I saw this yesterday and thought it was pretty awesome, actually. Lara Flynn Boyle running around in her underwear + Tommy Lee Jones bone-dry while telling Rosario Dawson she's actually a Space Princess or something and shooting lasers at giant slimy sandworm things without even looking. The two-headed Johnny Knoxville I could have done without, but kudos for giving the Frank the talking pug more screen time. Patrick Warburton, David Cross and Jacko also not bad. Rip Torn mostly boring though.

Martin Sheen seems to be wearing some sort of weird dental dam on his mouth? That was weird. Also, what was Tom Hanks' accent supposed to be? Boston? Enjoyable movie, but I was bummed to find out later, on the Internet, that you can't escape from an airplane by crawling out the toilet.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 29 January 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

you guys are just making this up

geoff (gcannon), Monday, 29 January 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

I can attest that Mr. Que is totally not making that up.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

And Hanks really did overdo it with the Baaaaaaastun.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

^^^ NABISCO OTM

i could've done without the costner-drinking-his-own-urine scene

I like how the usually mild-mannered James Berardinelli ends his review for the film:

High-profile killings can provide fertile material for motion pictures, whether they're fact-based accounts or include wild speculation. In this case, however, the fertilizer is spread improperly, resulting in a ponderous motion picture that evidences no growth and smells like shit.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

The Times didn't seem to care for it, tho:

The best part is the closing credits. The nuns bop around singing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and the priests are photographed from above while they lie on the floor doing a Busby Berkeley dance routine. Only then does this sequel hint at the gentle, entertaining satire of the original.

I kept thinking about how it's got to be a pretty bad ensemble script if it lets a really arch Alan Arkin and a kid who has no lines until the third act steal the whole movie.

TOMBO7 (TOMBOT), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

I LOVED it! It was so smart, never condescended to the audience and kept all of its cards close to its chest. And the camerawork was fucking incredible--that one 10-minute shot towards the end, or the long shot in the car when they get attacked. And it was funny, and human, too; it refused to take itself any more seriously than it needed to--Clive Owen in flip-flops was the best part.

he subplot involving the fertilizer-salesman/cabal leader cavorting around with Sirhan Sirhan was a bit far-fetched but i wouldn't say it ruined the movie

but what the fuck with up with THE RABBITS?

say it with blood diamonds (a_p), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Clive kind of outclassed Matt Damon at the end there. I don't know if I buy Good Will Hunting as a product of some kind of MK Ultra/Manchurian Candidate, but I suppose that might be part of the point.

re: rabbits

i think they're kind of a statement about globalization

latebloomer: crapness 2 the Nth degree (latebloomer), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

i just remembered: the ben stiller cameo was my favorite thing he's done in ages!

say it with blood diamonds (a_p), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I think the rabbits were a tribute to this.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

what was in the briefcase? all we ever find out is that it casts off some weird light. was that a nod to 'kiss me deadly'?

plus if it wasn't for the rabbits we wouldn't have the scene involving Michael Caine mercy killing/sacrifice, which was a touching foreshadowing of RFK's own demise

latebloomer: crapness 2 the Nth degree (latebloomer), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

one thing i can we can all agree on:

Helen Mirren was FABULOUS in this film

latebloomer: crapness 2 the Nth degree (latebloomer), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

latebloomer: crapness 2 the Nth degree (latebloomer), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

that it was her, i mean. why she got all that buzz over the Queen and not this eludes me

latebloomer: crapness 2 the Nth degree (latebloomer), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

oh fuck i think i have her confused with emolio estevez. my bad.

latebloomer: crapness 2 the Nth degree (latebloomer), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

When that old Denny Vertigo track came up on the soundtrack... man.

Thumpy Screamy (kenan), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

Andy Richter was especially great in this movie, (which does not hold up well on a third screening, FYI). I also dug Russ Tamblin as Chocki!

"The Meadow is Scorched"?

that was actually a (rather shitty IMO) cover by some singer-songwriter dude, not the original
