Clive Owen as Philip Marlowe

live Owen has landed the role of legendary fictional private eye Philip Marlowe.

The British actor has signed up to star as the flawed sleuth - created by Raymond Chandler in his collection of detective novels - in a new movie series being created by Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment.

Strike has obtained the rights to the Marlowe adventures - set in 1940s Los Angeles - which include The Big Sleet and Farewell My Lovely, and will produce the pictures with Owen acting as executive producer.

Owen, 42, was reportedly touted for the role after his impressive narration and performance in cult movie Sin City.

A studio executive said: "Clive is thrilled to have landed the much-sought-after role."

Studio bosses are determined to stick to the noir spirit of the books, keeping Marlowe the hard-drinking, wise-cracking, world-weary character fans have come to expect.

Producers are still deciding which titles to adapt to the big screen first.

Marlowe has previously been portrayed on film by Humphrey Bogart, Dick Powell, James Garner and Elliot Gould.

Talked to the gf about this last night. I think it could be perfect.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Could work.

Which accent is he going to go with, i wonder.

kingfish moose tracks (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 25 January 2007 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

And he wouldn't take James Bond? Classy.

I love the original version of the Big Sleet though....Bogie and Bacal getting snowed in, the chauffer losing control of his car in the freezing rain...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

yeah could be good. Gould is likely to remain my favorite though.

Has anyone seen the Croupier? He's quite hard boiled in that. I can definitely see it working.

x-post I watched the Long Goodbye for the first time the other day, and Elliot Gould is indeed excellent in it. Did he play Marlowe in any other films?

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Farewell My Low Pressure Area

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

anyway, uh... i'm not that excited about this? i mean, there have been two good chandler adaptations since the '40s ended, and they were both satirical pastiches (altman's and big lebowski)

owen is good, but if their inspiration is sin city that god help us all

(croupier almost gives me hope)

Flurries My Lovely surely

say it with blood diamonds (a_p), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

i think it will depend on the director, though i think owen is a good pick. he even looks a little like mitchum (whom i enjoyed in 'farewell my lovely', at least).

roger goodell (gear), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

x-post -- Touche.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

Let's hope his exec. producer role gives him the power to do this right.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

lauren bacall should have a role in one of these

roger goodell (gear), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

fuck I just missed a screening of Altman's Long Goodbye at the Castro

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

g00blar beat me to it

How do I not credit for being the first to make fun of that? It wasn't the funniest post ever, but c'mon.

Based on her performance at last years Oscars, I'm not sure Bacall is up for it. I felt terrible for her, like it would've killed them for her to bring out a piece a paper to read from instead of trying to read the teleprompter?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

read too fast to try to get my own zing in sorry dan ;_;

say it with blood diamonds (a_p), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

how is lebowski a Chandler adap?

If they're doing it 'straight,' my main question is... why?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

lebowski isn't much a chandler adapt as it is a nod to the long goodbye i think

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

i read it as a loose big sleep adaptation with lots of long goodbye thrown in

say it with blood diamonds (a_p), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Based on her performance at last years Oscars, I'm not sure Bacall is up for it. I felt terri

The other problem is that Bacall started to suck when Bogart died.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

but morbius' second question is otm.

say it with blood diamonds (a_p), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

homage /= adaptation

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

ok i'd argue the point but that'd be a pointless derail, let's ask who could direct a new chandler adaptation and maybe be halfway decent.

i say neil jordan.

say it with blood diamonds (a_p), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

neil jordan would be a great pick. in an alternate universe someone would give wong kar-wai a crack at it, but that'll never happen obv.

roger goodell (gear), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

The Coen Brothers - see The Man Who Wasn't There. I hope the new movie is a period piece. As much as I like The Long Goodbye, I think there's a lot of elements from the books that get lost in an update.

Jan Svankmajer

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 25 January 2007 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

this is something wong might do well! great idea. he needs a jack warner and a william faulkner and so on.

done right this could be fucking amazing.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Friday, 26 January 2007 10:18 (nineteen years ago)

good choice! clive is K-ROWR!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 26 January 2007 10:25 (nineteen years ago)

I think this is a terrible idea, but apparently I rate Clive Owen a helluva lot lower than most people on ILE.

ledge (ledge), Friday, 26 January 2007 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

they should get THE SIMPSON SISTERS to play the two sisters in 'THE BIG SLEEP'.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Friday, 26 January 2007 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

I hope they start with something other than one of the big ones (although I'm sure that's unlikely). But I, too, am quite happy about this.

i'll mitya halfway (mitya), Friday, 26 January 2007 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

They'll probably get Joel Shumacher or Nancy Myers.

Grey, Ian (IanBrooklyn), Friday, 26 January 2007 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

would still rather get a true Red Harvest movie.

milo z (mlp), Friday, 26 January 2007 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

The other problem is that Bacall started to suck when Bogart died.

Or even before, if Sinatra was in the house.

I've read only The Big Sleep, and I don't care if they can do the explicit stuff now, stay the HELL away from that one.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 26 January 2007 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

I'll pretty much see anything* with Clive Owen in it. I love that guy.

* This does not include King Richard or whatever it was called. Worst film ever.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Friday, 26 January 2007 22:24 (nineteen years ago)
