Suit and tux etiquette

I'm not sure if the boyz of ILX have a general thread for formal attire do's and dont's.

So to get the ball rolling, a couple of questions:

-when do you personally wear tuxedoes? I've heard people finding it inappropriate for very formal occasions (e.g. weddings)

-would you wear a black suit-white shirt set up at an office (it always strike me as reserved for evening occasions or for butlers)

If it's going to be formal I will go for white tie and tails, either with appropriate dress trousers or a hakama.

Otherwise I don't do white shirts. My black suit combo is to wear a black and white floral print shirt with tie of the same print. I am a great fan of the crochet tie.

i love wearing tuxes, and also seeing boys in tuxes, and also taking tuxes off them. can't really imagine wearing one at an event where black tie isn't specified.

i am a total slob when it comes to choosing what to wear to work.

I really like the black (or grey) suit / white shirt / black tie combination. basic and stylish. I could wear only that at work.
as for tux, I only wear it as a fun fashion thing. never at formal/serious occasions.

Hmm, for me the black suit/white shirt/dark tie really seems for evening stuff. The color combination is reminiscent of a tuxedo so I find it weird at work, but maybe that's just me.

I bought my first tux last week from Magee. We don't work in suits except when we have visitors, my current one is brown with a chalk blue stripe over a very pale pink shirt with maroon tie. Sounds ghastly but I think it works.

I bought a new suit that's dark blue with a rich, shiny turquoise stripe running through. Love it but can only wear it with white shirt :(

Sure but that's what I mean. It seems much more suited for cocktails and parties than for work.

Today, I've got a shiny grey Paul Smith suit on and a white shirt with very thin dotted stripes.

well, the thing is they wear the black suits/white shirt/black tie to work in those films.
there's also the reference in the films like "reservoir dogs". not for cocktails only !
