incredible tournament for serena really - she got better and better with each round, i can't think of any other athlete who can play herself into form so quickly. i think the fitness issue was overrated - i heard all the fat jokes and so on, but when i saw serena in the final she looked pretty toned, nowhere near as out of shape as last year.
the key match was the 3rd round against nadia petrova - serena had been sloppy against weak opposition in the first two rounds, petrova had her bang to rights at 6-1 5-3 up (and this was as everyone expected, basically), but her collapse was as much to do with petrova's mental weaknesses as serena's comeback ability. that match gave serena a hell of a lot of confidence.
was quite moving when serena dedicated the win to her sister...

it wasn't a very good match at all though, hardly any rallies. i really want to see the williams v peer quarter-final, 8-6 in the third!

that's their own party line but i don't think i buy it, even now, even after this tournament.
it'll be interesting to see where serena goes from here - she did this at the 2005 AO, and everyone thought that she was "back" then, but she pretty much did nothing for the subsequent two years.

Serena: I definitely think so., Just because I have large bosoms, and I have a big ass (laughter), I swear, my waist is 30 inches - 29 to 30 inches, it's really small! (Steggy notes: That's a modern size 10) I have the smallest waist, but just because I have those two assets, it looks like I'm not fit. Just in the locker room staring at my body, I'm like, "Am I not fit, really not fit? Or is it just that I have all these extra assets?" You know, it just looks like I'm not fit. I don't care if I didn't eat for two years, I still wouldn't be a size 2. No matter how slim I am, I always have this and that. We're living in a [Mary-]Kate Olsen world (gales of laughter now). I'm just not that way, I'm. . . bootylicious, so to say. That's just how it is and always going to be (sheer anarchy, with Serena laughing as hard as anyone).
