I just took my first karate klass. I really enjoyed it; imagine I'll be sore tomorrow. It was really fun!

So who in this house has a mean brick chop?

Words of wisdom for me as I embark on learning something new?

does not the ocean need the shore?
does not the mountain need the wind?
does not your scrotum need kicking?

Srsly, aren't there any karate kids here? It was just a matter of time til I started karate, people have been making "wipe on, wipe off" references based on my last name for years (Daniel-san).

Do you guys have Joe Esposito's "You're The Best" somewhere in the house.

Maria, I've wanted to take a martial art for years! The last time I went into a place, though, the guy said "Are you here for the aerobics?" I said, "No, for karate." Him: "For your kid?" Me: "No, but never mind. Have a nice day." Very cool that there's a place taking adult students near you.

Sorry, Maria. My experience is basically all with Chinese styles (taijiquan, shaui chiao) with just a smidgen of judo. I can tell you that in kungfu movies, Japanese karateka are often purely sadistic villains, and sometimes are even shown with green skin, fangs, and cat's eyes. Ah, racial sensitivity.

Candy: tastes like chicken, if chicken was a candy. (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

I took up karate for two weeks after seeing the Karate Kid 1 & 2 Double Bill Screening at the Odeon.

I also took up springing around in legwarmers after seeing Fame.

This post reminds me of Ross from Friends.

I'm taking the lessons at a private dojo that doesn't advertise lessons and doesn't give lessons to kids (AFAIK). I know one of the instructors. The other 4 people who were there are black belts. Last night we warmed up together, and then the sensei (sp?) took me aside and went through the moves with me individually while the others practised a form. Afterwards, they all said they were glad to have me join and that they had all had a first day and I should move at my own pace and keep coming back. Very supportive!
