Friday, but it is felt that there should be some drinking other than that. I get the impression that the 31st or the 1st will be the window of opportunity here, as they'll be staying in Dalston rather than some godforsaken place that isn't even on the Mini A-Z.

Vigourous discussion will produce results! Lack of vigourous discussion will produce "Screw you guys, we're going to The Eclipse".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

The Dove, Broadway Market.

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew, we're going to the theatre on the 1st, remember? Patrick Stewart?

Also, I am looking for a good place to have lunch with my little brother, who is temporarily not drinking. Any suggestions?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

What part of town?

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Accentmonkey, can I give you some "stuff" to bring over to London for Andrew Farrell?

The Real Dirty Vicar (dirtyvicar), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be there!

...oh, wait, I can't make it.

do i have to draw you a diaphragm (Rock Hardy), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I don't know. I am very bad at London. We will probably be shopping and hanging out in the city centre during the day on Thursday and Friday, so probably there. Somewhere.

DV, you sure can.

Rock, awwww.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

Central London FAP I would certainly love to go to. Hackney FAP I would probably be less likely to go to. Take that as you will. ;-)

Shoes and Shoegazeability (kate), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

There is a great Korean, called Polo, by centrepoint which is very good for Lunch (when I worked over by the BT tower I'd eat lunch there at least once a week)

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

That sounds excellent. Thanks Ed.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

we're gonna end up at the glasshouse stores, aren't we?

i am free on both the 30th and 31st and definitely want to come to this, and would even if it were in, i dunno, tokyngton. (IT IS REAL I JUST SAW IT ON A MAP.)

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, wait! There is Folk on the 31st.

Shoes and Shoegazeability (kate), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

There is. FAP in the queens head, essex road.

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

ooh i like that idea too.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

Everyone who FAPs must do a song at the open mic! It'll be like 17th Century Karaoke!

Shoes and Shoegazeability (kate), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

It's time I fapped - 30th is out for me, 31st may be possible if in central Ldn.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think Middlesex will be necessary.

xpost - Folk will definitely not be necessary.

xpost - 30th is the day before Accentmonkey arrives!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Accentmonkey FAP sounds OTM! Yorkshire Grey anyone?

In fact I fancy a pint RIGHT NOW but that's my own problem.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

FAP downstairs, Folk upstairs, magic

Ed (dali), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

I will tip you if you promise to keep the folk away. Is that how it works?

Britishes Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

If you do end up at the Glasshouse Stores, I might pop in and say hello, as I work right round the corner. Don't let that put you off.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

x-post But then I will not get to FAP at all, I will just spend the whole night staring at the cute banjo player!

(I cannot believe I just typed the words "cute" and "banjo player" in the same sentance. How my father would laugh.)

Shoes and Shoegazeability (kate), Monday, 22 January 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'd prefer no further north or east than Islington/Shoreditch really. Queens Head is fine for me. Central London is better obviously. I'm having no truck with any folk.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

There is no folk downstairs at the Queens Head. If you go to the pub, there is no way you can accidentally encounter folk. Unless you make the mistake of thinking the loos are upstairs.

Shoes and Shoegazeability (kate), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'd love to see the Accentmonkey, but fapping in Hackney is likely to be a bit of a challenge for my old bones. I could make the repulsive Old Queens Head at a stretch but West End is generally a better plan, innit?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

no folk. no 'bars'.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

No dogs. No Irish

I hope I can make this. I think I am busy on the 31st.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Are you still Clerkenwell-based, Ed? Perhaps Accentmonkey could meet the folk people for lunch instead somewhere around here.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

INTREPID FOX!

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 22 January 2007 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes. Lunchtime Thursday or Friday is also good. Or coffee, or some other thing. I am in London to meet and have fun. On Saturday I go to Bishop's Stortford to see my other brother. You are all fascinated by my life.

So, wait, does this Queen's Head, downstairs, suit most people? Let's go there then, yes?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 22 January 2007 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

Um, that's not really the impression I'm getting, but you're the boss.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

To be constructive: My alternative suggestion would be that if we can get a few people there early enough, we should be able to get a few tables at the Blue Posts Newman Street and possibly move upstairs when they open it. I'm not saying it's an incredibly original idea - I always pick the BPNS - but it's enough to get the ball rolling.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

How about somewhere further east but still central. The Duke of York Roger St is always good.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Equally plausible for my purposes. Also I've just remembered the Calthorpe Arms, slightly north of that. You haven't answered my question re: are you lunchable?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

or lord john russell? they let you bring chips in from outside.

emsk ( emsk), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

No one mention any more pubs, this is unnecessary fanny dangle.

Calthorpe Arms is the best of that lot I think. Isn't the Duke a bit on the small side?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but it is The Best Pub in the World (TM)

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

No one mention any more pubs, this is unnecessary fanny dangle.

Yes, sorry, my acceptance of the other offer was simply an attempt to reach a consensus. Pick a pub that suits the majority. I will be there. They all sound good to me.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

(TM) in this case stands for total madness, I'm assuming?

Looking forward to seeing you, AM!

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

little duke, not big duke

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

i.e. not the pub I live on top of.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

That's even madder.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Tim, could you get your friends to get me some nappies off that beach, please?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Nappies Galore!

I saw that listing vessel, on Sunday. It wasn't far off shore. All the action's on Branscombe beach, not Sidmouth. They're an odd lot up Branscombe, although I can recommend one of the pubs, The Fountainhead. it's great.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

I am jealous for two reasons: 1) you get to drink with the lovely monkies and 2) you get to do it in the Calthorpe!

Have fun everyone!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

I was drinking with the lovely monkies last night Kevin, are you jealous of me too?

The Real Dirty Vicar (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Were you drinking in the Calthorpe?

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

No, we were in the Porterhouse. It was one of our secret Frank's APA meetings. I confessed to not being very good at listening to music. Good times.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

I cannot wait for next week! Seeing people again! Hi Tim, Hi Sarah, Hi Nipper! Seeing my brother's posh new house for the first time! Seeing Patrick Stewart play Antony! Rah!

Sorry, I'll stop now. I just had to get that out of my system a bit.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

No, we were in the Porterhouse.

Then, no.

Enjoy it AM, FAP soon one hopes.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 10:16 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, we could always go to the London Porterhouse (she suggests not entirely seriously).

So is this the Calthorpe? Good good. But what day?

(I remain thirsty)

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

31st.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

God, that Porterhouse looks like a nightmare. I am certainly never going there.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

Wednesday is a good day for drinking. Oh gosh! Is TODAY a Wednesday too? I'd never noticed!

The Porterhouse was the first PROPER (ie non-meeting) pub in the last Trig Brother (if I recall correctly, I had PARTAKEN a little) - I remember a cavernous lack of atmosphere and a boggling barstaff faced by our sheer weight of numbers. Can't imagine sitting down merrily for a night in there for all the tea in Stockholm.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

If it weren't for the existence of the Punch And Judy, the Porterhouse would be the worst pub in London.

A very good friend of mine, and professional Irishman, recently made the ludicrous claim that the Porterhouse is "like an Irish pub". This led to us drunkenly mocking both his lack of taste and claiming he had no feel whatsoever for Irish culture. He got very upset.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 January 2007 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

Bump! Is today!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 10:14 (nineteen years ago)

A very good friend of mine, and professional Irishman, recently made the ludicrous claim that the Porterhouse is "like an Irish pub".

it is probably a bit like the several Porterhouse branches in greater Dublin.

The Real Dirty Vicar (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 10:33 (nineteen years ago)

I hope not for your sakes. Are they huge cavernous places with rub non-branded beer and bad covers bands playing No Woman No Cry?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

I can't make the pub tonight by the way - sorry kids.

BTW looking at this thread it is very confusing which pub you are meeting at? If it's the Calthorpe (or wherever) let me know and I'll put it in the thread title.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

Is today?? Sheesh, erm, ok, right I am double booked! Is this cut and dry at the Calthorpe? I am 'dining' on TCR, don't suppose you fancy a change of venue to the Bricklayers Arms solely for my convenience perchance? :)

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

I can't make tonight but could make a Dalston FAP tomorrow if there was to be one.

vita susicivus (blueski), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

Tomorrow we is being cultured.

Matt, it is indeed the Calthorpe Arms, don't be confused by Starry's leet HTML skillX0r.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

Sorted then.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

Bottoms. Oh well, I might be able to come depending on din din situations, I hope so anyway.

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

Due to ludicrous amounts of work, I can't make tonight either :/ Hope to pop over to Dublin some time in the spring, so maybe I'll see then, 'monkey.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

i am prebooked also :(

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

I am going to appear at this FAP, I hope. I only know about it because the Monkey told me, this week. I wonder if the Doc will attend? Speak, Doc!

Is the Porterhouse, Dublin, a place I have been? ie: the one with the exciting lager, near Pearse Street or wherever it was? Or, what was that place called? That was a good night, once I found you all. I recall now that my initial quest is, or was, documented on a Dublin thread.

Also: the Vicar has been to the Calthorpe Arms. Irish Pub Connections.

the finefox (the pinefox), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

Which pub was that, PF? The one where Carsmile's party was?

I don't think you have been to any of the Dublin Porterhouses. The two good ones are well outside the city centre (Bray (not even in Dublin) and Drumcondra-Glasnevin).

Wait, exciting lager? how exciting was it?

The Real Dirty Vicar (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Are they huge cavernous places with rub non-branded beer and bad covers bands playing No Woman No Cry?

the one in Temple Bar is a bit like this.

The Real Dirty Vicar (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

It's not cavernous! I think PF means Kehoe's off Grafton Street perhaps? Or the Gingerman with the pictures of Yeats.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

I may have missed it but is there anny indication of what time people (at least you people as opposed to people in general) will be arriving at the Calthorpe this afternoon?

It turns out I will have to leave early, for reasons of grown-up real life intervening. Bah.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

hang on this is tonight? i can't make it :(

lex pretend (lex pretend), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

6ish

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be there a bit before that.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

incredibly hangovered

:(

m@p (plosive), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

there is only one sure fire cure for drinking too much beer.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

out of bullets

:(

m@p (plosive), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 17:04 (nineteen years ago)

KvNol: yes, the Gingerman! Which had special red lager ... which had run out by the time we arrived? But we ordered ... a *pitcher* of decent ordinary lager, I seem to remember. This was good. Kehoe's was good, too. That was when you were hiding from me on that upstairs landing that took me, *literally*, about an hour to find.

I am going to go to this FAP soon, in the hope that tonight's footballing disaster is screened at it.

the finefox (the pinefox), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

i went and bought a new computer instead of going to the pub, sorry.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

PUB WAS GOOD

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 1 February 2007 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

It turns out I will have to leave early, for reasons of grown-up real life intervening. Bah.

!!!

i went and bought a new computer instead of going to the pub, sorry.

Has it got Windows Vista? If so, I think we need to know all about it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 1 February 2007 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

**I wonder if the Doc will attend? Speak, Doc!**

I'm confused. Is it tonight (Thursday) or was it last night? If tonight, sorry PF - I can't. I do hope to be out soon, definitely the NedFAP. Hope everyone had a good time, or has a good time, depending on which day.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 1 February 2007 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

This was yesterday. Sorry 'monkey - when I rolled out of the restaurant I had to go straight back home else I'd fall asleep in the street with my big fat belly. It was pretty late anyway, I would have only made it for the last half hour if you were even still there...

Bhumibol Adulyadej (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 1 February 2007 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

I made it for fifteen minutes! Hurrah!

I Am Totally Radioactive! (kate), Thursday, 1 February 2007 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

no it's got XP, thank god. there's no way i'm going near vesta (call it by it's name) for a good year until the script kiddies have found all the major holes in it...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 1 February 2007 11:39 (nineteen years ago)

It was delightful to see you chaps.

I miss London FAPs, a bit.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 1 February 2007 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, bring back the London FAP, the weekly NY ones reminded me how much random fun they could be.

Poptimism is great (AND TOMORROW) but no replacement.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 1 February 2007 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

What was that thing about two Fridays ago?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 1 February 2007 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Doesn't ring a bell.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 1 February 2007 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

if you call it, they will come (re FAPs)

vita susicivus (blueski), Thursday, 1 February 2007 12:33 (nineteen years ago)

Well, we have just had a lovely lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Monkey (we went to the Tai Cult Food buffet because La Porchetta was mysteriously CLOSED) and sent them off to look at maps at the British Library.
