the tu gendhat house. there aren't any photos there though. I'm not sure it's the most beautiful. but I sure like it.

brno.

this is where I'm going. apparently. I don't know so much about it.

the town's mascots are a stuffed alligator [which they pretend is a dragon] the real story, they say, is that it was a gift from some sultan to try and ingratiate himself or something [=I don't actually know.] yeah, and a wooden wheel. I like the WONDERFUL stories attached to both them. partly why I want to go there. and because they say it's super cheap.

okay. so the last two links there don't work. I wish they did.

They have motorcycle grand prix(es). Name suggests it is cold and negative. I went through it on a train once, but it was dark.

It's quite near Austerlitz (probably now called Asrliecziw or something), site of Napoleon's greatest victory.

jak se mas, Richard? vitam vas v Brno! na schledanou!

pretty good huh, my czech lessons helping me loads, till i failed it.

brno: isnt this smelly industrial land - ie definately preferable to prague to visit?

ambrose, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yr k-rad & 3 ov his friends visited old czechoslovakia shortly after the communists got hoofed out, but before it split (very sadly, I thought) into 2 countries. We had the best time staying in Brno (pron burrrr-no) with this nice family. they took us to all the sights, & we paid for everything. It was ridiculously cheap. (prob much less so now) If U like roman catholic church architecture the area surrounding Brno is rich indeed. As well as massive cathedrals (at that time there was also usually a western fundie xtian railing against godless communism in a rather unobservant manner I thought) we also saw mummified saints and.....A PIECE OF THE TRUE CROSS! (allright, prob it wasn't really) the ice caves are very nice too. The czech republic is a v small country so richard could prob travel round pretty cheaply. I recommend Telc (pron teltss) as possibly the most beautiful place I've ever seen. Kutna Hora was good too. Lidice is worth a visit, but be prepared to get depressed, because it's very sad. Prague is to be avoided IMO for 2 reasons 1/ the place is so nice & charming it's hard to leave so U don't see everything else 2/ at least when I was there the place was full of really horrible trust fundies who were living some kind of k-lame hemingway-esque fantasy. Vile people. Czechoslovakia was the best place I've ever been to, this was s.th. like 14 yrs ago. possible globalised McKultur, & "Branding" have homogenised parts of it, but I'm sure plenty of it is quite like what I saw. At the time I had no commitments, & to be honest I often wish I'd tried to get work there & live there. Bratislava was the only place I didn't like.

thanks!

what did ambrose say...? I know nonw czech. except 'lager'. pronounced 'pee-voh', I believe.

I'll fly into prague. but I'll get to be back there sometime. we have a design project for ziln which is right by brno, they say. I hope to travel around quite a lot. I book-ed my flights last night. one hundred and eighty pounds from glasgow to stansted to prague. out a week on saturday. and in at the end of may. pretty cheap. there are some kids from brno at my university just now, they said the trains ain't so great. is there a BEST WAY to travel within the country?

richard john gillanders, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Why can't you just fly there though?

Ally C, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am flying there. I meant travel in the country. like trains and buses and stuff.

richard john gillanders, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I see.

Ally C, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YES ME NOW.

richard john gillanders, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What else is there then Richard J. ?

chris, Monday, 25 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

weak but cheap beer.

it's pretty easy to find your way around. a is a nice town. as I can be seeing so far.

the ol' tug-end-hat house is well not maintained.

I went go-karting today.

internet access=not good. +the keyboards all want to have the z and the y swopped around and without easy to get at AT or HASH symbols.

I need the toilet.
