Jimmy Johns. Sub shops.

GEAUX BEARS. (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

jimmy johns rulez, even i, a DCer know this!

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

Ahhhhhhh. Why have I never seen one of those here? They were all over E. Lansing when I lived there.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know if you have Big Mike's/Milio's, but Jimmy Johns >>>>> Milio's

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

They're all over Chicago too.

Whenever I pass a JJs I think of the sewery smell that emerges in spring time all around Chicago.

GEAUX BEARS. (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

State and Jackson, and Chicago Ave near State for example.

GEAUX BEARS. (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

WTF, Dan, there's lots of Jimmy John's in Chicago.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

And they all have the FREE SMELLS sign.

GEAUX BEARS. (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

Btw I think her name is Kitka. Comrade Kitka.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

dan, i think they've only shown up here in the last two or three years? or maybe they were here all along and there's been some sort of franchise explosion but they're in more places than they used to be. including on division just west of damen.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

Subway? check
Quizno's? check
Potbelly? check

Why would I have seen a Jimmy John's?

Thank you, Kenan, for jessica_butt.jpg. Time to turn images off again...

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

sewery smells in chicago - on illinois around wabash as well as state and kinzie. wtf is going on under state street? besides the red line that is.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

I think Kevin is right, though. There seems to have been an explosion of JJ's lately. There are now JJ's on Lawrence in Lincoln Square and on Broadway in Uptown, for instance. (I eat at the one inside an office building at LaSalle and Lake.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

I only object to this thread title because JJ's is not exclusive to Chicago (although it did start in Charleston, Ill., at Eastern Illinois University).

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

Jordan, that reminds me of Ekaterina.

I'm Fuzzy (coco), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

i guessing it's tied to the fact that sub shops are among the cheapest to own and operate as well as having a high profit margin.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

Ekaterina needs to improve her web design skillz.

Kitka is embarassingly enough a reference to Catwoman's undercover identity in Batman the Movie.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe this will be the one week of the year where I buy indie rock cds, there's a lot of stuff I'm interested in all of a sudden (Field Music, Deerhoof, etc.).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

I only object to this thread title because JJ's is not exclusive to Chicago

This could also be said of "If Hep C Was Attacking Your Face" and "Egg Donors." And Sweater Weather.

GEAUX BEARS. (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

weren't the hep c ads chicago specific? it wasn't a reference to the disease, it was to the ad campaign.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

2x

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Did the ads only appear in Chicago? I don't know. I thought they were maybe an IL Dept. of Health thing.

Now I wish I had called the thread "Bag Tag."

GEAUX BEARS. (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, we had the hep ads here, too.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

Now I wish I had called the thread "Bag Tag."

OMG THE HORROR!!!!!!111one

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Horror doesn't come into it until we start talking about that the top photo would be.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

wtf is bag tag?

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

The last thread didn't have a top photo at all, and it was niiiice.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

Chicago: New York has Hepatitis Ads Too.
Chicago: (Or New York?)
Chicago: Salt From the Sidewalks gets in My Shoes and Makes My Feet Like the Scratchy Part of Vel-Cro.
Chicago: Streetwise, Help the Homeless.
Chicago: 800-588-2300, EMPIRE!

GEAUX BEARS. (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Bag tag is a bonding experience between Dan and his friends.

One time at Crew I saw a guy PUNCH his friend in the balls on 4 seperate sneak attacks. It was HILARIOUS.

GEAUX BEARS. (unclejessjess), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

I'm so sorry I'm male. So so sorry.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

I do not believe I would enter into any sort of friendly relationship with someone who I suspected might one day punch me in the balls.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I'm probably going to regret this, but oh well...

Bag Tag is when a group of people (i.e. me and my idiotic UP friends) who have testicles try to snap/slap/flick/otherwise lightly strike each other's testicles while simultaneously defending their own against similar attacks. In my experience, this is done fully clothed and ususally heavily intoxicated, and almost always leads to falling on the floor, hilarity, and some pain. Though not too much pain. When I described it to Kenan he called it "the gayest damn thing i've ever heard" which I guess is kinda accurate, except no one is getting f-ed in the b. I personally liken it to any number of Jackass sketches.

I brought it up in the "hitting men in the testicles...humorous" thread, and someone found it "horrifying". Which, if you're a complete nancy boy, I guess it is. I feel sorry for people who don't have friends who they feel close enough with that they're willing to take an occasional ball-strike from them.

xpost: Not punch... we're not that crazy.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

You can see on the poster that Eckart is about to punch that other dude in the balls.

Charlie Brown (kenan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

One time at Crew I saw a guy PUNCH his friend in the balls on 4 seperate sneak attacks. It was HILARIOUS.

and it IS hilarious as long as you're an observer and not a participant. esp. in a bar.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, Kr just watched that movie for the first time the other day. Later that night I arrived at her apartment cautiously, prepared to be the whipping boy for the sins of men.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

The last ball-related event among my friends was definitely a punch, and definitely hilarious (and injurious). It followed the phrase "if you do that one more time, I am going to punch you in the balls," calmly spoken.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

hello from glasgow :)

i'm not sure who is in chicago other than Jaymc and kenan but i'm spamming this for J amd anyone else who may be interested:

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

dan, it was called "cup check" in high school, and it was a light upward tap because, as we all know, a glancing blow can be just as painful as a full-on punch. thankfully, i can say i never had my cup checked nor do i inspect anyone else's. owie!

attack all monsters (skowly), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:35 (eighteen years ago)

That reminds me of tour news with slight interest to John:

attack all monsters (skowly), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

Did you order something? My package hasn't gone out yet, FYI.

Laurel (Laurel), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

I'm watching LOST tonight.

I'm thinking of seeing Grizzly Bear at Subterranean Friday.

Yeah, I was planning on doing this, too. Thanks for the reminder, I'd like to buy tix in advance.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

Just realized that that means I can't go to Hoot Night, but whatever.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

My kind of fun/exiting, anyway - Adam Rapp (very good playwright, good writer) is reading from his new novel at the Steppenwolf garage tonight at 7.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

So weit wie knock-kneed (kenan), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe it's sort of a self-punishment thing after you've been out drinking all night and don't feel comfortable being in civilized society.

I went there once. The food was really pretty good, and cheap. The porn was really pretty bad.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Who really wants to watch porn while eating?

People with warped senses of humor?

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

Doesn't Twisted Spoke do that?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently so, but they do it at night.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

I thought the Twisted Spoke did that on Sunday mornings.

I do have a surname, but it's silent. (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, re: stuff tonight, Glenn Kotche is playing with some folks at the Hideout.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

I must be bored if I'm explaining why I dislike Dylan for the 3000th time over on ILM.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

Because you're Simon Cowell's butt boy?

I do have a surname, but it's silent. (unclejessjess), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

What does Simon Cowell have to do with it?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

Wow. That woman at UIC was right. At DePaul I can "Transfer courses from other colleges within a grade of [freakin'] C- or better[!]"

xpost- Simon Cowell recently talked shit about how Bob Dylan "bored him to tears." In the same conversation he lauded Kelly Clarkson.

I do have a surname, but it's silent. (unclejessjess), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Huh, well, I agree with him on that.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

You're fucking nuts.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, I know that Dylan is more important and influential and more fascinating as a person and cultural figure and all that, but there's no Dylan song that I like nearly as much as "Since U Been Gone."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

That's a Max Martin song.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sorry, I don't really want to argue about this. People like what they like, and it should be left at that.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

I'm with John, sort of. But it's kind of like comparing unfamiliar sushi (sea urchin!) to Pringles: I'm more likely to want to munch the Pringles, but I wouldn't say that the Pringles are superior.

I do have a surname, but it's silent. (unclejessjess), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

Better example-- comparing reading The Sound and the Fury to watching Roseanne. Or running 2 miles to lying around drinking beer.

I do have a surname, but it's silent. (unclejessjess), Thursday, 8 February 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

I like Bob Dylan a little more than Kelly Clarkson.

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 8 February 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

I like the sea urchin analogy best, actually, because the other examples make listening to Dylan sound like hard work or something. Which, you know, it's really not.

kenan at julia's place (julesbdules), Thursday, 8 February 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

Roseanne was a great show, though.

Juulia (julesbdules), Thursday, 8 February 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

seconded. Until the second Becky.

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)

I don't really like Dylan.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

I'd be upset if you did.

but I wouldn't say that the Pringles are superior.

Why not?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 8 February 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

I think Jenny saw Tuaolo speak at the Harold Washington Library last year.

Jeff and I saw a whole panel of gay athletes. Tuaolo was possibly the nicest person I have ever seen ever.

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

Steve Guttenberg's Midnight Runner (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a TT tonight?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

I feel like doing something FUNZONE tonight but I don't know what.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

I think I would go to a TT.

Steve Guttenberg's Midnight Runner (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

I have something bar-prep related to do every weekend for the next three weeks, then I have a weekend off, and then I take the MPRE. I also have a couple papers due the week prior to that.

So, yeah. I'll go out for TT because I need to get into the FUNZONE while I still can.

Steve Guttenberg's Midnight Runner (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

i will not be attending tt but i will be in uptown later for drinks. nick, i think live fast die is playing at sub-t tonight. the first time i saw them i thought they were a blast, the second time i thought they were a riot, the third time i started thinking that i'd seen this all before and the last time i saw them i think i stayed in the pool room of the bottle for most of their set.

but they're really fun those first couple of times! a little idiot rock goes a long way in my book though.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

There's an interesting show at the Double Door tonight as well.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

if i were to go to tt tonight where would i go?

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

also, what does it say about us that we all started planning our afterwork drinks at 8:30 in the morning?

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

It says we are slack and should have started planning at 8:30 on Monday morning.

Steve Guttenberg's Midnight Runner (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 8 February 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

I would like to make a motion that we have a late TT in my hood (Club Foot? Innjoy?) and then go to Subt or Double Door to watch one of those shows. Or people could come to our apt to drink and then head to a show. Hmm??

I'm Fuzzy (coco), Thursday, 8 February 2007 15:00 (eighteen years ago)

Or we could incorporate something else in with our TT, like bowling or karaoke, which I'm sure I just misspelled.

I'm Fuzzy (coco), Thursday, 8 February 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Had we talked about Small Bar at some point?

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 8 February 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

i'd be down for some small bar action.

chicago kevin (chicago kevin), Thursday, 8 February 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

New thread time, I decided.

Chicago: Yeah, it's kinda like that.
